Sobrepeso/obesidade em adolescentes de Santa Maria-RS: prevalência e fatores associados

Abstract: obesity is a worldwide epidemic that keeps on rising among children and adolescents from several countries. the purpose of this study was to verify the prevalence of overweight/obesity and its correlates in adolescents enrolled in the 1st year of high school in the municipality of santa maria, state of rio grande do sul, brazil. a cross-sectional, school-based, study was performed during the second semester of 2008. adolescents aged 14 to 18 years old responded to a questionnaire and had their body mass and stature measured. the prevalence of overweight and obesity was defined according to the brazilian reference for body mass index in adolescents. correlates of overweight/obesity were determined by poisson regression. the sample included 424 adolescents (54.7% boys) with mean age of 15.7 years (±0.89). the prevalence of overweight/obesity was 23.8% (95%ci; 19.75-27.85). after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the following variables were associated with overweight/obesity: sex (pr=2.45; 95%ci 1.63-3.68), having been dismissed from physical education classes (pr=2.73; 95%ci 1.88-3.95) and having a good relationship with classmates (pr=1.57; 95%ci 1.12-2.19). it was concluded that the prevalence of overweight/obesity in this sample was high, prompting the need for preventive programs of excessive weight in this age group.

Abstract: acacia caven (mol.) mol. is a native species from southwest rio grande do sul state, brazil, and there is no effective methodology for analyzing its seeds. the objective of this study was to evaluate treatments for overcoming dormancy and temperatures for carrying out germination tests for a. cavens seed. five treatments were used to overcome dormancy: control (t1); immersion of seeds in water at 40 oc for 24 h (t2); immersion of seeds in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite for 24 h (t3); mechanical scarification with water sandpaper no. 80 (t4) and incision in the region opposite to the micropyle (t5). the germination tests were carried out at constant temperatures of 20 oc, 25 oc and 30 oc, under artificial light, on a paper substrate. the experimental design was completely randomized with four replications of 50 seeds. the data as percentages were transformed into arcsine and the means compared by tukey's test at the 5% probability level. the most efficient treatments for overcoming dormancy were the t4 and the t5. the highest germination was obtained under a constant temperature of 30 oc. the germination test can be finalized after seven days and first count on the fifth day.
Phytochemical characterization of essential oil from Ocimum selloi

Abstract: Ocimum selloi Benth, a native plant of Brazil, has medicinal uses as anti-diarrheic, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory product. The yield of essential oils of the inflorescences, containing flowers and seeds, was 0.6%, and the yield of leaves, collected in two different seasons, was 0.25% (June 2000) and 0.20% (January 2001), respectively. The essential oils of the inflorescences and leaves presented as major constituents trans-anethol (41.34%, 45.42%, 58.59%) and methyl chavicol (27.10%, 24.14%, 29.96%).

Abstract: among the aromatical herbs, basil is of great economic importance in brazil. this species is used as fresh herb and also for essential oil extraction. to evaluate the productivity of basil in protected environment, two species, ocimum minimum l. (narrow leaf basil) and ocimum basilicum l. (wide leaf basil) were cultivated under greenhouse conditions, using a hydroponic system and two types of substrata. the experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with three repetitions. samples were obtained during the flowering period. the yield and the chemical composition of the essential oils were evaluated. the highest yield of green mass from the two species, was obtained in the hydroponic system, with higher productivity (aprox. 44%) than the plants cultivated in prepared commercial substratum. plants of ocimum minimum l. produced more essential oil (aprox. 10%) than plants of ocimum basilicum l. significant differences were found in the chemical composition of essential oil between species. no differences were observed in the chemical composition of essential oil, comparing the three cultivation systems.

Volatile compounds in the thermoplastic extrusion of bovine rumen

Abstract: the volatile compounds of raw and extruded bovine rumen, extracted by dynamic headspace, were separated by gas chromatography and analyzed by gc-ms. raw and extruded materials presented thirty-two volatile compounds. the following compounds were identified in raw bovine rumen: heptane, 1-heptene, 4-methyl-2-pentanone, toluene, hexanal, ethyl butyrate, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, heptanal, limonene, nonanal, dodecane, tridecane, tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecane, heptadecane and octadecane. the following compounds were identified in the extruded material: 1-heptene, 2,4-dimethylhexane, toluene, limonene, undecane, tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecane, heptadecane, octadecane and nonadecane. mass spectra of some unidentified compounds indicated the presence of hydrocarbons with branched chains or cyclic structure.
Chemical Composition and Larvicidal Activity against Aedes aegypti Larvae of Essential Oils from Four Guarea Species

Abstract: The essential oils of four Guarea species collected at Manaus (Amazonas, Brazil) were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-MS. Except for one diterpene detected, the compounds identified in the essential oils were hydrocarbons and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. The major sesquiterpenes were α-santalene (26.26%) and α-copaene (14.61%) from G. convergens branches; caryophyllene epoxide (40.91%) and humulene epoxide II (14.43%) from G. humaitensis branches; cis-caryophyllene (33.37%) and α-trans-bergamotene (11.88%) from G. scabra leaves; caryophyllene epoxide (36.54%) in leaves and spathulenol (14.34%) in branches from G. silvatica. The diterpene kaurene (15.61%) was found in G. silvatica leaves. Larvicidal activity assay of essential oils against third-instar Aedes aegypti larvae revealed that at higher concentrations (500 and 250 μg/mL), all the essential oils caused 100% mortality after 24 h of exposure. The most active essential oils were those of G. humaitensis branches (LC50 48.6 μg/mL), G. scabra leaves (LC50 98.6 μg/mL) and G. silvatica (LC50 117.9 μg/mL). The differences in the toxicity of essential oils of Guarea species on A. aegypti are due to qualitative and quantitative variations of the components, therefore the larvicidal effect may be due to higher amount of the sesquiterpenes with caryophyllane skeleton.

Abstract: volatile compounds from green and roasted yerba mate were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and the flavor profile from yerba mate beverages was determined by descriptive quantitative analyses. the main compounds tentatively identified in green mate were linalool, a-terpineol and trans-linalool oxide and in roasted mate were (e,z)-2,4-heptadienal isomers and 5-methylfurfural. green mate infusion was qualified as having bitter taste and aroma as well as green grass aroma while roasted mate was defined as having a smooth, slightly burnt aroma. the relationship between the tentatively identified compounds and flavor must be determined by olfatometric analysis.
Essential oils from leaves of cryptocarya spp from the atlantic rain forest

Abstract: the essential oils from leaves of four cryptocarya spp endemic in the brazilian atlantic rain forest were obtained by hydrodistillation and shown by gc-ms analysis to contain mono and sesquiterpenes. the major components of the oil of cryptocarya moschata were linalool (34.3%), a-terpinene (17.0%), g-terpinene (10.4%), 1,8-cineole (5.8%) and trans-ocimene (4.8%), whilst those of c. botelhensis were a-pinene (22.7%), b-pinene (9.2%), trans-verbenol (8.4%), trans-pinocarveol (5.5%) and myrtenal (5.4%). the principal compounds of c. mandioccana oil were b-caryophyllene (13.8%), spathulenol (10.2%), caryophyllene oxide (7.8%), d-cadinene (6.9%) and bicyclogermacrene (6.4%), whilst those of c. saligna were germacrene d (15.5%), bicyclogermacrene (13.8%), spathulenol (11.8%) and germacrene b (5.7%).

E de maneira mais ampla, como produzir um conhecimento em educa o que se experimenta corporal e coletivamente? Seguramente, percebe-se o risco e a ousadia da empreitada.
