Synthesis of a Pyrene-Derived Schiff Base and Its Selective Fluorescent Enhancement by Zinc and Aluminum Ions  [PDF]

Abstract: An efficient pyrene-Schiff base fluorescent sensor PySb was synthesized and evaluated for its fluorescence response to metal ions. Sensor PySb exhibits an “off-on-type” mode with high selectivity to Zn2+ and Al3+ in ethanol (470 nm) and in dimethyl sulfoxide (458 nm) respectively. The originally non-fluorescent PySb, due to photo-induced electron transfer (PET) from imine moiety, is turned on after binding with the cations. The stoichiometric ratio between PySb and Zn2+ is 1:2; moreover, the limit of detection (LOD) and bonding constant were 2.39 × 10-8 M and 2 × 109 M-1 respectively, as obtained from titration experiments.

Abstract: Inserting a hole-buffer layer is an effective way to enhance emission efficiency of electroluminescence devices. We have successfully synthesized a new hole-buffer material PSB composed of pyrene, Schiff base and trihydroxy tert-butyl groups by the Suzuki-coupling reaction. The HOMO and LUMO lev-els were -6.33 eV and -2.55 eV, respectively, as estimated from cyclic volt-ammograms. In addition, homogeneous films (rms roughness ~2 nm) were readily obtained by spin-coating process. Multilayer polymer light-emitting diodes, ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PSB/SY/LiF/Al, have been fabricated using PSB as hole-buffer layer (HBL). Inserting PSB as HBL significantly enhances the per-formance (maximum luminance: 26,439 cd/m2, maximum current efficiency: 7.03 cd/A), compared with the one without PSB (9802 cd/m2, 2.43 cd/A). It is also superior to the device with conventional BCP as hole-blocking layer (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/SY/BCP/LiF/Al: 15,496 cd/m2, 5.56 cd/A). Current results strongly indicate that the PSB is a potential hole-buffer material for electrolu-minescent devices.
Joint Brain Parametric -Map Segmentation and RF Inhomogeneity Calibration

Abstract: We propose a constrained version of Mumford and Shah's (1989) segmentation model with an information-theoretic point of view in order to devise a systematic procedure to segment brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data for parametric T1-Map and T1-weighted images, in both 2-D and 3D settings. Incorporation of a tuning weight in particular adds a probabilistic flavor to our segmentation method, and makes the 3-tissue segmentation possible. Moreover, we proposed a novel method to jointly segment the T1-Map and calibrate RF Inhomogeneity (JSRIC). This method assumes the average T1 value of white matter is the same across transverse slices in the central brain region, and JSRIC is able to rectify the flip angles to generate calibrated T1-Maps. In order to generate an accurate T1-Map, the determination of optimal flip-angles and the registration of flip-angle images are examined. Our JSRIC method is validated on two human subjects in the 2D T1-Map modality and our segmentation method is validated by two public databases, BrainWeb and IBSR, of T1-weighted modality in the 3D setting.

Abstract: This work presents the molecular dynamics approach toward mechanical deformation and phase transformation mechanisms of monocrystalline Si(100) subjected to nanoindentation. We demonstrate phase distributions during loading and unloading stages of both spherical and Berkovich nanoindentations. By searching the presence of the fifth neighboring atom within a non-bonding length, Si-III and Si-XII have been successfully distinguished from Si-I. Crystallinity of this mixed-phase was further identified by radial distribution functions.
Surface Morphological and Nanomechanical Properties of PLD-Derived ZnO Thin Films

Abstract: This study reports the surface roughness and nanomechanical characteristics of ZnO thin films deposited on the various substrates, obtained by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation and nanoscratch techniques. ZnO thin films are deposited on (a- and c-axis) sapphires and (0001) 6H-SiC substrates by using the pulsed-laser depositions (PLD) system. Continuous stiffness measurements (CSM) technique is used in the nanoindentation tests to determine the hardness and Young’s modulus of ZnO thin films. The importance of the ratio (H/Efilm) of elastic to plastic deformation during nanoindentation of ZnO thin films on their behaviors in contact-induced damage during fabrication of ZnO-based devices is considered. In addition, the friction coefficient of ZnO thin films is also presented here.
Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess in diabetic patients: association of glycemic control with the clinical characteristics

Abstract: Background Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess (KPLA) has been reported with increasing frequency in East Asian countries in the past 3 decades, especially in Taiwan and Korea. Diabetes is a well-known risk factor for KPLA and highly associated with septic metastatic complications from KPLA. We investigated the association of glycemic control in diabetic patients with the clinical characteristics of KPLA in Taiwan. Methods Adult diabetic patients with KPLA were identified retrospectively in a medical center from January 2007 to January 2012. Clinical characteristics were compared among patients with different levels of current hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Risk factors for metastatic infection from KPLA were analyzed. Results Patients with uncontrolled glycemia (HbA1c ≥ 7%) were significantly younger than those with controlled glycemia (HbA1c < 7%). Patients with uncontrolled glycemia had the trend to have a higher rate of gas-forming liver abscess, cryptogenic liver abscess, and metastatic infection than those with controlled glycemia. Cryptogenic liver abscess and metastatic infection were more common in the poor glycemic control group (HbA1c value >; 10%) after adjustment with age. HbA1c level and abscess < 5 cm were independent risk factors for metastatic complications from KPLA. Conclusions Glycemic control in diabetic patients played an essential role in the clinical characteristics of KPLA, especially in metastatic complications from KPLA.
Adsorption and Reduction of Cr(VI) in Aqueous Solution Using Steel Slag Particles

Abstract: 以钢渣颗粒为水处理剂,分析了其组成和结构,研究了钢渣颗粒直接吸附去除水中Cr(VI)的工艺过程及机理.结果表明,钢渣颗粒在适当的粒度与用量下,经10min搅拌处理,水中Cr(VI)浓度由200mg/L降低到0.5mg/L,达到污水综合排放标准(GB8978-1996)的要求.钢渣颗粒对水中Cr(VI)的吸附符合Langmuir等温吸附过程,对Cr(VI)的饱和吸附量达6.878mg/g.化学分析和XPS分析均表明,钢渣颗粒对水中Cr(VI)具有吸附与还原的联合作用,吸附后钢渣颗粒中Cr(III)含量由0.0985%提高到0.39%,而FeO含量由9.20%下降到8.35%.吸附后钢渣颗粒表面形成了Cr(OH)3,说明钢渣颗粒中FeO充当了还原剂,将水中Cr(VI)吸附于钢渣颗粒表面并还原成了低毒的Cr(OH)3随钢渣颗粒沉降直接从水中去除.

Abstract: 研究了满足用户在服务功能、服务属性和服务质量上的多层次均衡需求的Web服务资源智能推荐方法,解决了服务信息过载问题。现有服务推荐技术存在未考虑用户对服务多层次均衡需求的不足,结合Web服务资源的特点,综合考虑用户服务需求与候选服务群之间的多层次相似度,设计了综合Web服务资源的功能、属性和质量三个层次的适合度匹配算法,以及用户主观兴趣度匹配算法。通过这两个算法建立了面向用户均衡需求的个性化Web服务资源智能推荐方法,能将最大匹配度的Web服务资源推荐给目标用户。
Seven kinds of new SCCmec type in Methicillin-resistant Staphyloccus aureus and their susceptibility to the antibiotics

Abstract: In order to explore the resistance and the staphylococcal chromosome cassette mec (SCCmec) types of Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in the area of Haikou, 686 strains of MRSA had been distinguished from 1174 strains of S. aureus using PBP2a testing. The resistance to the seven deputies of seven kinds antibiotics which in common use in clinic, including Oxacillin, Vancomycin,Doxycyclin, Amikacin, Erythromycin, Chloramphenicol,Ciprofloxacin, and SCCmec type of 58 strains had been tested using the K-B Agar diffuse,E-test and multiplex PCR strategy, and seven kinds of new SCCmec types were found in 17 strains. Their specialties of structure are: type-new3 possess four loci of A,F,H,M; New4 possess three loci of F,H,M; New5 possess three loci of D,B,M; New6 possess three loci of A,B,M; New7 possess four loci of H,E,C,M; New8 possess two loci of A,M; New9 possess three loci of A,C,M. All of them are different from the types reported. The strains carrying new SCCmec types are different from that carrying old SCCmec types in the epidemical distribution and resistance to the antibiotics: they were mostly isolated from the out-patients and have high level and wider range of resistance to antibiotics and deserve to pay more attention.
