Abstract: investigation of 1,107 cases of exanthematous diseases in manaus allowed the identification of the first 47 cases of human parvovirus b19 in the city. parvovirus b19 was characterized by a combination of signs and symptoms such as fever, chronic headache, arthralgia, myalgia and exanthema. the frequency of exanthema was higher in individuals less than fifteen years old. in adults, fever and arthropathy were the most frequent symptoms. the highest number of cases was registered in 1999. regarding gender, male sex was predominant among infected individuals younger than fifteen years old, and female sex in adults. this study, therefore, underscores the necessity for clarifying the causes of exanthematous illnesses that occur in the state of amazonas and investigation of the viral activity.

Abstract: The present case report refers to a patient from the State of Rond nia, North region of Brazil, attended with clinical suspicion of hepatic echinococcosis. Examination by imaging (ultrasonography and computerized tomography) revealed a conglomerate of cystic lesions, with mobile contents within the cyst. The serology (immunoblot) for Echinococcus sp. was positive (21 and 31 kDa bands). This case is the first reported in Rond nia, suggesting the need to investigate the polycystic echinococcosis in individuals with hepatic cysts from areas of tropical forest and hunting habits where wild life was present as wild dogs, cats and rodents, particularly Agouti paca (paca) and Dasyprocta aguti (agouti).

Abstract: in 1998, the fmt/imt-am foundation implemented the surveillance system to diagnose acute undifferentiated febrile syndromes, with the objective of active and passive surveillance in brazilian western amazonian rainforest to identify and diagnose the etiologic agents of acute fever. the diagnoses were performed using serological tests to detect igm antibodies by elisa (enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay) cdc/opas or using commercial kits. a total of 8,557 serum samples obtained from patients with clinical suspicion of dengue virus were analyzed. elisa positive reaction to dengue virus was presented by 40% of the serum samples and 26% of the serum samples had positive elisa reactions to other exanthematous viral diseases, such as rubella, measles, parvovirus, oropouche virus and mayaro virus.

Abstract: introduction: manaus, the capital city of the state of amazon with nearly 2 million inhabitants, is located in the middle of the amazon rain forest and has suffered dengue outbreaks since 1998. methods: in this study, blood samples were investigated using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (rt-pcr), aimed at identifying dengue virus serotypes. results: acute phase sera from 432 patients were tested for the presence of dengue virus. out of the 432 patients, 137 (31.3%) were found to be positive. all the four dengue virus serotypes were observed. conclusions: the simultaneous circulation of the four dengue serotypes is described for the first time in manaus and in brazil.

Abstract: carbapenemase production is an important mechanism of carbapenem resistance among nonfermentative gram-negative isolates. this study aimed to report the detection of blaoxa-58 gene in multiresistant clinical isolates of acinetobacter baumannii recovered from inpatients in a public hospital. polymerase chain reaction tests were performed to detect the blaoxa-23-like, blaoxa-24-like, blaoxa-58-like and blaoxa-51-like genes. the blaoxa-58 and blaoxa-23 genes were detected in one and three isolates, respectively. sequencing of the blaoxa-58-like amplicon revealed 100% identity with the a. baumannii blaoxa-58 gene listed in the genbank database. this is the first report of an oxa-58-producing a. baumannii isolate in rio de janeiro, brazil.
Differences in Brazilian strains of Schistosoma mansoni evaluated by means of morphometric analysis of cercariae of both sexes

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762000000600015
Abstract: morphometrics of brazilian strains (bh, sj and cmo) of schistosoma mansoni cercariae were obtained with a computerized image analyzer (image pro plus, media cybernetics), considering the following characters: body area, tail, furcae, oral and ventral suckers and distance between them. for statistical analysis, the variance test (one-way anova) was applied and significant differences of p< 0.05 were considered. all morphometric values in the bh strain were significantly higher (p< 0.05) than in the others. lower values were obtained in females of sj strain for all characters, excepting the body area. only this character showed to be significantly different in males and females of the three strains. specimens of both sexes in the bh and sj strains showed significant differences regarding all characters. it was observed that this morphometric analysis permits the characterization of strains and also the sex identification in s. mansoni cercariae. due to its feasibility, this method can be applied as a tool in laboratories devoid of more complex equipment.

Abstract: objectives: identify hiv infected pregnant women in a referral center and investigate characteristics related to infection and parity. methods: a cross-sectional study comprising all hiv infected women treated at the high risk prenatal care in the hospital das clínicas da universidade federal de minas gerais, in 2004. demographic data, hiv epidemiology infection and obstetrical history were collected. for statistical analysis spss 12.0 was used. results: eighty five women median aged 29.1 and 90 pregnancies were followed-up. in 55 pregnancies (61.1%) women had prior information of the infection. sixty four (71.1%) informed they lived together. probably they all acquired hiv in heterosexual relations. fifty four (60%) were diagnosed during one of the pregnancies. the global pregnancies median was 3.5, and 1.71 following diagnosis. patients with prior diagnosis had a higher pregnancy median as compared to those who were diagnosed during their pregnancies (p = 0.002). eighty six pregnant women made use of anti-retroviral medication, 56.7% through therapeutic indication. no vertical transmission cases were determined. conclusions: new pregnancies in hiv infected women are not rare notwithstanding contraceptive resources offered. therefore, further investigations are necessary to identify what difficulties not previously approached they have during routine medical assistance.

Abstract: hantavirus disease is caused by the hantavirus, which is an rna virus belonging to the family bunyaviridae. hantavirus disease is an anthropozoonotic infection transmitted through the inhalation of aerosols from the excreta of hantavirus-infected rodents. in the county of itacoatiara in the state of amazonas (am), brazil, the first human cases of hantavirus pulmonary and cardiovascular syndrome were described in july 2004. these first cases were followed by two fatal cases, one in the municipality of maués in 2005 and another in itacoatiara in 2007. in this study, we investigated the antibody levels to hantavirus in a population of 1,731 individuals from four different counties of am. sera were tested by igg/igm- enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay using a recombinant nucleocapsid protein of the araraquara hantavirus as an antigen. ten sera were igg positive to hantavirus (0.6%). among the positive sera, 0.8% (1/122), 0.4% (1/256), 0.2% (1/556) and 0.9% (7/797) were from atalaia do norte, careiro castanho, itacoatiara and lábrea, respectively. none of the sera in this survey were igm-positive. because these counties are distributed in different areas of am, we can assume that infected individuals are found throughout the entire state, which suggests that hantavirus disease could be a local emerging health problem.
