Methods and results: These copolymers could self-assemble into micelles with positive charges. The size and zeta potential of the micelles was measured, and the results indicate that temperature had a large effect on the micelles obtained. In vitro gene transfection evaluation in cancer cells indicated that the self-assembled micelles could serve as potential gene delivery vectors. In addition, hydrophobic drug entrapment efficiency and codelivery with the gene was also studied in vitro. The self-assembled micelles could load doxorubicin efficiently and increase cellular uptake in vitro, while maintaining high gene transfection efficiency. Conclusion: The triblock copolymer mPEG–PCL-g–PEI could be a novel vector for codelivery of drug and gene therapy.

The development of efficient and adequate gene delivery systems could be one of the most important factors. Polyethyleneimine, a cationic polymer, is one of the most successful and widely used vectors for nonviral transfection in vitro and in vivo. Methods: A novel biodegradable poly(ester amine) copolymer (PEA) was successfully prepared from low molecular weight polyethylenimine (PEI, 2000 Da) and poly(L-lactide) copolymers. Results: According to the results of agarose gel electrophoresis, particle size and zeta potential measurement, and transfection efficiency, the PEA copolymers showed a good ability to condense plasmid DNA effectively into nanocomplexes with a small particle size (≤150 nm) and moderate zeta potential (≥10 mV) at an appropriate polymeric carrier/DNA weight ratio. Compared with high molecular weight PEI (25kDa), the PEA obtained showed relatively high gene transfection efficiency as well as low cytotoxicity in vitro. Conclusion: These results indicate that such PEA might have potential application as a gene delivery system.

Recently, we developed a novel nonviral gene carrier, ie, heparin-polyethyleneimine (HPEI) nanoparticles for this purpose. Methods and results: HPEI nanoparticles were used to deliver plasmid-expressing mouse survivin-T34A (ms-T34A) to treat C-26 carcinoma in vitro and in vivo. According to the in vitro studies, HPEI nanoparticles could efficiently transfect the pGFP report gene into C-26 cells, with a transfection efficiency of 30.5% ± 2%. Moreover, HPEI nanoparticle-mediated ms-T34A could efficiently inhibit the proliferation of C-26 cells by induction of apoptosis in vitro. Based on the in vivo studies, HPEI nanoparticles could transfect the Lac-Z report gene into C-26 cells in vivo. Intratumoral injection of HPEI nanoparticle-mediated ms-T34A significantly inhibited growth of subcutaneous C-26 carcinoma in vivo by induction of apoptosis and inhibition of angiogenesis. Conclusion: This research suggests that HPEI nanoparticle-mediated ms-T34A may have a promising role in C-26 colon carcinoma therapy.

Quercetin (QU) is a potent anti-inflammatory agent; however, its poor water solubility restricts its clinical application. In an attempt to improve water solubility of QU, biodegradable monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (MPEG-PCL) micelles were used to encapsulate QU by self-assembly methods, creating QU/MPEG-PCL micelles. These QU/MPEG-PCL micelles with DL of 7% had a mean particle size of ~34 nm, and could release QU for an extended period in vitro. The in vivo study indicated that intravesical application of MPEG-PCL micelles did not induce any toxicity to the bladder, and could efficiently deliver cargo to the bladder. Moreover, the therapeutic efficiency of intravesical administration of QU/MPEG-PCL micelles on acute cystitis was evaluated in vivo. Results indicated that QU/MPEG-PCL micelle treatment efficiently reduced the edema and inflammatory cell infiltration of the bladder in an Escherichia coli-induced acute cystitis model. These data suggested that MPEG-PCL micelle was a candidate intravesical drug carrier, and QU/MPEG-PCL micelles may have potential application in acute cystitis therapy.

In this work, biodegradable micelles made from star-shaped poly (ε-caprolactone)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL/PEG) copolymer were prepared and used to deliver doxorubicin (Dox) in vitro and in vivo. First, an acrylated monomethoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (ε-caprolactone) (MPEG-PCL) diblock copolymer was synthesized, which then self-assembled into micelles, with a core-shell structure, in water. Then, the double bonds at the end of the PCL blocks were conjugated together by radical polymerization, forming star-shaped MPEG-PCL (SSMPEG-PCL) micelles. These SSMPEG-PCL micelles were monodispersed (polydispersity index = 0.11), with mean diameter of ≈25 nm, in water. Blank SSMPEG-PCL micelles had little cytotoxicity and did not induce obvious hemolysis in vitro. The critical micelle concentration of the SSMPEG-PCL micelles was five times lower than that of the MPEG-PCL micelles. Dox was directly loaded into SSMPEG-PCL micelles by a pH-induced self-assembly method. Dox loading did not significantly affect the particle size of SSMPEG-PCL micelles. Dox-loaded SSMPEG-PCL (Dox/SSMPEG-PCL) micelles slowly released Dox in vitro, and the Dox release at pH 5.5 was faster than that at pH 7.0. Also, encapsulation of Dox in SSMPEG-PCL micelles enhanced the anticancer activity of Dox in vitro. Furthermore, the therapeutic efficiency of Dox/SSMPEG-PCL on colon cancer mouse model was evaluated. Dox/SSMPEG-PCL caused a more significant inhibitory effect on tumor growth than did free Dox or controls (P < 0.05), which indicated that Dox/SSMPEG-PCL had enhanced anticolon cancer activity in vivo. Analysis with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) showed that Dox/SSMPEG-PCL induced more tumor cell apoptosis than free Dox or controls. FLEETING MONOPARESIS AND AORTIC ARCH ATHEROMA

Abstract: A 72-year-old female with a history of hypertension and hyperlipidemia presented with alternating numbness, tingling sensations and weakness of both upper extremities with left shoulder pain. Each episode of these symptoms lasted about thirty minutes and reoccurred three times on either side of her upper limbs at about 2 hourly intervals. She had no associated headache, blurry vision, slurred speech or diplopia. Six years prior to presentation, she underwent a successful repair of an unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Significant findings include; blood pressure of 177/74-mm Hg and a radial pulse rate of 78 beats per minute, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) of 21, creatinine, and abnormal lipid profile. Head CT was negative. Chest x-ray showed calcification and tortuosity of the thoracic aorta. A trans-thoracic echo was negative for vegetation while trans-esophageal echocardiogram (TEE) showed a tortuous thoracic aorta and an ulcerative plaque with an overlying four-cm irregular mobile thrombus in the aortic arch and several small mobile clots. The patient treated with aspirin, heparin and placed on warfarin for one year at target I.N.R of 2.0-3.0. She was symptom free at one-year follow-up.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the spatial distribution and accessibility of Land Register Offices in Hungary. The spatial distribution of Land Register Offices, according to route distances, has an uneven characteristic. One reason for this fact is the different settlement structure of the various counties, the second reason is the uneven road system in Hungary. The accessibility of Land Register Offices is significantly different in various counties. Since the services of the Land Register Offices belong to the public services, it would be a real and justifiable claim to moderate this huge spatial difference.

Abstract: Le rejet par Claude Lévi Strauss du personnage de l’explorateur organise son exploration de l’Amazonie autant que sa quête de l’Indien. Le scientifique, entre les deux, est situé dans une position équidistante entre la clairvoyance et l’aveuglement. Le voyage frappé de la même opprobre est présenté, de fa on similaire comme un travestissement du nomadisme indigène. L’exploration des régions du totémisme ou de l’animisme est décrite comme une activité cérébrale, intellectuelle, passant par l’identification des structures fondamentales de mythes chargés d’organiser la connaissance du monde et ne devant pas grand chose au nécessaire mouvement des pieds. Pourtant, en observant attentivement la polarité doublement négative des pieds d’un explorateur de l’Amazonie, Jules Crevaux, on découvre des structures communes au territoire parcouru et au mythe moderne qui confirment de fa on paradoxale la pertinence des analyses de l’anthropologue. The rejection by Lévi Strauss of the explorer organise his own exploration of Amazonia as much as his quest for the Indian. The scientist, between those two characters, holds a medium position between blindness and foresight. The voyage , stuck by the same despise, is presented as a caricature of indigenous nomadism. The exploration of the countries of totemism and animism is described as a mental, intelectual activity based on the identification of the fundamental structures of the myths organising the knowledge of the world which has nothing to do with the necessary movement of the feet. Nevertheless, the carefull observation of the feet of an amazonian explorer, Jules Crevaux (1847-1882), reveals structures which are common to the covered territory and to a modern mythology. This structures give an unexpected confirmation of the efficiency of the anthropologist’s analyses.
Crainte et dépendance : le pouvoir sur les corps en Toulousain au xiiie siècle

Abstract: Au-delà du catharisme, les dépositions contenues dans les registres inquisitoriaux du xiiie siècle recèlent d'infimes détails qui apportent une dimension corporelle et sensorielle : à travers les comportements décrits, on touche aux émotions, aux sensibilités, aux gestes qui traduisent une sorte d'obéissance voire de renoncement des corps au service du seigneur. En s'appuyant sur la peur que les hommes disent manifester à l'égard de leur seigneur et qui les aurait conduits à mentir aux inquisiteurs, et sur les manifestations de crainte à l'égard du pouvoir judiciaire de l'Inquisition, il s'agit de comprendre l'origine d'un tel pouvoir qui conduit à l'obéissance et imprime sur les corps des marqueurs de dépendance. Le recours à d'autres sources, administratives et littéraires permet d'aller au-delà du catharisme et de la pression inquisitoriale, pour mieux comprendre à quel point tous les corps sont alors en dépendance, soumis à un fort pouvoir de contrainte. Beyond catharism, the confessions in the inquisitorial registers of the thirteenth century contain minute details who give information about the body and the emotions: thanks to the described behaviours, we can observe sensitivities, gestures expressing for instance obedience or self-denial of bodies in lord's service. This essay is based on the fright that deponents confess they feel regarding their lord and who could have them lie when facing inquisitors. Basing also this research on the manifestations of fear with regard to the judicial power of the Inquisition, we have to bring to the fore the origin of such a power which induces obedience and puts a mark of dependence on bodies. The resort to other documents, administrative and literary, allows to put catharism and inquisitorial influence aside, and to understand how much bodies are dependent, subjects to an important power of coercion.

Abstract: Professor Ra ková had been a member, and after her retirement, an honorary member of a number of scientific societies and editorial boards in Slovakia as well as abroad. To provide a list of all decorations and honours given to Professor Ra ková would take a lot of space. Of them, let us mention only that she had been decorated with the Finnish Sibelius Medal, the French medal of the of Académie de Lutec, the Gold Medal of European Pharmacological Societies for her contributions to the development of world pharmacology, as well as all the decorations obtained from the Slovak Academy of Sciences: Gold Medal of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Honourable Gold Medal of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for her contributions to biological sciences, and the Memorable Medal of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Professor Ra ková was an honorary member of the Learned Society of the Slovak Academy of Sciences
