Abstract: research of images and meanings about the experiences of patients during the service/treatment in a nursery; aiming to problematize ethic matters in the routine of health practices to stimulate reflections about the professional training and situations considered "natural" attributable to routine urgencies. it was given cameras to 5 bedridden patients in an orthopedics nursery of a university hospital on the second semester of the year 2001, so they could register by photos their experiences as patients, looking for answers to the following questions: what is the meaning of being in bed and unable to get up of it? what is good and bad about your routine in the nursery? trying to understand this material through the patients' point of view, find herewith part of this experience registered and related. the results showed that amongst the biggest difficulties faced by them were dependence, bringing about embarrassment and discomfort; and lack of information, producing insecurity and enlarging dependence.

Fontana-Rosa, Júlio César;Oliveira, Reinaldo Ayer de;
Revista da Associa??o Médica Brasileira , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-42302008000300024
Abstract: the authors discuss the legal and ethical meaning of the expression "third-party consent" by questioning its limits. it is indeed shown that it does not satisfactorily meet what is called third-party consent because this would require legal endorsement by legal codes and norms which, in fact does not occur. as such, the expression "third-party consent", whenever used, may not provide the professional with the normative, ethical and legal support needed for professional performance.

Abstract: the use of animals in scientific experiments has beendescribed since the fifth century bc. a number of scientific advances in health are attributed to animal models. the issue of the moral status of animals has always been debated. objectives: this article aims to review and to present a historical summary of the current laws, to guide researchers who wish to use animal models in otolaryngology research. material and methods: research on the medline database. results: for many years there were no laws ruling the use of animals in scientific experimentation in brazil. standards set by national and international organizations were followed. recently, law no. 11.794/08 established procedures for the scientific use of animals. studies in otolaryngology have used the larynxes of rabbits, pigs, dogs, guinea pigs (cavia porcellus), and mice. there were also studies comparing rabbits, rats, and dogs, rhinoplasty on rabbits, and inner ear studies on rats and guinea pigs (albino). conclusions: the researchers involved in scientific work with animals should know the principles of law 11.794/08 and investigate what animals are appropriate for each area of study in their models. otolaryngologists, especially those dedicated to research, need to be mindful of the ethical rules regarding the use of animals in their studies.

Silva, Raida de Jesus;Morabito, Reinaldo;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X2004000100012
Abstract: this study presents an approach to optimize the scheduling of furnace loadings in small size foundries. the approach consists of determining a furnace scheduling to produce all ordered items in such a way as to maximize productivity (or profit contribution) and satisfy due dates and process restraints. it is based on the theory of cutting and packing problems; it combines a greedy constructive heuristic and the classical knapsack problem. to validate the approach, a case study was developed in a inox-steel foundry located in s?o carlos, sp. the results obtained simulating two weeks of the company production showed that the procedure is able to generate better solutions than the ones used by the company.
