Metabolic Syndrome in Schizophrenia: A Non systematic Review
Marta Nascimento,Raquel Ribeiro
PsiLogos , 2012,
Abstract: Background: The link between mental illness and metabolic disturbances has been recognized since the beginning of the last century. The debate concerning medical morbidity in schizophrenia intensified during the last twenty years, especially after the introduction of atypical antipsychotics. Aims: To highlight some features of the metabolic syndrome in this population, specifically epidemiological data, underlying mechanisms and antipsychotic therapy. Methods: Non systematic review of literature. Results and Conclusions: Despite the different criteria used for the definition of metabolic syndrome, it is clear today that the schizophrenic population has the highest rate of metabolic syndrome. Additionally, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in this population demonstrates a geographical distribution similar to the general population. Although it hasn’t been recognized for years, schizophrenic patients’ vulnerability to develop metabolic disturbances isn’t entirely related to antipsychotic therapy. Actually, it results from an interaction of multiple factors, including hereditary, genetic, biochemical and environmental ones (which include antipsychotic therapy). Moreover, they are not exclusively explained by weight gain. Metabolic disturbances are one of the main concerns related to general psychopharmacology. The differences between typical and atypical antipsychotics in terms of metabolic syndrome are not completely established. However, clozapine and olanzapine are recognized to have the worst metabolic profile, amongst all atypical antipsychotics.
Nascimento, Warley M;Freitas, Raquel A de;
Horticultura Brasileira , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-05362008000100015
Abstract: the effect of maturation of umbels with and without floral stems was evaluated in this research. the 'beta cristal' cultivar, destined for pickle production, was used in this study. by the time of floral button opening, 200 umbels with about 70% of open flowers were selected and labeled at random. the experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design arranged using a factorial scheme 2 x 5: two lengths of floral stem (0 and 30 cm) and five harvesting times (closed capsules and 10% of seeds with black tegument; closed capsules and 90% of seeds with black tegument; closed capsules and 100% of seeds with black tegument; 10% of open capsules and 30% of open capsules). harvesting was performed at weekly intervals. seeds reached the most adequate moisture content between the third and forth harvesting. also, seed had the higher mass at the forth harvesting (1000 seeds = 3.78 g). umbel with floral stem increased seed mass by the second harvesting. seeds from the last three harvesting had the higher germination (above 88%) and vigor (above 52% in the first counting test); presence or absence of floral stem did not affect seed germination. in accelerated aging test, seeds from the last two harvestings had higher vigor (above 90%). seedling emergence was above 90% in seeds from the last two harvestings. the best time for seed harvesting is when 10% of the capsules are opened. at this time, no significant effect on the physiological seed quality was observed between umbels with and without floral stem.
Freitas, Raquel Alves de;Nascimento, Warley Marcos;
Revista Brasileira de Sementes , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31222006000300009
Abstract: the objective of this research was to examine the efficacy of the accelerated aging test for vigor evaluation of lentil seeds. four seed lots of the silvina cultivar were utilized. the initial quality of each seed lot was evaluated by seed moisture content germination at first count, speed of protrusion of primary root, and field seedling emergence. the accelerated aging test was conducted at 41oc for periods of 24, 48 and 72 hours, by the traditional and nacl saturated solution. the experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design. the saturated salt accelerated aging was efficient for vigor evaluation of lentil seeds, and the period of 48 hours at 41oc was considered as the most adequate procedure to assess seed vigor levels.

Simbalista, Raquel;Araújo, Marcelo;Nascimento-Carvalho, Cristiana M;
Clinics , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-59322011000100017
Abstract: objective: to describe the evolution and outcome of children hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia receiving penicillin. methods: a search was carried out for all hospitalized community-acquired pneumonia cases in a 37-month period. inclusion criteria comprised age >2 months, intravenous penicillin g use at 200,000 iu/kg/day for >48 h and chest x-ray results. confounders leading to exclusion included underlying debilitating or chronic pulmonary illnesses, nosocomial pneumonia or transference to another hospital. pneumonia was confirmed if a pulmonary infiltrate or pleural effusion was described by an independent radiologist blind to the clinical information. data on admission and evolution were entered on a standardized form. results: of 154 studied cases, 123 (80%) and 40 (26%) had pulmonary infiltrate or pleural effusion, respectively. penicilli was substituted by other antibiotics in 28 (18%) patients, in whom the sole significant decrease was in the frequency of tachypnea from the first to the second day of treatment (86% vs. 50%, p = 0.008). among patients treated exclusively with penicillin g, fever (46% vs. 26%, p = 0.002), tachypnea (74% vs. 59%, p = 0.003), chest indrawing (29% vs. 13%, p<0.001) and nasal flaring (10% vs. 1.6%, p = 0.001) frequencies significantly decreased from admission to the first day of treatment. patients treated with other antimicrobial agents stayed longer in the hospital than those treated solely with penicillin g (16±6 vs. 8±4 days, p<0.001, mean difference (95% confidence interval) 8 (6-10)). none of the studied patients died. conclusion: penicillin g successfully treated 82% (126/154) of the study group and improvement was marked on the first day of treatment.
Nascimento, Warley Marcos;Pinheiro, Fernanda;Freitas, Raquel Alves de;
Revista Brasileira de Sementes , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31222007000200002
Abstract: this work aimed to study the effect of ethephon in the sex expression in tetsukabuto type squash plants. the experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design, in a factorial analysis (3 x 4). the first factor was the ethephon doses (100, 200 and 300 mgl-1) and the second the number of weekly applications (1, 2, 3 and 4). ethephon promoted a temporary ginoicism, reducing considerably the labor of male flower elimination in female parents. a reduction was observed in the ratio between male and female flowers and the increasing doses. in addition, female flowers tended to increase in the early nodes. doses of 300 mgl-1 of ethephon applied three or four times was the best treatment and might be used for squash hybrid seed production.

BACKGROUND: hearing abilities of HIV carrier child. SECRETARIAT AND TEXTUAL PRODUCTION: ARGUMENTATION IN THE TEXTUAL GENRE LETTER OF DECLARATION O SECRETARIADO E A PRODU O TEXTUAL: A ARGUMENTA O NO GêNERO DECLARA O
Erivaldo Pereira do Nascimento,Raquel Ferreira da Silva
Revista de Gest?o e Secretariado , 2012,
Abstract: This article aims at describing the semantic argumentative structure of the textual/discursive genre Letter of Declaration, one of the documents with which the executive secretary frequently deals. This investigation is based on the Argumention Theory in the Language proposed by Ducrot (1988,1987). We also used the studies about Discursive Modalization proposed by Koch (2002), Castilho e Castilho (1993), Nascimento (2005), among others. Modalization is considered here as a semantic argumentative strategy, as it enables the speaker to make a statement or to express a point of view about the content of his/her enunciation, according to the interlocution. This study about the previously mentioned gender is qualitative, quantitative and descriptive. The corpus used is composed of 20 (twenty) Letters of Declaration issued by different organizations or private and public institutions. We perceived that in the Letters of Declaration analysed argumentation is achieved by the use of modalizers and argumentative operators, used by the speaker to produce different effects of meaning in the texts.
Folie à Deux – A Clinical Case of Folie Imposée in a Mother/Child Relationship
Marta Nascimento,Jorge Ramos,Vera Dindo,Raquel Ribeiro
PsiLogos , 2012,
Abstract: Background: Even though the origin of the concept of shared delusion is not consensual, the term folie a deux was introduced in 1877 by two french researchers – Lasègue and Falret. According to the original concept, a person (inductor), cognitively dominant, develops a delusional idea that progressively imposes to a second person (induced), with whom he keeps a close relationship. The four psychopathologic subtypes known – folie imposée, folie simultanée, folie communiquée and folie induite, were described in the final of the XIX century, but its classification and conceptualization was assigned to the american researcher Gralnick (1942). Aim, materials and methods: It is intended to highlight some clinical aspects of the shared delusion disorder, its epidemiological and psycopathogenic characterization and therapeutical approach. In order to achieve it, the authors presented a clinical case report and respective non systematic literature review. Results: It is a case of shared delusion of the type folie imposée in a pair mother/son. The inductor (son) suffers from bipolar disorder and asperger syndrome and shared with his mother (induced and carer) a persecutory delusion. Conclusions: It is highlighted the importance of a social isolation context and close contact between both members in the genesis of the disease; it is discussed the subject of the cognitive dominance between the inductor and the induced and the implications of the separation of the pair mother/son, as primary therapeutic action.
