Optimizing the operational conditions of a membrane bioreactor used for domestic wastewater treatment
Viana, Priscilla Zuconi;Nobrega, Ronaldo;Jord?o, Eduardo Pacheco;Azevedo, José Paulo Soares de;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132005000400015
Abstract: this study evaluated the performance of a sidestream membrane module combined with an aeration system for the treatment of municipal wastewater. to investigate the membrane's behavior and to control fouling, trials in laboratory units were conducted. in these tests, optimal values were established for some operational parameters, such as crossflow velocity, transmembrane pressure and air supply to continuously flush the membrane surface. air supply improved the behavior of the permeate flux over time. after six hours operation, the stabilized flux was 35 l/m2.h at a total pressure of 0.40 bar (wastewater pressure of 0.05 bar and air pressure of 0.35 bar) and reynolds number of 4,600. all permeate samples analyzed indicated absence of fecal coliform and escherichia coli.
Discourse Analysis: Ronald Reagan’s Evil Empire Speech  [PDF]
Juliana Vianna da Nobrega
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2014.41014

Language can be a powerful tool to convince others and make them cooperative. Cialdini (2007) has worked out several principles along which it is possible to analyze discourses in terms of their persuasiveness. Others also have contributed with tools to analyzing discourses such as Fairclough (2003). These tools are used to analyze the “Evil Empire Speech” of the US President Ronald Reagan that he held at the National Association of Evangelicals, 1983, in Orlando Florida. His historical speech was aimed at convincing the nation about the righteousness of his nuclear policy. He partly rewrote the already prepared script and included the “evil empire” part. The analysis supports that his speech was an exceptionally effective one. Reagan made his speech an example of the following principles of persuasiveness such as reciprocity, authority, commitment, liking, scarcity and social proof. He wanted support for belligerent intentions from a faithful community, which was already problematic, but he got the audience on his side through emphasizing his similarities with them, his own faithfulness, the presentation of strong examples and balancing humor and seriousness. Additionally, he introduced the striking metaphor “evil empire”, which stuck to the peoples’ minds and had an impact on them. He also appealed to the people through implicitly distinguishing the evil from the ones who were not evil—the US citizens. Thus, he made the American people feel better, to ensure them that they do the right thing when following him. He ranked religious people above him when he was joking about clergy men and politicians. To reinforce his authority, he borrowed the authority of various respected men through citing them. He improved his position and the power of his arguments using the philosophical wisdom of others.

Open Journal of Respiratory Diseases (OJRD) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojrd.2012.24016
Abstract: Thymomas are rare and usually slowly growing tumors, originating from the epithelial layer of the thymus. Prognosis depends on the extent of invasion of adjacent tissues whereby multimodality treatment including surgery with or without adjuvant chemoradiotherapy is the preferred approach for locally advanced thymomas. For metastatic thymomas, only few chemotherapeutic options are available. We report 2 cases of patients with metastatic thymic malignancies with a dramatic response on pemetrexed treatment. The choice for this antifolate therapy is based upon a small series. Because metastatic thymic neoplasm is a rare disease, large randomised trials are not feasible. Case reports on the treatment of these malignancies are very important and can provide readers with the opportunity to deal with rare dis- eases.
Determinants of Urban Worker Earnings in Ghana: The Role of Education  [PDF]
Priscilla Twumasi Baffour
Modern Economy (ME) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/me.2015.612117
Abstract: The paper examines the role of education in earnings determination by using all three rounds of the Urban Worker Survey of Ghana for 2004-2006 conducted by CSAE. The analysis is begun by investigating and comparing heterogeneity in earnings determinants amongst self-employed (informal sector), private sector workers and public sector workers with particular focus on education. An examination of the role education, individual and household characteristics play in facilitating entry into employment sectors is further undertaken in a multinomial logit model of occupational attainment in addition to analyzing the pattern of returns to education along the earnings distribution. After addressing biases associated with estimating earnings equations, it is observed that education plays an important role in promoting access to lucrative formal sector jobs, especially employment in the public sector but has no direct impact on earnings within the sector.
Education and Earnings Inequality in Ghana  [PDF]
Priscilla Twumasi Baffour
Modern Economy (ME) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/me.2016.74051
Abstract: The paper investigates the effects of education on earnings distribution of urban workers in the Ghanaian labour market between 1998/99 and 2005/6 by using the fourth and fifth rounds of the Ghana Living Standards Survey. To this end, quantile regression technique is applied to examine returns to education across the earnings spectrum to identify whether some workers benefit more from education with its implication on earnings inequality. Estimated returns to education along the earnings distribution point to a change in the pattern of returns between 1998/9 and 2004/5 along the earnings spectrum. Results indicate earnings inequalities have widened with education across the two periods. Specifically, in 1998/99, earnings inequality reducing trend of education observed has changed overtime. These results are robust when the labour market is disaggregated by sector.

Game characterizations and lower cones in the Weihrauch degrees
Hugo Nobrega,Arno Pauly
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: We introduce generalized Wadge games and show that each lower cone in the Weihrauch degrees is characterized by such a game. These generalized Wadge games subsume the original Wadge games, the eraser and backtrack games as well as variants of Semmes' tree games. As a new example we introduce the tree derivative games which characterize all even finite levels of the Baire hierarchy, and a variant characterizing the odd finite levels.
?El mapa es la ciudad? Nuevas miradas a la Forma y Levantado de la Ciudad de México 1628 de Juan Gómez de Trasmonte
Connolly, Priscilla;
Investigaciones geográficas , 2008,
Abstract: the beautiful "birds-eye-view" of mexico city by juan gómez de trasmonte is extremely well-known as almost the only surviving representation of the city in the seventeenth-century. the origin, intentions and history of this map are, however, less well-known. in fact, classical texts on the subject are mostly inaccurate or incomplete. incorporating new cartobibliographic evidence, this article reinterprets trasmonte's plan from the point of view of four methodological statements: i) the map is the territory. ii) the map is not the territory. iii) territories are maps and iv) the maps is the map. hopefully, this analysis contributes some innovative methodological principles for studying historical urban cartography.
