Agulhon, Renata Alves;Jobim, Clóves Cabreira;Branco, Ant?nio Ferriani;Calixto Júnior, Moysés;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982005000100019
Abstract: fourty beef cows (330 kg) were allotted to a completely randomized design, in a 2x2 factorial scheme (two supplementation levesl [0.5 and 1.0% lw] and two energy sources [whole oat grain and ground corn grain]) to evaluate perfomance of animal grazing marandugrass (brachiaria brizantha hochst ex. a. rich stapf), during the dry season. supplements were formulated to contain 15% of crude protein (cp). average daily gain showed no difference among treatments (0.58 and 0.69 kg/d for oat, and 0.54 and 0.66 kg/d for corn, at levels of 0.5 and 1.0% lw, respectively). no difference was detected for carcass dressing among treatments, with average value of 46.12%. forage mass available was high, but quality was low, mainly as result of frost occurred in the period. average values for cp, neutral detergent fiber (ndf) and acid detergent fiber (adf) were 5.34, 74.95 and 47.66%, respectively. oat grain showed similar quality as corn for beef cow supplementation. considering high forage mass in the pasture, 0.5% lw supplementation showed higher economical efficiency.

Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982002000700004
Abstract: the experiment was conducted to evaluate the average daily liveweight gain (adlg), number of animal.days/ha (ad/ha) and liveweight gain/ha (lg/ha), in a tanzaniagrass pasture deferred in different sward heights in the autumn and after managed in different sward height conditions, during the winter period. a completely randomized design was used. the treatments were four levels of sward height: t1=20, t2=40, t3=60 and t4=80 cm. however, the average sward height levels maintained in a pasture was used for the statistical analysis, and these were: t20r1 = 26.3, t20r2 = 24.6, t40r1 = 47.9, t40r2 = 42.5, t60r1 = 55.8, t60r2 = 61.7, t80r1 = 69.2 and t80r2 = 71.4 cm. the different sward heights were maintained under continuous stocking method and variable stocking rate. the adlg decreased as the sward height levels increased. there was no effect of sward height with lg/ha and number of animal.days/ha. the results showed that tanzaniagrass pastures in the northwest region of paraná, deferred after reproductive phase, could be used in 40 to 60 cm of sward height.
Health promotion and dental caries
Maltz, Marisa;Jardim, Juliana Jobim;Alves, Luana Severo;
Brazilian Oral Research , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-83242010000500004
Abstract: the central idea of the brazilian health system is to prevent the establishment of disease or detect it as early as possible. prevention and treatment of dental caries are related to behavioral factors, including dietary and oral hygiene habits, which are related to many chronic diseases. dental health promotion therefore should be fully integrated into broadly based health-promoting strategies and actions such as food and health policies, and general hygiene (including oral hygiene), among others. for decades, a linear relationship between sugar consumption and caries has been observed. recent data has indicated that this relationship is not as strong as it used to be before the widespread use of fluoride. however, diet is still a key factor acting in the carious process. oral hygiene is a major aspect when it comes to caries, since dental biofilm is its etiological factor. oral hygiene procedures are effective in controlling dental caries, especially if plaque removal is performed adequately and associated with fluoride. an alternative to a more efficient biofilm control in occlusal areas is the use of dental sealants, which are only indicated for caries-active individuals. if a cavity is formed as a consequence of the metabolic activity of the biofilm, a restorative material or a sealant can be placed to block access of the biofilm to the oral environment in order to prevent caries progress. the prevention of dental caries based on common risk-factor strategies (diet and hygiene) should be supplemented by more disease-specific policies such as rational use of fluoride, and evidence-based dental health care.
The history and global market of oral home-care products
Jardim, Juliana Jobim;Alves, Luana Severo;Maltz, Marisa;
Brazilian Oral Research , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-83242009000500004
Abstract: this literature review reports the history and the current market of oral home-care products. it provides information extending from the products used by our ancestors to those currently available, as well as on the changes in the supply and consumption of these products. although the scientific knowledge about oral diseases has improved greatly in recent years, our ancestors had already been concerned with cleaning their teeth. a variety of rudimentary products and devices were used since before recorded history, like chewing sticks, tree twigs, bird feathers, animal bones, tooth powder and home-made mouth rinses. today, due to technological improvements of the cosmetic industry and market competition, home-use oral care products available in the marketplace offer a great variety of options. an increase in the consumption of oral care products has been observed in the last decades. estimates show that latin america observed a 12% increase in hygiene and beauty products sales between 2002 and 2003, whereas the observed global rate was approximately 2%. a significant increase in the per capita consumption of toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthrinse and dental floss has been estimated from 1992 to 2002, respectively at rates of 38.3%, 138.3%, 618.8% and 177.2%. pertaining to this increased supply and consumption of oral care products, some related questions remain unanswered, like the occurrence of changes in disease behavior due to the use of new compounds, their actual efficacy and correct indications, and the extent of the benefits to oral health derived from consuming more products.

Alves, Crésio;Arruti, Renata;
Acta Ortopédica Brasileira , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-78522009000100011
Abstract: objective: to report a case series of benign transient hyperphosphatasemia of infancy (bthi). description (case report): a series of four girls with bthi is described. the age range was 11-45 months (median: 13 months). at diagnosis, the serum alkaline phosphatase was 1.1- 6.1 times (median: 1.36) above the reference values. return to normal values occurred between 7-11 months (median: 9 months). there was no evidence of bone, liver, or endocrine disease, and none of the patients were using medications that could lead to serum alkaline phosphatase level rise. one of the patients presented with upper airway infection before the hyperphosphatasemia was diagnosed. aspartate-aminotransferase, alanine-aminotransferase, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium levels were normal in all children. parathyroid hormone was normal in the three patients tested. in two patients, the investigation for hepatitis a, b and c was negative. alkaline phosphatase was normal in three of four parent couples tested. comments: bthi is a self-limited and benign disease with spontaneous resolution affecting children younger than five years old, without clinical or laboratorial evidence of osseous, hepatic and endocrine disorders. the etiology remains unclear. bthi potential should be considered in the diagnostic evaluation of hyperphosphatasemia in order to avoid unnecessary tests.

Abstract: this paper aims to analyze the research with children and to elaborate a critical approach about subjectivity production between adults and children on contemporaneity. mikhail bakhtin's theory of language was used as the theoretical basis to discuss the complex subject of dialogism and otherness in the relationship between researcher and child during the field work. our proposal was to enlarge the discussion about this relationship, taking into account the consumer culture and the informational society, as a way of trying to overcome the educational challenges nowadays.
