Gomes-Carneiro, Maria Regina;Ribeiro-Pinto, Luís Felipe;Paumgartten, Francisco José Roma;

Abstract: carcinogenesis is a highly complex process involving both inherited risk factors and environmental ones such as diet, smoking, occupation, and exposure to radiation and chemical agents. experimental toxicology identifies potentially carcinogenic chemicals and thus makes it possible to introduce regulatory measures aimed at reducing human exposure to them. carcinogenesis can be viewed as consisting of three distinct sequences: initiation, promotion, and progression. neoplastic conversion (initiation) occurs when a genetic event (e.g., point mutations, chromosomal rearrangements, insertion or deletion of genes, and gene amplification) results in oncogene activation and/or lack of expression - or inactivation of products - of tumor suppressor genes. promotion involves clonal expansion of initiated cells and requires cell proliferation. effective strategies for reducing risk of gastric cancer or neoplasias at other sites should include both control of known carcinogens and chemical prevention through rational interventions in the carcinogenic process. the toxicologist's challenge is thus to devise better and less expensive predictive assays and to elucidate the mechanisms underlying chemical carcinogenesis.

A toxicologia experimental identifica as substancias químicas potencialmente carcinogênicas e torna possível medidas regulatórias que objetivam reduzir a exposi o humana a elas.

Abstract: purpose: to investigate the main factors associated with fetal death in the city of recife, pernambuco, brazil. methods: an observational, case-control study, including cases attended from june 1st 2004 to 31st march 2005. a number of 116 stillbirth cases and 472 live birth controls, with deliveries assisted at the service, were included. the cases were identified in the record book from the delivery room. the puerperium women were identified by the name and register number at a puerperium infirmary. the controls were selected, using the puerperium infirmary neighborhood criterion, identifying the beds with numbers immediately lower (two patients) and higher (two patients) than the patient's, as far as they had delivered live babies. in case they did not agree to participate in the research, the next beds with numbers consecutively lower or higher were approached. the χ2 association and fisher's exact tests were used when necessary to test the association between the independent (predictive) and dependent (stillborn) variables, considering 5% as the significance level. to determine the association strength, the estimate of relative risk for case-control cases, odds ratio (or) was used, with 95% as the confidence interval (ci). logistic regression analysis according to the hierarchy model was done to control confounding factors. results: the fetal mortality rate corresponded to 24.4 by 1,000 births. after the multivariate analysis, the variables which kept significantly associated with fetal death were: malformation (or=7.5; ci=3.2-17.4), number of pre-natal appointments lower than six (or=4.4; ci=2.5-7.5), hemorrhagic syndromes (or=2.9; ci=1.4-5.7), attendance in another hospital unit along the 24 hours which preceded the patient's admission in the institution (or=2.9; ci=1.8-4.6), mothers' age over or equal to 35 years old (or=2.2; ci=1.0-4.9) and schooling lower than eight years (or=1.6; ci=1.02-2.6). conclusions: it was found a high fetal mortality coefficient, t

Abstract: this paper presents some considerations on the alternative pedagogical proposal called "solidarity assimilation", the sa (baldino, 1995a). these considerations are made according to some perplexities which arose by observing how the traditional pattern of teaching works. since the concept of merit has changed, the sa is understood at an interventionist proposal, that is: not only achievement is taken into account, but also the work collectively performed in the classroom is rewarded with due fairness. the basic instrument of sa is a work contract which when negotiated by teachers and students, establishes links between assessment-approval modalities and cooperative work.
Silva, Maria Regina Gomes da;
Ciência & Educa??o (Bauru) , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-73131998000200005
Abstract: the present article is an extract of a thesis submitted for the earning of the doctorate degree in mathematics education (silva, 1997). the research remarks on the possibilities, consequences and epistemological reflections of the implementation of an alternative pedagogical proposal termed solidarity assimilation (sa). it was carried out during the academic year of 1995 in a calculus course in the formation of mathematics teachers at unesp - universidade estadual paulista - bauru campus, in brazil. according to baldino (1995a) the sa, in contrast to the so-called "traditional teaching in force", modifies the concept of merit by applying values going beyond those attributed to the achievement of abilitiy in content. besides awarding achievement, the sa takes into account the work in small groups as well as the work collectively performed in the classroom by all students. this is a kind of qualitative research, belonging to the research-action line (thiollent, 1992), according to which the teacher is also a researcher drawing on her/his own classroom as the theme of investigation.
