Peace Studies are at present at a crossroads, critiqued for their too broad research programme, for their acritical stance with respect to the terminlogy used, and for the disconnection between research and action. This article proposes the reconceptualisation of Peace Studies’ theoretical nucleus, not just reclaiming peace as a central value, but also framing the research-action binomium within a culture of peace. The article takes as its starting point a critique of the conventional conflict narrative, which evolved with Boutros Ghali’s Agenda for Peace, since then reflecting a peace-centred narrative. However, despite the adoption of a new political agenda for peace, results in practice have not reflected this change, which has proved to be more formal than operational. Our article thus argues that peace and violence are not mutually exclusive, adopting the concept of the continuum of states of peace and violence and proposing a peace web, the better to frame the dynamics in question, with special attention to the area of implementation.

Abstract: This work intends to analyze the importance of the protection to national ecosystems as conditio sine qua non for the conservation of the national biological diversity. Of the theoretical analysis of the subject, starting of the legal concepts conferred its nomenclature-key (biological diversity, ecosystems and conservation), it is arrived a boarding of the Brazilian ambient legislation, with prominence to the Forest Code, in intention to inside verify the effectiveness of the rule of law of this process. Will it be the legislation capable to protect ecosystems and, thus, to guarantee the conservation of the biological diversity in Brazil? In face of the amplitude of the subject and the national wealth of biomas (forests Mata Atlantica and Amaz nia , hedge, scrub savanna, etc), the subject will be focused under the point of view of the conservation the national forests, opposing its necessities to the protection that the national legislation excuses to them, observing the Forest Code (Law n 4,771, of 15 of September of 1995).
A Bayesian Approach for Stable Distributions: Some Computational Aspects  [PDF]
Jorge A. Achcar, Sílvia R. C. Lopes, Josmar Mazucheli, Raquel R. Linhares
Open Journal of Statistics (OJS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojs.2013.34031
Abstract: In this work, we study some computational aspects for the Bayesian analysis involving stable distributions. It is well known that, in general, there is no closed form for the probability density function of stable distributions. However, the use of a latent or auxiliary random variable facilitates to obtain any posterior distribution when being related to stable distributions. To show the usefulness of the computational aspects, the methodology is applied to two examples: one is related to daily price returns of Abbey National shares, considered in [1], and the other is the length distribution analysis of coding and non-coding regions in a Homo sapiens chromosome DNA sequence, considered in [2]. Posterior summaries of interest are obtained using the OpenBUGS software.

Open Journal of Blood Diseases (OJBD) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojbd.2015.51002
Abstract: Primary liver lymphoma is extremely rare, in most of cases it is a B cell lymphoma. Usually the diagnosis is made in middle-aged individuals and most of them have a relatively short life expectancy. In this article, the authors present a case report of a 75-year-old woman with symptoms of three weeks of evolution of diffuse abdominal pain, asthenia and anorexia. The analysis showed cyto cholestasis and the radiological image with lush hepatomegaly because of a large hepatic mass. The patient started chemotherapy and actually is well twenty months after the end of the chemotherapy.
Left-Right Function of dmrt2 Genes Is Not Conserved between Zebrafish and Mouse

PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0014438
Abstract: Members of the Dmrt family, generally associated with sex determination, were shown to be involved in several other functions during embryonic development. Dmrt2 has been studied in the context of zebrafish development where, due to a duplication event, two paralog genes dmrt2a and dmrt2b are present. Both zebrafish dmrt2a/terra and dmrt2b are important to regulate left-right patterning in the lateral plate mesoderm. In addition, dmrt2a/terra is necessary for symmetric somite formation while dmrt2b regulates somite differentiation impacting on slow muscle development. One dmrt2 gene is also expressed in the mouse embryo, where it is necessary for somite differentiation but with an impact on axial skeleton development. However, nothing was known about its role during left-right patterning in the lateral plate mesoderm or in the symmetric synchronization of somite formation.
Determining the concrete stiffness matrix through ultrasonic testing

Engenharia Agrícola , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69162011000300003
Abstract: the determination of the modulus tangent (eci ) and of the modulus secant (ecs) of the concrete can be done using compression test but, to be simpler, it is used relations with characteristic strength (fck). relations are also used to determine the transversal modulus (gc) and, in the case of the poisson's ratio (ν), a fixed value 0.20 is established. the objective of this research was to evaluate the use of the ultrasonic propagation waves to determine these properties. for the tests were used specimens with fck varying from 10 to 35 mpa. for the ultrasonic tests were used cylindrical and cubic specimens. the modulus of deformation obtained by ultrasound was statistically equivalent to the obtained by compression tests. the results of modules obtained using the relations with fck was far away from those obtained by ultrasound or by compression tests. the poisson's ratio obtained by ultrasound was superior to the fixed value. we can conclude that the concrete characterization by ultrasound is consistent and, to this characterization the cylindrical specimen, normally used to determine fck, can be used.
Right ventricular structure and function as possible determinants of surgical outcome 30 years after repair of tetralogy of Fallot
Mesquita, Sonia F.;Snitcowsky, Raquel;Lopes, Antonio Augusto;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2003001300002
Abstract: objective: to identify the variables that may be involved in the persistence of symptoms (functional class ii, iii, or iv vs. i) in patients being followed up for 30 years after surgical repair of tetralogy of fallot. methods: fifty-three patients (27 women), who underwent corrective surgery for tetralogy of fallot between 1960 and 1970, were studied. their ages ranged from 7 months to 26 years. at the end of follow-up, 13 patients were asymptomatic and the remaining were in functional class ii (n=24), iii (n=15), and iv (n=1). to differentiate asymptomatic from symptomatic patients, the following variables were analyzed: age at surgery, need for widening the pulmonary ring and trunk, need for a second (2nd op) or 3rd operation, residual defect of the interventricular septum, residual regurgitation of the pulmonary valve, systolic gradient through the right ventricular outflow tract, right ventricular dilation or hypertrophy (rvh), cardiothoracic index (cti), right and left ventricular ejection fraction (rvef/lvef), and arrhythmias. results: the univariate analysis showed an association between the presence of symptoms and the 2nd op (p=0.03), an increase in the cti (p=0.0001), moderate to severe rvh (p=0.002), and dilation (p=0.0003). in the logistic regression model, the combination of the 2nd op (p=0.008), the rvh (p=0.002), and the reduction in rvef (p=0.01) determined the presence of symptoms. conclusion: despite the surgical treatment, right ventricular remodeling and performance were the major determinants in the late follow-up of tetralogy of fallot.

Abstract: infancy is a period of fast development and growth, characterized by great changes, particularly of body composition. its relation with the nutritional and health status makes its evaluation extremly important in this period of life. actually, there is a wide variety of body composition assessment methods based on different body composition models and principles. different methods can characterize body composition in a global and undifferentiated way, or in specific differentiating corporal components. body composition can be evaluated by simple methods, such as traditional anthropometry or involving more sophisticated measurements, such as bioelectrical impedance analysis or magnetic resonance imaging. in these review different methods of body composition assessment and their relevance when used in children are critically revised.
