POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND COMPLEXITIES OF BLENDED LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION: The case of the University of Botswana
Regina K. MASALELA
The Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education , 2009,
Abstract: Blended/hybrid learning is dominating news in higher education as a training and educational delivery method of choice. It is seen as a link between instructors, learners and classrooms located in different places to enhance learning. Based on the interviews with 15 faculty members and one administrator that had direct experience with this form of delivery at the University of Botswana (UB) the findings suggested two major themes that dominated faculty members ’accounts: potential benefits and challenges of blended learning. The study was guided by the Diffusion of Innovation theory. The potential benefits of blended learning included improved pedagogy; engagement in learning; and added flexibility in the teaching and learning to mention a few. Faculty members perceived complexities such as lack of students’ readiness to use the course management system, slow network and breakdowns; lack of computers for students and lack of time. The article concludes by suggesting future directions for blended learning (BL) at the UB.

Revista Educa??o Especial , 2009, DOI: 10.5902/1984686x813
Educa o inclusiva. Educa o Especial.

Regina Egetenmeyer,Bernd K?pplinger
European Journal for Research on the Education and Learning of Adults , 2011,
Abstract: The quality of adult educators is on the agenda of European educational policy and thescientific community in Europe. In these contexts, professionalisation and qualitymanagement are often conflated. This paper is based on the hypothesis that qualitymanagement and professionalisation follow two different approaches. The paperoutlines the two approaches with a focus on their two different logics. After a briefcomparison of the two approaches, the paper examines the conflation of these twoapproaches in the expertise Key competences for adult learning professionals(Research voor Beleid, 2010). The paper ends with a plea for acknowledging theboundaries between professionalisation and quality management, and shows ways ofbuilding bridges between them without neglecting their essential differences
Role of food safety in procedures adopted for the purchase of minimally processed and fresh vegetables by foodservices
Rodrigues, Kátia Regina Martini;Salay, Elisabete;
Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-20612010000400040
Abstract: this research was designed to analyze whether the procedures adopted by foodservice establishments for the purchase of minimally processed and fresh vegetables favor the acquisition of safe products. this research investigated the purchasing policies of such establishments, whether self-managed or administered by foodservice contractors, in the municipality of campinas and its outlying districts. a random sample of thirty-nine establishments participated in the research. the instruments for data collection were pre-tested, and the actual interviews were conducted by trained personnel. comparative analyses were made using various statistical tests. all of the participating establishments purchase fresh vegetables, although only six of them use minimally processed ones. for most of the establishments, price is at least one of the most important criteria for the selection of a supplier, and they do not normally monitor the safety of the fresh products purchased (51.3%), nor do they make regular technical visits to guarantee quality (46.2%); moreover, most do not carry out a supplier development program. it is suggested that routine technical visits to suppliers should be adopted, as well as the creation of courses, such as those dealing with the safety of vegetables and supplier development, to be offered to foodservices.

Poles, Kátia;Bousso, Regina Szylit;
Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0080-62342009000100028
Abstract: the purpose of this study was to describe the background, attributes and consequen-ces of the concept of dignified death for children. the concept analysis strategy was used to evaluate the 40 articles found in journals in the medical and nursing areas, which studied or focused on the dignified death of children. the attributes of the dignified death concept include: quality of life, child- and family-centered care, specific knowledge about palliative care, shared decisions, relieving the child's suffering, clear communication, helpful relations and a welcoming environment. few articles bring the definition of a dignified death for children, and, when they do, such definition is vague and often ambiguous among the many authors. this aspect indicates that the concept is not defined consistently, demanding studies about its manifestation in the clinical practice, contributing with the care at the end of life in pediatrics.

Abstract: one of the greatest concerns at the moment is the question of food safety, since, despite great technological innovations in the production, storage and distribution phases, food poisoning cases continue to occur at an increasing rate. the objective of this work was to analyze the attitudes of consumers, retailers, wholesalers and producers toward the sanitary quality of in natura chicken eggs. in all, 152 women, 39 retail establishments (24 supermarkets, 3 hypermarkets, 6 open-air markets, 3 municipal retailers and 3 private retailers), 7 wholesalers and 7 grangers were interviewed. this survey showed that more than 50% of the women interviewed presented equivocal knowledge with respect to the size of the egg, the origin of the product and the color of the shell. refrigeration, an extremely important point concerning sanitary quality, was also incorrectly evaluated by almost 50% of the women interviewed. the questions of product origin, cleanliness and integrity of the shell, packaging and time for commercialization were correctly evaluated by more than 50% of the wholesalers interviewed, in opposition to the items refrigeration and best before date, cited as less important than the former items by those interviewed. in the case of the producers, refrigeration was the only item considered incorrectly. these results suggest the need for the implementation of campaigns focussed on education.

Lima, Kátia Regina de Souza;
Revista Katálysis , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-49802011000100010
Abstract: this article analyzes higher education policies promoted by the world bank in peripheral countries in the 1990s and the first decade of the new century. it found that the central guidelines of these policies (diversification of institutions of higher education, schools and financing sources) were implemented in brazil by the government of president luís inácio lula da silva. higher education has been treated as a business and placed in the hands of public-private partnerships in higher education through management contracts. this process has led to the deconstruction of brazilian public education as a social right and to the formation of a type of university suitable to the current phase of capital accumulation, particularly in a dependent capitalist country such as brazil.
