An Improved SPIHT Algorithm for Image Compression in Low Bit Rate  [PDF]

Abstract: Aiming at shortage of the SPIHT algorithm, an improved image compression algorithm is proposed, in order to overcome the shortcomings of decoding image quality and coding time, LS9/7 lifting wavelet transform is adopted. According to the characteristics of the human visual system (HVS), the scanning mode and the method to determine the threshold of algorithm are changed to improve the quality of reconstruction image. On the question of repeating scan of SPIHT algorithm, using maximum list thought, greatly reduce the computation and save operating time. The experimental results have proved that the improved algorithm of image decoding time and the quality of reconstruction images are better than the original algorithm , especially in the case of low bit rate.

Abstract:

Forrest Carter’s The Education of Little Tree (ELT) was published as a memoir in 1976. Carter died in 1979, but his book gained in popularity, to win the American Booksellers Association Book of the Year award in 1991 and became a national best seller. The book explores the significance of nature and animals in a traditional Native American worldview, even as it espouses ecological consciousness via the education of Little Tree by his Cherokee grandparents. The Education of Little Tree has much to offer in its presentation of a Native American philosophy of life that includes caring for the earth and its creatures as well as other people, regardless of their skin color or ethnicity. This article aims to examine the ecological values portrayed by the traditional Cherokee way of life as presented in The Education of Little Tree.

An Analysis of Factors Influencing the Self-Rated Health of Elderly Chinese People  [PDF]

Abstract:

This study used the data from the Chinese Urban and Rural Elderly Population Survey to analyze the correlations among the self-rated health of elderly Chinese people, demographic factors and chronic diseases. The results revealed that in comparing younger elderly individuals vs older elderly individuals, the urban elderly vs rural elderly, elderly man vs elderly women, and the elderly with fewer chronic diseases vs the elderly with more chronic diseases, the former’s self-rated health tended to be good, while the latter tended to be bad. In addition, over time, elderly individuals’ self-rated health tended to improve. This paper further studied high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, neck and lumbar disease, and chronic bronchitis and the impact of these five common chronic diseases on self-rated health. The results showed that, among these five types of chronic diseases, the impacts of heart disease and chronic bronchitis were greater than those of the other three chronic diseases.?

Power Law for the Rates of Different Numbers of Chronic Diseases among Elderly Chinese People  [PDF]

Abstract: Chronic disease is an important factor that affect the health of elderly people. We analyzed the 2006 and 2010 data from the Chinese Urban and Rural Elderly Population Surveys, which are nationally representative surveys of elderly people aged 60 years and above. We found that there existed a typical power-law distribution for the rates of different numbers of chronic diseases among elderly Chinese people. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicated that the result was robust, and the power exponents were approximately ?2.5. In addition, a paired t-test was conducted, which demonstrated that the rates of different numbers of chronic diseases did not have significant urban-rural differences, time differences or gender differences.

Abstract: Higher vocational education is a mode of modern education, which can serve regional economy. Higher vocational colleges in Hubei have played a positive role in the service of economic and social development in the region, but from the point of higher vocational colleges themselves, there also exist problems as follows: some higher vocational colleges are unable to meet the diverse needs of talents because of the so-called popular majors; specialties setting of higher vocational colleges lack forward-looking, which is out of touch with the needs of the society; some higher vocational colleges cannot serve the society well; technology research and development of higher vocational colleges cannot satisfy social demand; talented teachers are not enough in higher vocational colleges. Our paper proposes that Hubei higher vocational colleges should take measures as follows: first, we should establish the education view of running the school open to cultivate applied talents to serve the development of regional economy and we should establish the programs according to the regional industry posts; second, we should make full use of teachers to provide consulting service for local government and enterprises; third, we should make use of resources to provide training and service for the society and expand the social service sphere; finally, we should make the occupation education concept merge into the regional members of society life.
Phenotypic Characterization, Genetic Analysis and Molecular Mapping of a New Floral Organ Mutant Gene in Rice  [PDF]

Abstract: A rice floral organ mutant, srs2, derived from a spontaneous mutation, was first discovered in a japonica rice variety GNZ. The mutant displayed various abnormalities in floral organ including longer paleas/lemmas, split spikelets, palea/lemma-like lodicules, two florets of the same rachilla, a decrease in stamen number, and an increase in pistil number. Moreover, the seed-setting rate of the mutant was also reduced to 9.8%. Observations of the floral organ morphogenesis by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in the mutant indicated that the development of androecium and gynoecia was abnormal and an additional floret and several palea/lemma-like lodicules were usually formed by the irregular development of the floral meristem. Genetic analysis of 4 F2 and 2 BC1F1 populations showed that the mutation was controlled by a single recessive gene, and designated as srs2 (spit rice spikelet 2). Screening of 643 F2 mutant individuals derived from the cross of srs2 × 202R with simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers demonstrated that SRS2 is located between the molecular marker S31 and L75, at a distances of 0.07 and 2 cM, respectively, on chromosome 3. The SRS2 gene was also discussed to be a new floral organ identity gene in rice.

Abstract: Financial discipline has two branches, macro-finance and micro-finance. Compared with the micro-finance, macro-finance theory is featured by stronger comprehensiveness, which increases teaching difficulties. With the development of macro-economic, financial theories continuously innovate and students’ knowledge structure plays a more important role in teaching. By integrating the courses, a knowledge chain can be formed, which makes it easier for students to solve financial problems. Meanwhile, this paper proposes a series of methods to improve the teaching effect, including inheritance and innovation of traditional lecture, case analysis assisted by videos, spot investigation, positive scene simulation and knowledge structure graph. In addition, strengthening review lessons and the application of MOOC is advisably.
Application of systems biology method in the research of traditional Chinese medicine

Abstract: : Systems biology is a new science of the 21st century, which resembles traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in many aspects such as study method and design. Adoption of systems biology approach would do much help for exploring the scientific connotation of TCM syndrome and the modernization of Chinese herbal medicine. Its technological platforms, such as genomics, proteomics and metabonomics, provide powerful tools for the study of the essence of TCM syndrome and the function of herbal compound recipe. Compared with other molecular biological methods, such as genomics and proteomics, metabonomics method is more direct and more concise, especially for providing an effective method for the study of TCM therapy in preventing and treating kidney diseases.
Science Information Literacy Tutorials and Pedagogy

Abstract: Objective – This study examined information literacy tutorials in science. The goals of the research were to identify which of the information literacy standards for science, engineering and technology were addressed in the tutorials, and the extent that the tutorials incorporated good pedagogical elements. Methods – The researcher chose for review 31 of the tutorials selected by members of the ACRL Science & Technology Section (STS) Information Literacy Committee. She carefully analyzed the tutorials and developed a database with codes for the topic of each tutorial, the STS information literacy standard(s) addressed by the tutorial, and whether good pedagogical elements were incorporated. The entire analysis and coding procedure was repeated three times to ensure consistency. Results – The tutorials analyzed in this study covered various subjects and addressed all the (STS) information literacy standards. The tutorials presented information clearly and allowed users to select their own learning paths. The incorporation of good pedagogical elements was limited, especially in relation to active learning elements. Conclusions – Web tutorials have been accepted as effective information literacy instruction tools and have been used to teach all elements of the STS information literacy standards. Yet, ensuring they provide a real learning experience for students remains a challenge. More serious thought needs to be given to integrating good pedagogy into these instructional tools in order to attain deep learning.
Chern numbers and the indices of some elliptic differential operators

Abstract: Libgober and Wood proved that the Chern number $c_{1}c_{n-1}$ of a $n$-dimensional compact complex manifold can be determined by its Hirzebruch $\chi_{y}$-genus. Inspired by the idea of their proof, we show that, for compact, spin, almost-complex manifolds, more Chern numbers can be determined by the indices of some twisted Dirac and signature operators. As a byproduct, we get a divisibility result of certain characteristic number for such manifolds. Using our method, we give a direct proof of Libgober-Wood's result, which was originally proved by induction.
