Abstract: in this study we prepared an inclusion complex between an iodide analogue of metronidazole (mtz-i) and cyclodextrin (cd) to develop a safer and more effective method of treating trypanosoma cruzi infections. according to our results, mtz-i and mtz-i:β-cd were 10 times more active than mtz, demonstrating that the presence of an iodine atom on the side chain increased the trypanocidal activity while maintaining its cytotoxicity. the selective index shows that mtz-i was 10 times more active against t. cruzi than it was against mammalian cells. the modification of mtz side chains provides a promising avenue for the development of new drugs.

Quadros, Claudio A;Lopes, Ademar;Araujo, Iguaracyra;
Arquivos de Gastroenterologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-28032010000400005
Abstract: context: in a previously published study, the variables lower rectal tumor site, preoperative chemoradiotherapy and large tumors were considered as independent risk factors for the inability of sentinel lymph node identification in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma. objectives: to determine if these variables could interfere in the precision and upstaging benefit of sentinel lymph node mapping in colorectal cancer. methods: a database composed of 52 patients submitted to lymphatic mapping using technetium-99m-phytate and patent blue was reviewed. only patients with tumors smaller than 5.0 cm, not submitted to preoperative chemoradiotherapy and without lower rectal cancer were included. results: with these parameters, 11 patients remained to be studied. the sentinel lymph node identification rate was 100%, with a sensitivity of 100%, negative predictive value of 100%, no false negatives and accuracy of 100%. sentinel lymph nodes were the only metastatic nodes in 36.4% of the patients, micrometastases (<0.2 cm or only identified by immunohistochemistry) provided an upstaging rate of 27.1% and metastases an upstaging rate of 9.1%. conclusion: the parameters proposed in this study for selection of colorectal adenocarcinoma patients to be submitted to sentinel lymph node mapping identified optimal accuracy and good upstaging results. as the number of included patients was low, these results could serve as guidance for proper patient selection in further prospective lymph node mapping studies in colorectal cancer patients.

Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912005000600015
Abstract: primary pelvic tumors are relatively rare, representing no more than 5% of primary bone tumors. we presented a case of a chondrosarcoma of the superior pubic ramus initially managed as an inguinal hernia and then operated under oncological principles. special attention is attributed to the importance for the correct diagnosis and surgical treatment given the low efficacy of adjuvant treatments for this type of neoplasia.

Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912003000300013
Abstract: chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasia that most of the time affects young adults. its location is preferentially the pelvic and scapular girdle and surgery is its treatment of choice. there are no role for chemo or radiation therapy, because of their low index of response. we describe a case of a 45 year-old male patient with an extensive low grade right umerus chondrosarcoma. in spite of the local extension, there was no invasion of the shoulder neurovascular structures. treatment proposed was the tikhoff-linberg procedure, and the operation was performed with success, with no complications. free margins were obtained. the patient is now on two years follow-up with no evidence of recurrent disease and is able to drive, fish and carry packs. he can not abduct his arm, but he could not do that even before surgery, due to severe pain. we believe this is an excellent conservative approach to such tumors, that otherwise would require a forequarter amputation, and strongly recommend the technique.
Oral traumatic neuroma with mature ganglion cells: A case report and review of the literature

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology , 2009,
Abstract: Traumatic neuromas are characterized by the presence of pain, burning, or paresthesia, associated with a history of trauma, normally surgery, in the same site. In the oral cavity, the most commonly affected sites are the lip, tongue, and mental nerve area. Pressure on the suspected area usually provokes pain. They microscopically consist of a proliferation of nerve fascicles embedded in a background of collagen. We present a case of a 42-year-old Latin American female patient complaining of a painful solitary nodule erupting on the lingual surface of the mandibular body. Histopathological analysis showed a traumatic neuroma associated with mature ganglion cells, which is an extremely unusual finding. After complete removal of the lesion the symptoms disappeared. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a unique lesion with unusual clinical and histopathological features reported in the English language literature.

Acta Scientiarum : Animal Sciences , 2008,
In order to study the effects of heterogeneity on bovine geneticevaluation, several structures of data were simulated with heterogeneity for different parameters, with and without genetic connexity among herds. The Genesys software was used to generate the data and the MTDFREML metodology was employed to analyze thisdata. The lowest values of the rank correlations (Spearman correlation) were obtained for the data structure of herds with heterogeneity for all parameters. For the structures of data with similar genetic means and heterogeneity for others parameters, the correlations between breeding values were greater than 70% and near those obtained for data without heterogeneity, which indicates that the heterogeneity for variances and phenotypic mean has little effect on genetic evaluation. The high genetic connexity of data improved theprediction of breeding values of bulls, but this effect was not noted for progenies and, mainly, the genetic evaluation of cows. The rank correlations based on predictions from single and multiple traits analysis were very similar, indicating that the multiple trait analysis was not efficient in eliminating the problems of genetic means heterogeneity.

Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1016/S0168-9002(03)02126-0
Abstract: The applications of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) have recently been extended by the development of counters with time resolution below 100 ps sigma for minimum ionising particles. Applications to HEP experiments have already taken place and many further applications are under study. In this work we address the operating principles of such counters along with some present challenges, with emphasis on counter aging.

Brazilian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: The influence of pharmacotherapeutic follow-up (PTF) on quality of life was evaluated in 45 HIV+ patients, who were undergoing initial antiretroviral therapy at a specialized care center in northeast Brazil. PTF lasted nine months and quality of life was analyzed at the 1st and 9th meetings using a questionnaire validated for Brazil. The study identified 643 problems related to antiretrovirals and there were 590 pharmaceutical interventions during the PTF. The comparative analysis between the results of the 1st and the 9th meeting was statistically significant for all domains of the questionnaire. For asymptomatic patients, only one domain was statistically significant. For symptomatic patients, six domains were significant. Patients with one year of HIV/AIDS diagnosis had statistically significant differences in five domains. The results suggest that the PTF contributed to improving quality of life, particularly for symptomatic patients and those diagnosed for at least one year - important target groups for Pharmaceutical Treatment.
