Combining Geographic Information Systems for Transportation and Mixed Integer Linear Programming in Facility Location-Allocation Problems  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, we aimed to assess the solution quality for location-allocation problems from facilities generated by the software TransCAD® , a Geographic Information System for Transportation (GIS-T). Such facilities were obtained after using two routines together: Facility Location and Transportation Problem, when compared with optimal solutions from exact mathematical models, based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), developed externally for the GIS. The models were applied to three simulations: the first one proposes opening factories and customer allocation in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil; the second involves a wholesaler and a study of location and allocation of distribution centres for retail customers; and the third one involves the location of day-care centers and allocation of demand (0 - 3 years old children). The results showed that when considering facility capacity, the MILP optimising model presents results up to 37% better than the GIS and proposes different locations to open new facilities.

Abstract: the objective of this work is to analyze the physical distribution in a company of the wholesale market, with special attention on its vehicle routing and scheduling process. in this manner, a case study in a wholesale, placed in the south of minas gerais state, was carried out. this study related the practical aspects of the operational routines established in literature specialized technique. as general conclusion, it can be affirmed that the company despite using diverse concepts and tools to support its physical distribution processes is still hostage of the lack of information in technical simple operational processes, as the accurate road distances between the customers. consequently, it is observed that the process is rather rationalized other than optimized and, in diverse stages, excessively dependent of practical experience of the involved personnel.

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to use the Geographic Information System (GIS) as a routing tool for urban solid waste (USW) systems. The data from the vehicle used in the USW collection system was put in the GIS database, obtained directly from the company responsible for the service in Itajubá city (MG). With this data, scenarios of the routing system were simulated in GIS, using the GIS ArcRouting algorithm. The goal of the simulations was to evaluate the quality of the current route system and sought solutions that minimize the distance covered by the vehicles and, consequently, the reduction of the involved costs. The general results showed the GIS ArcRouting algorithm to be adequate and as obtaining good results, since that the most important problem’s variables (tax of waste generation and vehicle speed) are attained with precision.

Abstract: The goal of this paper was to study, by means of a case study, the viability of multimodal transport when compared to the traditional road transport mode in Brazil. The study was conducted in a multinational enterprise of the aluminum-rolling sector, where general cost aspects of road transport, considering trucks with different capacities, and two multimodal transport configurations were compared: cabotage and road transport; and road and rail transport. The results have shown that, for this case, the road transport costs are still smaller when compared to the multimodal options. Although this may sound a counter sense to what is known today on multimodality, it can be explained by some factors, such as higher costs associated with stocks and insurance. Another observed factor in the study was the operational difficulties of multimodal transportation, which corroborates what is found in the literature on the subject.

Abstract: the objective of this work is to evaluate the use of a global accessibility index as a reference value for improving the spatial distribution of the students served by a public network of educational facilities at the municipal level. given the spatial location of day-care centers and schools and their registered users during the year 2000 in the city of s?o carlos, sp, an evaluation of their distribution in the actual and projected scenarios was carried out. the goal was to minimize displacement costs. the results have shown the viability of the proposed index for establishing service (coverage) areas, taking into account a certain hypothetical densification for the entire city. with the conditions set in the proposed scenarios, which were assumed to have quite acceptable urban density values and a minimum relocation level of the students, more than 95% of the children were within the coverage areas.

Abstract: Brazil, as other emerging countries, faces the lack of spatial data available to the development of the geotechnology in transport applications. As an alternative, collaborative mapping is introduced. Collaborative mapping is a concept that uses a very defined methodology, which allows volunteers to share the hard work of mapping Brazilian roads networks. This paper aims to illustrate how the collaborative mapping can be useful to achieve digital maps to applications in transport. All the steps to construct the municipal map of Itajubá-MG were detailed, in terms of the Tracksource Project, the bigger known initiative of collaborative mapping in Brazil. The results has proved, that the collaborative mapping is a solid option to gathering of digital maps to transport applications, specially in a country like Brazil, with continental dimensions and lag in public availability of this type of information.

Abstract: O objetivo desta pesquisa foi qualificar e quantificar as popula es de Bostrichidae, Platypodidae e Scolytidae que ocorrem associadas a um fragmento de cerrado nos períodos de seca (maio a outubro) e de chuva (novembro a abril), no município de Cuiabá, estado de Mato Grosso. As coletas foram quinzenais e ocorreram de abril de 2008 a mar o de 2009. Foram utilizadas seis armadilhas etanólicas, iscadas com álcool etílico combustível hidratado. Os exemplares coletados foram triados, contados e identificados nos Laboratórios de Prote o Florestal da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso e da Universidade Federal do Paraná. Foram realizados estudos faunísticos de dominancia, constancia, freqüência, abundancia e de diversidade. Também foi desenvolvido estudo de flutua o populacional, de correla o com a tempertura, umidade relativa, precipita o pluvial e testes de médias entre as espécies. Foram identificadas 25 espécies, sendo cinco de Bostrichidae, duas de Platypodidae e 18 de Scolytidae. Foi coletado um total de 874 indivíduos, dos quais 588 foram coletados no período de seca e 286 no período de chuva. Bostrichopsis uncinata, Cryptocarenus diadematus, Xyleborus affinis e Xyleborus retusus foram as espécies mais numerosas no período de seca, enquanto Bostrichopsis uncinata, Xyleborus affinis e Xyleborus ferrugineus foram mais representativas no período de chuvas. As espécies Cryptocarenus diadematus, Xyleborus affinis e Xyleborus retusus ocorreram como dominante, muito abundante, muito frequente e constante somente no período seco, enquanto que no período de chuvas Xyleborus affinis ocorreu como super dominante, super abundante, super frequente e constante. No período de seca, os índices de Equitatibilidade e de Shannon-Wiener foram mais expressivos quando comparados com os obtidos nos meses de chuva.The purpose of this research was to qualify and quantify the populations of Bostrichidae, Platypodidae and Scolytidae that occur associated with a piece of Brazilian savanna during the dry season (May to October) and the wet season (November to April) in Cuiabá city, Mato Grosso. The collections occurred every 15 days from April 2008 to March 2009. Six ethanolic traps were used, and baited with hydrated ethanol fuel. The collected samples were sorted, counted and identified at the Forest Protection Laboratory of the Federal University of Mato Grosso and the Federal University of Paraná. Abstract: Forest industries look for multiple utilizations for their timber production. In Brazil, the genus Eucalyptus has a great potential for solid wood products; however, only a small amount of Eucalyptus is used as sawn timber. About 50% of the log volume ends up as waste during mechanical processing, resulting in serious economic and environmental problems. In most cases, such residue is discarded at random or used as fuel, and in this context the sustainable management of processing industrial waste is an urgent necessity. Parallel to this, Eucalyptus has not been employed for small wooden object (SWO) production. Hence, the aim of this work was to evaluate the performance of small wooden objects produced with Eucalyptus urophylla, E. camaldulensis, and E. grandis waste from sawmilling. Brazilian craftsmen manufactured SWOs with Eucalyptus, and these crafted objects were presented at exhibits and trade fairs for assessment. The proposed small wooden objects made with Eucalyptus residues exhibited satisfactory performance and achieved excellent acceptance by the visitors. This work gave evidence that the use of sawmill waste as raw material for small wooden object manufacture has potential to generate income for economically underprivileged communities near to a plantation.

Abstract: physiological and healthy quality of cotton seeds (gossypium hirsutum l.) are decisive factor to establish an ideal stand in the field. the chemical seed treatment is necessary to preserve the healthy quality and to obtain a better development performance of the seeds in the field. actually, researches on chemical treatment are liberally conducted, which film-coating technique has been used to get better adherence of these chemical products on the seeds. in this study, the physiological and healthy quality of two seed lots of delta opal and two seeds lots of sure grow, chemically treated and covered with 2 types of commercial films, ag201 and tgbp1080, were evaluated. the cotton seeds were treated with a mixture of the fungicides carboxin+thiram and the insecticide imidacloprid, in dosages of 2,5ml/kg+2,5ml/kg and 5ml/kg+5ml/kg. in both treatments, with 2ml/kg of the films were added. the treatments were evaluated by germination test, emergence test, speed of emergence, cold test and seed healthy test. the treatment of 5ml/kg of the fungicides (carboxin + thiran and insecticide (imidaclopride) was efficient in controlling fungus on the seeds. the film-coating does not allow to reduce the dosage in chemical treatment of seeds and also does not affect the germination, the emergence and the speed of emergence in high quality seeds.
