Journal of Applied Oral Science , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-77572006000100008
Abstract: objectives: the aims of the present study were to evaluate the fluoride (f) concentrations in whole, defatted and chocolate milks commercially available in brazil and to estimate the daily f intake from these sources. material and methods: f concentrations were determined for 23 brands of milks, after hmds-facilitated diffusion, using a f ion-specific electrode. possible f ingestion per kg body weight was estimated, based on suggested volumes of formula consumption, for infants aging 1 to 12 months. results: f concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 1.6 μg/ml f for all brands analyzed. whole and defatted milks had the lowest f concentrations, ranging from 0.02 to 0.07 μg/ml. with respect to chocolate milks, three brands had f concentrations above 0.5 μg/ml. some brands of chocolate milks exceeded the dose regarded as the threshold level for the development of dental fluorosis, without taking into account other sources of fluoride intake. conclusion: the high fluoride concentrations found in some brands of chocolate milks in the present study indicate that many products may be important contributors to the total fluoride intake, reinforcing the need of assaying fluoride content of foods and beverages consumed by small children.
Tolerance to water deficit in young trees of jackfruit and sugar apple
Rodrigues, Bruno Monteiro;Souza, Bruna Dias;Nogueira, Rejane Mansur;Santos, Mauro Guida;
Revista Ciência Agron?mica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-66902010000200011
Abstract: the predawn leaf water potential (ψl), stomatal conductance (gs), co2 assimilation (a), transpiration (e), chlorophyll a fluorescence and leaf metabolite contents (soluble sugars, proteins and free amino acids) of two tropical fruit species grown in a greenhouse were evaluated to determine the effect of induced water stress on young plants. six month-old jackfruit (artocarpus heterophyllus lam.) and sugar apple (annona squamosa l.) plants were evaluated in 10.0 l pots after eight days of water withholding, imposed by suspension of irrigation. jackfruit water status was better than sugar apple. sugar apple plants showed different daily stomatal behavior when well hydrated, compared to jackfruit plants under the same conditions. the gas exchange of both species showed sensibility to high vapor pressure deficit (vpd). however, under water deficit, photochemical efficiency dropped at midday in both treatments (control and water deficit) and both species showed low tolerance to high vpd and light intensity under greenhouse conditions. in contrast, some chlorophyll fluorescence variables showed good photosystem ii stability at highest vpd hour (14:00 h). the present results involving carbohydrate metabolic changes revealed an accumulation of soluble sugars; moreover, protein and free amino acid contents in water stressed leaves also increased. these findings suggest an absence of damage to photosynthetic machinery for water deficit period. jackfruit revealed greater tolerance to water deficit than sugar apple an important feature for commercial crops in northeastern brazil.

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2008,
Abstract: In view of growing rates, the suicidal behavior represents a complex problem worldwide. Health Community Agents (HCAs) are important components of the Family Health Strategy because they establish relations of exchange between the scientific and the popular knowledge. These workers can identify and prevent the suicidal behavior. The objective of this study is analyzing the HCAs′ conceptions about the attendance rendered to users with suicidal behavior in the health care basic units. It is a qualitative research and the data collection was performed by means of interviews. For the treatment of data, the technique of analysis of thematic content was utilized. Results indicate that HCAs are workers that identify mainly the suicidal behavior. The actions that are mostly performed by the HCAs with users with suicidal behavior are: communication of the fact to the staff, listening, welcoming, monitoring of medication use and home visits. The HCAs refer fear of approaching users with suicidal behavior because they are not qualified in the field of mental health. Evidences show the importance of bonds and the participation of the family in these situations. The results may serve as basis for proposals of actions aiming at the integrality of the care in the attendance to users with suicidal behavior.

Abstract: in brazil, rabies is an endemic disease with a fatality rate of 100%. the number of cases has decreased, but the number of cases for treatment after exposure and treatment dropout is still high. this study investigated the causes of anti-rabies treatment abandon, after exposure, in porto alegre (rs, brazil), from july to december 2006. a case series was designed. two hundred and eighty abandon cases were selected through randomized systematic sampling, out of 962 registered in sinan. data was collected in people's homes through interviews, by means of a questionnaire. according to the interviewees, 66.4% concluded the prescribed number of vaccines. this information was not registered in sinan. among the subjects confirmed of abandoning the treatment (94/280), 24.5% reported that they thought it was not necessary to complete the treatment, while 13.8% felt that they did not receive clear guidelines about what to do. health services attempted to contact absents in only 19.2% of the cases. data entered in sinan present failures. these occurred because patients started treatment at one health service and continued in a different one. as a consequence, information about the conclusion of the treatment was not entered into the system.
