Abstract: objectives: to establish rotavirus incidence in diarrheic diseases in children from 0 to five years of age, with moderate and severe malnutrition hospitalized at instituto materno infantil prof. fernando figueira (imip). methods: a descriptive case study series was performed from august 2004 to june 2005. fifty children comprised the study. a pre-codified questionnaire was used to build a data base on the epi-info version 6.0 software. stool samples were analyzed and the positive ones were selected by electronic microscopy for rotavirus and then tested by enzymatic immunoassay. results: the incidence of rotavirus in the studied group was of 24.0%. the families were of low income, 96% had per capita income below r$150.00. near two thirds of the children (60.4%) were breast feed for less than three months and 10% of them had never been vaccinated. conclusions: the study contributes to the etiology of diarrheic disease in malnourished children, nevertheless larger series are required to validate the results.

Abstract: this paper presents the methodology and results of the implementation of a surveillance system for non-communicable disease risk factors in adolescents. a random sample of 8th-grade students (n = 1,684) enrolled in municipal schools in rio de janeiro, brazil, was studied. students were asked to complete a confidential questionnaire on food consumption, physical activity, sedentary leisure-time activities, and tobacco consumption. prevalence estimates of risk factors were calculated for the entire sample and by gender. non-response rates ranged from 1.1 to 8.9%. the findings included low consumption of fruits (45.8%) and vegetables (20.0% and 16.5% for salads and cooked vegetables, respectively), regular consumption of soft drinks (36.7%) and candies (46.7%), extensive time on tv, computer, and videogames (71.7% spend at least 4h/day at these activities), low frequency of regular physical activity (40%), and 6.4% prevalence of smoking. girls showed less physical activity and more smoking. the system appeared to be feasible and indicated high prevalence of risk factors for non-communicable diseases.

Abstract: background: achievement of an ideal arterial substitute to be used in the reconstruction of small- and medium-caliber arteries is still the main objective of most scientific research studies developed in the area of vascular substitutes. sugarcane biopolymer membrane could be extremely useful to perform vascular reconstruction in arteries with diameter smaller than 4 mm, allowing treatment of diseases that affect millions of people in brazil and worldwide. objective: to evaluate the hemodynamic and histopathologic behavior of sugarcane biopolymer membrane when used as a patch in femoral artery angioplasty in dogs. method: eight adult mongrel dogs, under general anesthesia, underwent percutaneous doppler velocimetry of the left and right femoral arteries for preoperative control at the health sciences center experimental research laboratory of universidade federal de pernambuco. after being disinfected, the dogs underwent femoral artery patch angioplasty using a sugarcane membrane biopolymer patch on the left side and an expanded ptfe (e-ptfe) patch on the right side. the dogs underwent daily clinical evaluation for the first week and weekly thereafter. clinical evaluation consisted of an examination of femoral artery pulses, gait assessment and verification as to whether there was any pulsatile tumor, bruising, hemorrhage or surgical wound infection. one hundred and eighty days after the angioplasties, percutaneous doppler velocimetry of the femoral arteries was performed under general anesthesia. next, the dogs underwent dissection of the femoral arteries, measurement of the arterial diameter and perioperative doppler velocimetry proximally and distally to the artery angioplasty. laparotomy was then performed to expose the abdominal aorta for angiographic access. the femoral artery segments with patches were harvested for histopathologic analysis, and the animals were sacrificed under a toxic dosage of anesthetic. results: at 180 days, no cases of surgical wound in

Abstract: with the objective of testing the influence of photoperiod on development of lambs, twenty-six crossbred ile de france x corriedale male lambs were studied slaughtered with 38 to 40kg the lambs were slaughtered with 38 to 40kg. animals were ramdomly divided in two groups: long photoperiod (18h light/ 6h darkness) and control (12h light/ 12h darkness). food consumption was daily evaluated. weekly, lambs were weighted and blood samples collected for triiodotironine (t3), thyroxine (t4) and cortisol plasmatic levels determination. jejunal and ileal samples were collected for morphometric analyses of the intestinal epithelium. carcass characteristics were also studied. lambs submitted to the long photoperiod have greater food consumption and live weight gain when compared to control (p<0.05). no significant differences were observed on the plasmatic levels of the hormones, in the morphology of the intestinal epithelium or carcass characteristics. in conclusion, long photoperiod has a positive effect on the development of lambs, being an economically viable techinic.

Abstract: this theoretical essay aims to present an introductory analysis of ethnomethodology, an empirical social research approach that arose in the 1960s and has had an impact on sociology ever since, as it underlines that ethnomethodologists study social phenomena, those which are available in the incorporated sensitive human activities of speech and action. for this purpose, some issues are presented and discussed, such as the historical context of its emergence, highlighting its origins, main concepts, constitutive philosophical elements, methods and types of research that this approach encompasses and has developed over the past decades, in addition to criticisms and converging points with other social research approaches. the main intention here is to suggest a dialogue between ethnomethodology and organizational studies that deal with social practices, discussing how, from its multiparadigmatic and multifaceted nature, ethnomethodology can be a valid research approach for the qualitative study of organizations. in conclusion, ethnomethodology seems to be a possibility for approaching the organizational phenomenon that allows it to be adequately understood based on the notion of social practices.

Agentes antineoplásicos biorredutíveis: uma nova alternativa para o tratamento de tumores sólidos

Abstract: a problem often encountered in cancer therapy is the presence of tumor cell subpopulation that are resistant to treatment. solid tumors frequently contain hypoxic cells that are resistant to killing by ionizing radiation and also by many chemotherapeutic agents. however, these hypoxic cells can be exploited for therapy by non-toxic hypoxic-activated prodrugs. bioreductive drugs require metabolic reduction to generate cytotoxic metabolites. this process is facilitated by appropriate reductases and the lower oxygen conditions present in solid tumors. the unique presence of hypoxic cells in human tumors provides an important target for selective cancer therapy.
