Aristotle’s Definition of Place and of Matter  [PDF]
Peter Drum
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2011.11006
Abstract: The accuracy of Aristotle’s definition of place is defended in terms of his form-matter theory. This theory is in turn defended against the objectionable notion that it entails matter is ultimately characterless.
Continuity and change in the organization of the architectural spaces of Huaca de la Luna and Platform A of Galindo, northern coast of Peru Abstract: Traditional perspectives concerning the series of events marking the transition between the Early Intermediate Period and the Middle Horizon in the Moche Valley indicate a rapid abandonment of the Huacas del Sol y Luna site, related to the development of the new urban center of Galindo. Archaeological evidence gathered during the last decade indicates a much longer occupation of the Huacas del Sol y Luna site. Moreover, architectural compound of Platform A at Galindo is reminiscent of a public plaza adjacent to Huaca de la Luna. The article

Negative feelings experienced by people with mental disorder in the workplace: A qualitative study  [PDF]
Hatsumi Yoshii
Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.59185
Abstract:

Mental disorders are a significant cause of disability and loss of workplace productivity. Many people with mental illness want to work. Occupational health in the world has to face up to psychosocial risks to protect the health of employees. My study aims are to improve negative feelings in work place and work functioning and to stimulate better coping mechanisms. Participants were collected from “Mental health daycare facility”, “Regional living assistance center” and “B-type employment assistance office” in Japan. I took interviews with 25 members. The content of the interviews was categorized about negative feelings in work place. A total of 33 small category negative feelings of mental disorder were extracted and were classified into 11 subcategories. These subcategories were then classified into two higher-level categories: inward-directed feelings and outward-directed feelings. Inward-directed feelings include “reserve or timidity,” “hesitation about being open about the illness,” “anxiety about being dismissed,” “regrets about resigning,” “sense of isolation,” “feelings of remorse,” and “suffering.” Outward-directed feelings include “failure in interpersonal relationships,” “distrust,” “frustrations,” “negative feelings toward those with mental disorder.” Employment has been linked to having better social networks, to enhanced quality of life and to overall wellbeing. We will have to defend them legally. The legal and moral obligations placed on the employer require that it provides a healthy, harassment-free work environment.

In Situ : Revue de Patrimoines , 2012, DOI: 10.4000/insitu.7011

Abstract: this work studies the reconfiguration of space, specifically of place, non-place and in between place, of the hawkers and traveling salesmen of the state of minas gerais in brazil. this is important to enable us to analyze new views about the job-private life duo, but in an inverse direction. what we call "inversion" is the externality of capital in the worker's life. this reconfigures space through symbolic apprehensions outside organizations as well, replacing the self-constitution of their space by the hawkers and traveling salesmen through work. to this end, we used the elements of oral history and of imaginary structures interwoven in the symbolic universe. the findings indicate the existence of a to-and-fro movement, in which the re-signification of work occurs by the adoption of new technologies, remodeling the relation between time and space. this is also sensitive to the reduction of privacy that is due to the controlling omnipresence of the firm. moreover, the study found that the family sets the place and non-place boundaries in the affective relations, and it is also the main reason why hawkers and traveling salesmen choose to establish themselves in one place.
A Study on the Place Attachment Differences of Residents in Tourism Destination: Take Gulangyu Island as an Example
ZENG Qi-hong,YUAN Shu-ai
Journal of Chongqing Normal University , 2011,
Abstract: Place attachment is a long time research topic in tourism geography. However, when Chinese people do tourism planning and manage the destination, most of them also pay attention to the management of real enviroment or recreation faclilities. Few people study the place attachment relationship between the resident and the destination. This study takes Gulangyu as an example. By a large number of questionnaires, using relevant statistical software and methematical analysis, the paper analyzes the relationship between place attachment and the background, ways of tourism and frequency of visitation of local residents, the result shows that such as gender, cultural level, living time, occupation and whether the local people have an impact on the place attachment of residents. However, such as age and activities have no impact on the place attachment of residents, some differences of residents' place attachment are found. On the basis of the study, the paper analyzes the residents cluster basing on the difference of place attachment. Four types of resident are identified:"the daily life", "the emotion approval", "the sparsely leaving" and "the vital function".
The construction of biodiversity as a political and scientific problem
Drawing on an on-going survey, we examine the construction of biodiversity as a public problem, in the field of both science and policy and, more precisely, as a problem of interface between science and policy. In the first part, we give an overview of the process, from the invention of the term of biodiversity in the mid 1980s to the very recent decision (June 2010) to create a structure responsible for the global governance of biodiversity, the International Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (Ipbes). We suggest to divide this process into three stages and underline the role of scientists in it. The second part deals with the relations between the researchers’ participation in defining biodiversity as a public problem and the transformations of their professional practices and identities. We show that the development of biodiversity studies goes along with the modernisation of natural sciences, the rise of a discourse about environmental urgency and increasing relations with the economic and financial world.

Citizen sciences are undergoing strong growth, a fact demonstrated by the session devoted to the topic at the 3rd French-language meetings on conservation biology (Le reveil du dodo III, 17-19 March 2009 in Montpellier) and the seminar titled Citizen science and biodiversity, held in Montpellier on 22-23 October 2009.Marion and Frédéric Gosselin, engineer and researcher at Cemagref in Nogent-sur-Vernisson discuss the topic here with Romain Julliard, researcher at the Bird-ringing research centre of the National museum of natural history (MNHN) and who has managed a number of Vigie-Nature programmes requiring public participation (naturalists and amateurs) to collect the necessary data. The discussion successively addresses the history of citizen sciences, their advantages and limits, focussing on the assessment of biodiversity-conservation policies.
