BMC Research Notes , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1756-0500-2-230
Abstract: Three pumas killed 23 bighorn sheep over the course of the study, but they did not preferentially prey on marked (radiocollared) versus unmarked bighorn sheep. Predation occurred primarily during crepuscular and nighttime hours, and 22 kill sites were identified by the occurrence of 2 or more consecutive puma GPS locations (a cluster) within 200 m of each other at 1900, 0000, and 0600 h.We tested the "conspicuous individual hypothesis" and found that there was no difference in puma predation upon radiocollared and uncollared bighorn sheep. Pumas tended to move long distances before and after kills, but their movement patterns immediately post-kill were much more restricted. Researchers can exploit this behaviour to identify puma kill sites and investigate prey selection by designing studies that detect puma locations that are spatially clustered between dusk and dawn.Pumas (Puma concolor) are known predators of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in North America, but puma behaviour and movements associated with these predation events are poorly understood. Ross et al. [1] found predation on Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep to be an individual behaviour in Alberta, and Logan and Sweanor [2] and Ernest et al. [3] also presented evidence for differences in the frequency that individual pumas killed desert bighorn sheep in the southwestern United States. Although these studies identified individual pumas that selectively killed bighorn sheep, they left important questions unanswered. During ongoing studies of pumas and endangered bighorn sheep in the Peninsular Ranges of California, we radiocollared 3 pumas (1 female and her 2 offspring) who subsequently each killed multiple bighorn sheep (total ≥ 23). This gave us the opportunity to critically evaluate whether or not pumas selectively preyed on radiocollared versus uncollared bighorn sheep (because marked animals are more conspicuous), and to examine movement patterns at and around bighorn sheep kill sites. The Peninsular Rang

Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49892009000400001
Abstract: objective: to evaluate the public process for selecting and acquiring prescription drugs in the rosario municipality, argentina, during 2005, from the perspective of pharmaceuticals management. methods: a combination of management tools was used: a pareto analysis was used to prioritize the various drugs on the budget of the public health secretariat of the rosario municipality; therapeutic categories were reviewed to identify possible substitutions that would reduce spending on "unrestricted" prescription drugs (those not requiring proof of medical necessity); comparative analysis of drug prices was conducted and expenses were reconciled; and order fulfillment was reviewed as a means of rating suppliers. results: in 2005, a total of 371 medications were purchased: 12.4% of these medications (group a) absorbed 74.9% of the total budget; whereas 12.7% (group b) cost 14.9% and 74.9% (group c) used the remaining 10.2%. the largest proportion of the spending correlated with "unrestricted" prescriptions (group a: 82.1%; group b: 68%; group c: 58%), generally the first choice and most economical. the drugs in group a pertained to 21 therapeutic subgroups; savings opportunities were identified in five of them. the local price paid was 2.0 times more than the international reference price. four suppliers received 72.0% of the drug orders; however, three of them were responsible for the majority of fulfillment errors and the longest delays. conclusions: opportunities for cost-saving were identified, and as a consequence, for improving the general public's access to prescription medications. the prescription drug supply can be improved by putting in place a procedure for tracking delays and a process for evaluating and approving suppliers.
NEW OBJECTIVE METHOD FOR CALCULATING FIDELITY. EXAMPLE: THE ILLYRIAN BEECHWOODS

Annali di Botanica , 1999,
Abstract: The concept of fidelity and using character species has main importance in the methodics of Zürich-Montpellier phytosociological school. In spite of their long history and importance only few of papers study this question from methodical point of view. In this paper the fidelity concept and measures are shortly rewieved and Juhász-Nagy’s unfortunately not well-known fidelity concept is reconsidered. Information statistical (G2) functions are proposed to measure the three forms of fidelity. On the basis of this concept we suggest to distinguish faithful and character species. The application of new method is showed by an example: the Illyrian beechwoods.
Non-Boltzmann Statistics as an Alternative to Holography

Physics , 2005, DOI: 10.1142/S0217751X06029399
Abstract: An intriguing question related to black hole thermodynamics is that the entropy of a region shall scale as the area rather than the volume. In this essay we propose that the microscopical degrees of freedom contained in a given region of space, are statistically related in such a way that obey a non-standard statistics, in which case an holographic hypothesis would be not needed. This could provide us with some insight about the nature of degrees of freedom of the geometry and/or the way in which gravitation plays a role in the statistic correlation between the degrees of freedom of a system.
Breaking Of Conformal Invariance And Electromagnetic Field Generation In The Universe
A. Dolgov Randall
Physics , 1993, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.48.2499
Abstract: It is shown that the breaking of the conformal invariance in quantum electrodynamics due to the trace anomaly results in the generation of long wave electromagnetic fields during inflationary stage of the universe evolution. If the coefficient of the logarithmic charge renormalization is large (due to a large number of charged particles species), these primordial electromagnetic fields can be strong enough to create the observed galactic magnetic fields.
The Effects of a Single Bout of Exercise on Mood and Self-Esteem in Clinically Diagnosed Mental Health Patients  [PDF]

Open Journal of Medical Psychology (OJMP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojmp.2013.23013
Abstract: Objectives: Research has highlighted the importance of regular exercise within the general population and mental health groups in regard to mood and self-esteem, as well as single bout exercise within the general population. However, research into single bout exercise in mental health population is lacking. This study investigated the impact of a single bout of exercise, on mood and self-esteem, in patients with a wider clinical mental health diagnosis. Design: A quantitative questionnaire was completed immediately pre and post a single, 45 minute bout of moderate intensity exercise, consisting of the Brunel Universal Mood States (BRUMS) questionnaire and the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSE). Methods: Participants attending a mental health hospital with a clinical mental health diagnosis (N = 54) completed the questionnaire. Information regarding physical activity levels, mental health diagnosis and length of hospital stay were collated. Results: A significant improvement was identified on the RSE as well as the BRUMS (depression, anger, confusion, anxious tension and vigour) over time. Conclusion: The significant findings highlight the importance of exercise promotion within this population group, and the potentially beneficial role that a single bout of exercise can have on mood and self-esteem in patients experiencing mental health problems.

Abstract: the aps is the association of autoimmune endocrine diseases, with other non-endocrine autoimmune disorders, named mayor and minor components. this syndrome was classified in 4 types. the alterations of the immune response cause regulatory faults; and hla polymorphisms, among others; taken in conjunction with acquired or permanent factors, these represent triggers of autoimmunity. our objective was to find out the association of hla-drb1*-dqb1* in individuals belonging to two families, with diagnosis in at least one of them aps, or with isolated autoimmune diseases. to determine serum antibodies: a21-oh, agad and atpo and to observe the association with hla haplotype. we have studied parents and offspring of two families, two members who suffered aps type 2 and 3, and others with autoimmune diseases. we have looked for hla-drb1*-dqb1* and quantified a21-oh, atpo and agad. patients with aps 2 and 3 showed hla-drb1*0301-dqb1*0201. among the population we have studied, 5/9 had this hla haplotype and at least one positive auto antibody. we have found the genetic factor in 2/3 of the members with autoimmune diseases corresponding to greater components. the observed relation between aps and hla-drb1*0301-dqb1*0201, increases the possibility of identifying people at risk of catching autoimmune affections in familiar groups in which at least one member suffers aps.
