Feed efficiency of Nellore cattle selected for postweaning weight
Castilhos, André Michel de;Branco, Renata Helena;Corvino, Tatiana Lucila Sobrinho;Razook, Alexander George;Bonilha, Sarah Figueiredo Martins;Figueiredo, Leopoldo Andrade de;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982010001100023
Abstract: two nellore herds were compared, one selected for greater postweaning weight and the other, control, selected for average postweaning weight, to evaluate the effects of 29 years of selection on feed efficiency. sixty nellore males (41 selected and 19 control) averaging 205 kg and 267 days of age were evaluated in individual pens during performance test. performance and dry matter intake were used to determine the following feed efficiency traits: feed conversion; residual feed intake; residual gain; partial growth efficiency; relative growth rate and kleiber ratio. after the 112-day experimental period, control animals showed lower body weight when compared to selected animals, however, they did not differ for dry matter intake (% of body weight), rib-eye area and fat thickness at the 12th rib subcutaneous region and on the rump region. dry matter intake (kg/day) and average daily weight gain from selected animals were, respectively, 19.4% and 26.4% higher than the control ones. the highest average daily weight gain by selected animals promoted significant improvement, around 6%, on feed conversion; 70 g/day on residual gain; and 17% on kleiber rate. the other feed efficiency traits (residual feed intake, partial growth efficiency and relative growth rate) did not differ between herds. the 29-year selection for post-weaning weight did not affect feed efficiency of nellore cattle.

Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832008000200006
Abstract: psychological stress among the families of users of a psychosocial care center in the interior of the state of s?o paulo was investigated. nine family members identified as caregivers of these users participated: they were mostly female, aged 60-76 years and from lower social classes. a semi-structured guide was used for the interviews, covering the caregiver's freely reported life history, the meaning attributed to caring and the impact of mental illness on the interviewees' and relatives' lives. thematic analysis on the interviews enabled identification of psychological stress (nervousness and depression) among these relatives, including caregivers, and administration of psychiatric treatment using anxyolitic drugs. the presence of mental stress not only in the user but also among family members may imply greater burden on the caregiver, because of the accumulation of tasks, and may indicate the need for attention and intervention among families by healthcare teams.
O papel da mídia na preven??o do HIV/Aids e a representa??o da mulher no contexto da epidemia
Gon?alves,Erli Helena; Varandas,Renata;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232005000100029
Abstract: the present article tries to question the mission of the media before the epidemic of hiv/aids. the whole discussion is supposed, in the light of the bioethics, to try to apprehend the tenor of the messages transmitted in the context of the disease. to discuss if the media had considered the different ways of the epidemic while they were being modified; to think if the hiv/aids educative campaigns had considered the gender differences, the sexuality and the socialization process.

Abstract: aim: to evaluate the agreement between the subjective facial analysis, proposed by capelozza filho, and the soft tissue cephalometric analysis, proposed by arnett and mclaughlin. methods: fifty standardized frontal and lateral photographs and fifty cephalometric x-rays were used, in a sample with a mean age of 24 years and 1 month. after that it was verified, on the pattern i patients, the correspondence of the values found on this sample with the ones proposed by the soft tissue cephalometric analysis normative values. results: it was demonstrated that the lips are always positioned ahead the true vertical line, and that, despite the variation of the pogonion point, the facial equilibrium is still maintained. conclusion: the results related to the subjective facial analysis showed that this is a valid and efficient method of facial pattern classification.

Abstract: The cultivation of seedlings in hydroponics, the ban of methyl bromide and the discovery of highly systemic insecticides from the neonicotinoid group have opened up new possibilities in tobacco protection against pests. It was supposed that tobacco seedlings drenched in the solution of tiamethoxam would result in efficient protection of transplanted plants against wireworms. The efficacy of tiamethoxam applied as drench or irrigation of seedlings or transplanted plants was compared with the efficacy obtained by standard granular insecticide (tefluthrin) in the two-year research in the condition of high infestation by Agriotes ustulatus Schall. larvae. The results show that drench of seedlings is easy and very practical method having satisfactory efficacy against wireworms. Even though statistical analysis doesn’t support this, it was obvious that a certain favorable impact of tiametoxam on the vigour of the plant (exuberant and faster growth and healthier appearance in general) exists.
Mulheres, loucura e cuidado: a condi??o da mulher na provis?o e demanda por cuidados em saúde mental
Pegoraro, Renata Fabiana;Caldana, Regina Helena Lima;
Saúde e Sociedade , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-12902008000200009
Abstract: the current brazilian public policies in mental health are stimulating the creation of out-of-hospital services. as a result, the role of the family, especially of the woman, in the informal care provided for a mental illness patient is increasing in importance. although the woman is considered fundamental in providing care for the family, she may also get ill and demand care from mental health teams. in this case, the woman is both providing and demanding care. this paper presents a literature review on the condition of the woman that both receives and provides care in mental health. this review starts with studies that discuss the relationship between woman and madness, from classical age's records to studies conducted in brazil in the beginning of the 20th century. the paper then focuses on literature that discusses the woman's role as the main informal caretaker at home, using studies that adopt, as discussion reference, the impact of this role on family life. finally, it comments on literature that approaches the special needs of the woman who demands care in mental health, especially women who have small children. recognition of the specificities of the woman's condition may aid the development of new forms of care which involve the whole family in a mental health intervention. women with small children and suffering from severe mental illness demand professional support, especially if they need hospitalization or continuous treatment.
Dark Matter Prediction from Canonical Quantum Gravity with Frame Fixing
Giovanni Corvino,Giovanni Montani
Physics , 2004, DOI: 10.1142/S0217732304015920
Abstract: We show how, in canonical quantum cosmology, the frame fixing induces a new energy density contribution having features compatible with the (actual) cold dark matter component of the Universe. First we quantize the closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model in a sinchronous reference and determine the spectrum of the super-Hamiltonian in the presence of ultra-relativistic matter and a perfect gas contribution. Then we include in this model small inhomogeneous (spherical) perturbations in the spirit of the Lemaitre-Tolman cosmology. The main issue of our analysis consists in outlining that, in the classical limit, the non-zero eigenvalue of the super-Hamiltonian can make account for the present value of the dark matter critical parameter. Furthermore we obtain a direct correlation between the inhomogeneities in our dark matter candidate and those one appearing in the ultra-relativistic matter.
Hamiltonian Stationary Lagrangian Tori in Kaehler Manifolds
Adrian Butscher,Justin Corvino
Mathematics , 2008,
Abstract: A Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifold of a Kaehler manifold is a Lagrangian submanifold whose volume is stationary under Hamiltonian variations. We find a sufficient condition on the curvature of a Kaehler manifold of real dimension four that guarantees the existence of a family of small Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian tori.
Scalar Curvature and the Einstein Constraint Equations
Justin Corvino,Daniel Pollack
Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: We survey some results on scalar curvature and properties of solutions to the Einstein constraint equations. Topics include an extended discussion of asymptotically flat solutions to the constraint equations, including recent results on the geometry of the center of mass of such solutions. We also review methods to construct solutions to the constraint equations, including the conformal method, as well as gluing techniques for which it is important to understand both conformal and non-conformal deformations of the scalar curvature.

Abstract: the present study has as objective to identify the burden, experienced by the family member in charge of taking care of his relative, who is a user of a small town ?psychosocial care center?, located in the state of s?o paulo, brazil. a semi-structured questionnaire was used, in order to obtain a characterization of the family members, based on both, their life story and other topics related to the patient?s psychological illness. the interviews were carried out with 9 family members, from 28 to 80 years old, being most of them the patients? mothers. the data were analyzed by using a qualitative analysis, thus forming theme categories that indicated the presence of an emotional, practical and financial overload to the family member in charge of the patient?s daily care. the study emphasizes the need for a support group, mainly during crisis. it also points out the advanced age of the caretakers, as an aspect to be considered by the teams that work in the mental health field, in the view of the brazilian public policy, which open the possibility of looking after the patient with mental disorders within his social and familiar context.
