Abstract: the prevalence of anti-lentiviruses antibodies of small ruminants was investigated in goat herds in the city of teresina, pi, brazil. a seroepidemiological survey was conducted involving 480 animals, apparently healthy, belonging to six rural properties. the diagnostic test was the agar gel immunodiffusion (agid), using antigens produced from cellular cultures infected with caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (caev cork). prevalences by gender and age were estimated considering sampling fractions for each farm. a general prevalence of 4.2%, was observerved, being 4.2% for females and 3.6% for males. prevalences were higher among older goats. regarding the breed standard, 23.5% were of the anglo nubian, 5.9% of the boer, 35.3% anglo nubian x boer crossbred, and 35.3% of undefined breed. it is concluded that small ruminant lentiviruses are endemic among goat herds of teresina.
Development of new heparin-like compounds and other antithrombotic drugs and their interaction with vascular endothelial cells

Abstract: The anticlotting and antithrombotic activities of heparin, heparan sulfate, low molecular weight heparins, heparin and heparin-like compounds from various sources used in clinical practice or under development are briefly reviewed. Heparin isolated from shrimp mimics the pharmacological activities of low molecular weight heparins. A heparan sulfate from Artemia franciscana and a dermatan sulfate from tuna fish show a potent heparin cofactor II activity. A heparan sulfate derived from bovine pancreas has a potent antithrombotic activity in an arterial and venous thrombosis model with a negligible activity upon the serine proteases of the coagulation cascade. It is suggested that the antithrombotic activity of heparin and other antithrombotic agents is due at least in part to their action on endothelial cells stimulating the synthesis of an antithrombotic heparan sulfate.

Abstract: in order to develop a linear programming model to simulate the activity level which optimizes irrigation, this paper uses data of the farm "lagoa do fog?o", owned by the sakai family, in the guaíra (sp) county, of which 207 ha are irrigated by three center-pivot systems. the objective functions consisted in maximizing the net income of the farm. winter crops usually cultivated under irrigation in this farm are: industrial tomatoes, wheat, potatoes, peas and beans. the restrictions to the objective function were area, water and markets. the following was concluded: (a) in the area under center-pivot 1, tomatoes (33 ha) and beans (61 ha) should be cultivated; under center-pivot 2, beans (64 ha), and under center-pivot 3 there should be no cultivation with irrigation due to lack of water, (b) to increase the irrigated area under center-pivot 1 beyond the 94 ha until 100 ha, a maximum of us$ 1,815.20 for each extra hectare, may be paid, (c) in the area under center-pivot 2, it was possible to grow 64 ha of beans, using all the available water, that is 125 dm.ha. for the use of higher water amount, the maximum expenditure may come up to us$ 921.42 for each extra 1000 m3 used.

Abstract: ziziphus joazeiro mart. is a brazilian tree endemic to caatinga and has been largely used in the northeast of brazil. its seeds present tegument dormancy and this work aimed to evaluate pre-germinative treatments with concentrated sulfuric acid to break dormancy. experimental design was completely randomized, with 9 treatments, i.e. 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, and 240 min of immersion in concentrated sulfuric acid a.r. with three replicates of 50 seeds, in two experiments. in experiment 1, newly collected seeds were evaluated for 140 days. in experiment 2, 5-month stored seeds were evaluated for 100 days. ziziphus joazeiro presents dormancy imposed by the endocarp that involves the seeds, and sulfuric acid should be used for 180 min on newly collected seeds and for 240 or 270 min on 5-month stored seeds in order to reach 80% emergence. seed storage time may influence the germinative response, with faster emergence after 5-month storage.

Abstract: the distribution and structure of heparan sulfate and heparin are briefly reviewed. heparan sulfate is a ubiquitous compound of animal cells whose structure has been maintained throughout evolution, showing an enormous variability regarding the relative amounts of its disaccharide units. heparin, on the other hand, is present only in a few tissues and species of the animal kingdom and in the form of granules inside organelles in the cytoplasm of special cells. thus, the distribution as well as the main structural features of the molecule, including its main disaccharide unit, have been maintained through evolution. these and other studies led to the proposal that heparan sulfate may be involved in the cell-cell recognition phenomena and control of cell growth, whereas heparin may be involved in defense mechanisms against bacteria and other foreign materials. all indications obtained thus far suggest that these molecules perform the same functions in vertebrates and invertebrates.

Abstract: the antibody response to the clostridium novyi type b alfa toxin component of 13 commercial vaccines (t1 to t13) and a standard toxoid was evaluated by the serum neutralization test with rabbit and cattle sera and by direct challenge of vaccinated guinea pig. t1 and t10 induced titles of c. novyi type b alfa antitoxin in rabbits, superior to the recommended minimum title of 3.5 iu/ml, namely of 8 and 12 iu/ml, respectively. t2 and t5 induced titles of 2 and 3 iu/ml, respectively. these, plus t1 and t10, were also the only vaccines which produced detectable antitoxin in bovine sera. t1, t2, t5 and t10, plus t11, were able to protect all the vaccinated guinea pigs at the challenge. most of c. novyi type b vaccines in brazil was unable to induce the minimum antibody response recommended for approval of the product.
The Development of Mathematical Model for the Prediction of Ageing Behaviour for Al-Cu-Mg/Bagasse Ash Particulate Composites  [PDF]

Abstract: The thermal ageing behaviour model of Al-Cu-Mg/Bagasse ash particulate composites with 2- 10wt% bagasse ash particles produced by double stir-casting method was developed in terms of weight fraction of bagasse ash, ageing temperature and time. Hardness values measurement was used in determining the ageing behaviour, after solution and age-hardened heat-treatment. The experimental results demonstrate that the bagasse ash was the major parameter in the ageing behaviour, followed by ageing temperature. The hardness values decreased as the ageing time increases, interaction of weight of bagasse ash, ageing time and ageing temperature. Moreover, the optimal combination of the testing parameters could be predicted. The predicted hardness values were found to lie close to that of the experimentally observed ones. The developed mathematical model can be employed for optimization of the process parameters of the ageing behaviour of Al-Cu-Mg/Bagasse ash particulate composites with respect to hardness values.

Abstract: aiming to obtain a mathematical equation, which by the linear dimensions of the leaf blades, would allow to estimate the leaf areas of cissampelos glaberrima, the relations between real leaf area (sf) and leaf blade dimensional parameters, such as length of the main vein and the maximum width (l) perpendicular to the main vein, were studied. the simple linear, exponential and geometric equations can be used for estimation of the leaf area for the weed cissampelos glaberrima. from a practical viewpoint, it is suggested to choose the simple linear equation of the regression model, using the c*l, applying the equation sf = 0.7878 (c*l), which is equivalent to taking 78.78% of the product between length of the main vein and the maximum width, with correlation coefficient of 0.9307.
