Abstract: apple leaf roller, bonagota cranaodes (meyrick) is native from south america and it is one of the most important apple pests in brazil. its control is exclusively done by insectides and biological control isn't frequently applied. in this way is necessary to know the parasitoids associated with apple leaf roller. the objective of this study was to detect the parasitism occurrence on b. cranaodes eggs in the state of santa catarina (brazil). from january 2000 to november 2001; 1,700 masses were collected on leaves of apple tree, hydrangea macrophyla and hedera sp. in fraiburgo, santa catarina state. during this period egg parasitism was registered in 6.6% of masses where 22.3% of the eggs suffered parasitism. the parasite identified was trichogramma pretiosum. this is the first record of parasitizing of trichogramma pretiosum in b. cranaodes eggs in commercial apple orchards in brazil.

Abstract: O caupi (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) é um alimento básico das popula es do Nordeste brasileiro, devendo merecer aten o com vistas a melhoria da qualidade de gr os, resistência a doen as e pragas e aumento de produtividade. Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a variabilidade e o potencial genético de 28 linhagens, escolhidas após uma sele o para cor, tamanho de gr os e resistência a viroses. A produtividade apresentou coeficiente de varia o genético de 23,90%, e o valor agron mico, de 3,56%. O número de vagens por pedúnculo apresentou a menor estimativa do coeficiente de determina o genético (4,51%), e o peso de 100 gr os, a maior (81,74%). O coeficiente de determina o genético da produtividade foi de 34,15%. As maiores estimativas de ganho genético foram as do peso de 100 gr os (21,73%) e da produtividade (19,77%). As correla es genotípicas foram superiores às fenotípicas e às de ambiente, destacando-se as correla es entre número de ramos secundários e produtividade (68,13%), e valor agron mico e produtividade (100%). Estes resultados mostram amplas possibilidades de sele o entre as linhagens com rela o à maioria dos caracteres estudados.

Abstract: for the first time an electrical suction trap was used to collect specimens of trichogramma. the total of 551 trichogramma specimens were collected belonging to nine species namely t. acuminatum querino & zucchi, t. alloeovirilia querino & zucchi, t. bruni nagaraja, t. parrai querino & zucchi, t. pretiosum riley, t. pusillus querino & zucchi, t. tupiense querino & zucchi, t. zucchii querino and trichogramma sp. aff. pintoi. t. bruni was the most abundant and frequent species. the relative frequency was less than 2% for the remaining species. the electrical suction trap was shown useful to collected trichogramma specimens in areas where host insect eggs are difficult to find.

Abstract: according to some catalogues, trichogramma minutum and t. bennetti have been recorded in brazil. however, the information obtained in studies with trichogramma in recent years indicate that those species do not occur in brazil.

Abstract: ten species of trichogramma (t. acacioi brun, moraes & soares, t. atopovirilia oatman & platner, t. exiguum pinto & platner, t. fuentesi torre, t. galloi zucchi, t. lasallei pinto, t. lopezandinensis sarmiento, t. nerudai pintureau & gerding, t. pintoi voegelé e t. rojasi nagaraja & nagarkatti) were studied based on male morphology. a scanning electronic microscope was used to illustrate the most important characters. new host records are t. acacioi from hamadryas feronia (l.) eggs (brazil), t. nerudai from tuta absoluta meyrick eggs (chile) and t. lasallei from diatraea saccharalis (fabricius) eggs (uruguay, first record in this country).

Abstract: this work deals with the intra- and interespecific variations in trichogramma species, using the principal components analysis (pca) to evaluate the ordination standard among some species. six trichogramma species (143 specimens) namely t. acacioi brun, moraes & soares, t. atopovirilia oatman & platner, t. demoraesi nagaraja, t. distinctum zucchi, t. galloi zucchi and t. bruni nagaraja were examined. based on the shape three species groups were obtained: (1) t. acacoi and t. atopovirilia, (2) t. bruni, t. distinctum and t. galloi and (3) only specimens of t. demoraesi. the variables that more contributed for the species separation were mostly characters of the genital capsule and setae of mesoescuto and mesoescutelo. based on pca it was possible to show subtle differences among species as well as to evidence the intra-specific morphological variations, which are of great deal of importance to the taxonomic studies with trichogramma.

Abstract: cowpea (vigna unguiculata (l.) walp) is an important food crop for human population in northeastern brazil. studies aiming to increase its yield as well as to improve the grain quality and the insect and diseases resistance are needed. this work aimed to accomplish genetic studies in twenty-eight cowpea advanced lines. the studied lines were chosen after selection for seed color and size and plant viruses resistance. the degree of genetic determination ranged from 4.51% (in pods/peduncle) to 81.74% (in 100-seed weight). the seed yield degree of genetic determination was 34.15%. the highest estimates of genetic gain were 21.73% to 100-seed weight and 19.77% to seed yield. the genotypical correlations were higher than phenotypical and environmental ones. high correlations were found between fruiting branches/plant and seed yield (68.13%) and between agronomic value and seed yield (100%). this result indicates the selection feasibility for most of the studied traits.
Relative warp analysis to study morphological variations in the genital capsule of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

Abstract: the influence of the host on the morphology of the male genital capsule of trichogramma pretiosum riley was studied by geometric morphometric analysis. specimens of the parasitoid obtained from 10 different lepidoptera host species were used. initially, landmarks were defined and cartesian coordinates (x and y) for each landmark of the genital capsule of all specimens were obtained. the anatomic landmarks transformed to cartesian coordinates were then analyzed by generalized orthogonal least-square procedure. consensus configuration of the genital capsule for all specimens was obtained and partial and relative warps were determined. fifteen landmarks generated 24 relative warps for each specimen. the ordination of the relative warps (a = 0), using shape components, separated t. pretiosum into four different hosts groups: (1 - alabama argillacea (hueb.), helicoverpa zea (bod.) and diatraea saccharalis (fabr.); 2 - danaus plexippus erippus (cramer), hamadryas feronia (linn.) and spodoptera frugiperda (j.e. smith); 3 - anticarsia gemmatalis hueb., bonagota cranaodes meirick and diaphania sp. and 4 - anagasta kuehniella (zeller). the two first axes of the relative warps explained 83.0% of the total variation of the genital capsule shape of the specimens. the main difference was at the anterior region of the posterior extension of the dorsal lamina of the genital capsule. although results obtained were initial and exploratory they have demonstrated that subtle shape differences in the male genital capsule can be detected by geometric morphometric analysis.
Molecular Tool for Identification of Closely Related Species of Trichogramma (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae): T. rojasi Nagaraja & Nagarkatti and T. lasallei Pinto

Abstract: the sequence of the its2 (internally transcribed spacer 2) region of the rdna was used to identify two closely related trichogramma species: t. rojasi and t. lasallei, the second species recently reported in brazil. the dna of the samples was extracted using chelex 100. the pcr product was linked to a pgem-t? vector and both were then placed into petri dishes to grow white colonies, which demonstrate the correct ligation between the vector and the dna. from these colonies, 10μl were purified and sequenced using a special kit, and the sequences aligned using the esee 3.0 software. specific primers were efficient to amplify the its2 rdna region of the brazilian trichogramma. the sequence of each species differed in length and in nucleotide position, showing that they are distinct. thus, the results show that this technique is a good tool to identify trichogramma cryptic species, otherwise difficult to identify when using only morphological characters.

Abstract: the larvae of spodoptera frugiperda (j.e. smith, 1797) (lepidoptera: noctuidae), known as fall armyworm, is the main insect pest of corn crop and its control is done with chemicals. an alternative is biological control, in particular, the egg parasitoids of the genus trichogramma westwood, 1833 (hymenoptera: trichogrammatidae). for the effective application of biological control, it is necessary to evaluate the complex of species/strains occurring in eggs of s. frugiperda. with this objective, samples of egg masses of s. frugiperda were taken in the corn crop in the 10th distrito de arroio grande, santa maria, rio grande do sul state, where it was observed the first occurrence of trichogramma rojasi nagaraja & nagarkatti, 1973 (hymenoptera: trichogrammatidae) parasitizing eggs of s. frugiperda.. the occurrence of t. rojasi in eggs of s. frugiperda opens perspective so that this parasitoid can be studied in order to integrate biological control programs in corn in rio grande do sul state.
