Santos, Rodrigo Augusto Lima;Henriques, Raimundo Paulo Barros;
Biota Neotropica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-06032010000100002
Abstract: in the present study, we investigated the communities of small mammals in rocky fields in the federal district. we examined the composition, abundance and richness and their relation to the structure of the habitat and if there is significant spatial variation in species composition among sites of rocky fields. small mammals were sampled by live-trapping techniques in seven sites. the total effort for the seven sites was 5.680 trap-nights; we captured 157 individuals in eight species of rodents. calomys tener and cerradomys scotti were the most abundant species in the study sites, with 47.1 and 18.0% of total individuals, respectively. the results showed that the areas of rocky fields of the federal district have a fauna of small mammals (average of four, range of variation of three to five species), comparable to other cerrado physiognomies. the complexity of the habitat proved to be a major determinant in the composition of communities of small mammals in rocky fields. there was a distinction between communities of small mammals of the sites of apa gama e cabe?a do veado and the sites of the apa de cafuringa. there was influence of the distance between the places on the composition of species with decreasing similarity with increasing distance among sites. the differences in environmental conditions, the structure of the habitat and the fact that it was possible two biogeographical regions may explain the faunal differences between the two regions.

Abstract: composition and diversity of medium and large size mammals in the cerrado of central brazil. studies about medium- and large sized mammals (> 1.0 kg) in disturbed areas in the cerrado showed that many species are adapted to anthropogenic environments. we investigated the structure of mammals assemblages in an area of 92,000 ha located in southwest of bahia and covered by plantations of pinus spp., soybeans and conserved strips of cerrado sensu stricto. the mammals were recorded in nine sampling campaigns of 12 days between january/2008 and may/2009 in diurnal and nocturnal transects that varied 5-15 km in length per campaigns totaling 3,600 km traveled/period. in this area 29 species were recorded, 23 through the line transect and others outside transect by indirect observation, capture and previous records. the mammal community consists mostly of representatives of the carnivora (41.4%) and omnivore species (36.7%). the only endemic species of cerrado recorded in the area was hoary fox, lycalopex vetulus. only 13.6% of species were present in all sampling (ozotoceros bezoarticus, pecari tajacu and tolypeutes tricinctus) and seven of which correspond to 91.73% of the records made. the species that had largest number of records (23.76%) is three-banded armadillo (t. tricinctus), probably this area holds the largest population of this endangered species in biome, highlighting the importance of avoiding areas of native vegetation are replaced by monocultures and reforestation. many of the species recorded are generalists in habitat use and widely distributed throughout the biome, occurring even in disturbed habitats. the maintaining of observed diversity in this area is due to its large size and the mosaic of environments that provide a greater variety and diversity of resources such as shelter and food, allowing also the presence of species with low densities and specialists in the diet and habitat.

Abstract: the influence of leaf maturity at harvest was evaluated to obtain the postharvest quality and deterioration of tannia (xanthosoma sagittifolium) leaves. leaves were harvested 5; 8, and 15 days after unfolding and stored in the dark until yellowing. at harvest, the leaves showed similar width and length. older leaves exhibited lower calcium oxalate content. soluble sugars and starch were significantly decreased with the leaf age at harvest. throughout postharvest ageing soluble sugars and chlorophyll contents showed trends of continued degradation in the leaves harvested in the three stages. deterioration was evident at 96 hours in the leaves harvested 5 and 8 days after unfolding, and 72 hours in the leaves harvested 15 days after unfolding. the rate of fresh matter loss was higher in leaves harvested 5 and 8 days than those harvested 15 days after unfolding.

Abstract As well as in any area of knowledge, the studies made by the Sciences of the Religions were marked by many determinant historical paradigmatic revolutions, which came to aid the rise of the Religion’s Phenomenology’s method. The goal of this study is to attempt, therefore, not only the presentation of this process of paradigmatic revolution but also to reveal the characterization of the favorable context of its emergence. For all that, we will bring back historical moments and important studious man, methodological overcomes; bestowing in focus Husserl’s phenomenological method as a facilitator of the emergence conditions of Otto’s sacred phenomenology, who in turn, grants the religious experience originating as a sufficient phenomenon to the description and evaluation of what comes from the relationship between the human being and the sacred. The phenomenological analysis proposed by Rudolf Otto, it overcomes positivist methodologies imprint, broke new ground. By introducing the concepts of Mysterium tremendum et fascinans, the author made it possible for studies in the area of Sciences of Religions, contact, recovery and research experiences purely anthropological as a relationship between the human and sacred. Key Words: Husserl, Otto, Phenomenology.

Germination of dormant seeds of Stylosanthes humilis as promoted by ethylene accumulation in closed environments
Ribeiro, Dimas Mendes;Barros, Raimundo Santos;
Brazilian Journal of Plant Physiology , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-04202004000200003
Abstract: germination of scarified dormant seeds of townsville stylo (stylosanthes humilis) is very low in petri dishes, but may be appreciable in sealed erlenmeyer flasks if ethylene accumulates in their atmospheres. when ethylene in the flask atmosphere was fixed by a mercuric perchlorate solution, emanation of the gaseous regulator and germination of dormant seeds were drastically decreased. on the other hand, ethylene produced by dormant seeds and accumulated in the flask atmosphere led to a further enhancement of ethylene accumulation and a corresponding increased seed germination. germination of both dormant and non-dormant seeds did not occur when ethylene biosynthesis was completely blocked.
A dual role of selenium in the growth control of seedlings of Stylosanthes humilis  [PDF]

Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/as.2011.22012
Abstract: The growth of seedlings of Townsville sytlo (Stylosanthes humilis H.B.K.) is inhibited by aluminium (Al) ions, their elongation being re-covered with sodium selenate at 1.0 µM. Methyl viologen and hydrogen peroxide, reactive oxy-gen species (ROS)-generating compounds, also inhibited seedling elongation and again growth was relieved by selenate. Selenate, thus, seemed to be operating as a ROS quencher, since N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant com-pound, also stimulated largely the growth of Al-inhibited seedlings. At a higher concentra-tion (0.1 mM), however, selenate inhibited seed-ling growth and elongation was recovered by NAC. Ethylene production by selenate plus NAC-treated seedlings was very higher and thus the gaseous hormone was not responsible for the seedling growth inhibition caused by sele-nate. Hence, it seems that at high levels sele-nate operates as a ROS-generating compound whose effects were counteracted by NAC. It can be deduced that, at low concentration, sele-nates behave as a ROS quencher and at high level as a ROS-promoting species.
Effects of autoclaving on the physiological action of paclobutrazol  [PDF]
Dimas Mendes Ribeiro, Caroline Müller, Jackson Bedin, Glayton Botelho Rocha, Raimundo Santos Barros
Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/as.2011.23026
Abstract: Besides being employed as an efficient plant growth retardant for field, garden and potted plants, paclobutrazol (PBZ) is also used in laboratory experiments, mainly in aseptic cultures, both in autoclaved and non-autoclaved form. Therefore it is not known if autoclaving can partial or completely inactivates the product, thus decreasing its efficacy. Thus a simple experiment was carried out to assess to what extent the autoclaving process can affect some growth components and dry mass accumulation and partition in sunflower seedlings, by employing the techniques of plant Growth Analysis. Autoclaving did not modify either qualitative or quantitatively any of the plant responses to PBZ as well their reversions by gibberellic acid.
