Effects of a Task-Based Approach to Non-English-Majored Graduates’ Oral English Performance  [PDF]

Abstract: The present study investigated the effects of task-based language teaching (TBLT) and learning on non-English-majored graduates’ oral performance through two tasks in a comparative way. There were 65 first-year non-English-majored graduates from Yangtze University participated in this study. In this study, the experimental group was treated under the task-based language teaching (TBLT) instruction and the control group received the treatment of 3Ps instruction through one semester. At the end of the semester, two tasks were used to elicit the participants’ performance. By comparing the experimental effects of task-based language teaching (TBLT) on non-English- majored graduates’ oral performance of accuracy, fluency and complexity with that of 3Ps instruction, results in this study showed that 1) under the task-based language teaching (TBLT) instruction, there was greater accuracy for non-English-majored graduates in oral English performance; 2) under the task-based language teaching (TBLT) conditions, there was greater fluency (fewer repetitions, fewer pauses) in oral English performance; 3) under the task-based language teaching (TBLT) instruction, there was greater complexity (a greater number of words per AS-unit.) in oral English performance. The author drew a conclusion that TBLT methodology was superior to that of 3Ps.
Heavy Quarks on Anisotropic Lattices: The Charmonium Spectrum

Abstract: We present results for the mass spectrum of $c{\bar c}$ mesons simulated on anisotropic lattices where the temporal spacing $a_t$ is only half of the spatial spacing $a_s$. The lattice QCD action is the Wilson gauge action plus the clover-improved Wilson fermion action. The two clover coefficients on an anisotropic lattice are estimated using mean links in Landau gauge. The bare velocity of light $\nu_t$ has been tuned to keep the anisotropic, heavy-quark Wilson action relativistic. Local meson operators and three box sources are used in obtaining clear statistics for the lowest lying and first excited charmonium states of $^1S_0$, $^3S_1$, $^1P_1$, $^3P_0$ and $^3P_1$. The continuum limit is discussed by extrapolating from quenched simulations at four lattice spacings in the range 0.1 - 0.3 fm. Results are compared with the observed values in nature and other lattice approaches. Finite volume effects and dispersion relations are checked.
A Research on Quality Assurance in Arts Classroom Teaching in Higher Education in China  [PDF]

Abstract: Classroom teaching is one of the most important aspects and links to assure quality in higher education. Although there have been some theoretical discussions and research by Chinese scholars about how to enhance the quality of classroom teaching in higher education, the experimental research of quality assurance in teaching is rarely seen. Based on an exploration of the teaching-learning methods of the presentation model, this article will provide evidence that interactive teaching styles, especially Presentation Teaching Methods, are very efficient in improving the quality of arts classroom teaching in higher education. It will analyze the quality and quantity of the empirical knowledge, which includes consciously challenging authority, academic research competencies of critical reading, critical writing and some practical abilities in finding, analyzing, solving problems and team work. Finally, it will provide some suggestions for quality assurance in classroom teaching in higher education.
Spatial Distribution of Cytoskeletal Mechanical Properties in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells  [PDF]

Abstract: The mechanical properties on a whole basis of cell are extensively studied whereas regional mechanical properties of the cytoskeleton (CSK) have not been characterized. To fill this gap, here we provide detailed intracellular maps of regional CSK stiffness and traction forces, as well as the structural rearrangement in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). We used micropatterning to restrict VSMC to a single island. Regional cell stiffness was measured with optical magnetic twisting cytometry and traction force microscopy was used to measure regional traction forces. Finally, we used F-actin staining to measure the regional F-actin distribution. From traction and cell height data we computed the prestress within a cell using finite element methods. Compared with the cell center, cell edges were systematically stiffer, more fluid-like and supported higher traction forces, and at the same time had slower remodeling dynamics. These findings provide the most detailed characterization to date concerning regional mechanical properties of the intact cytoskeleton.
Investigating the English Proficiency of Learners: A Corpus-Based Study of Contrastive Discourse Markers in China  [PDF]

Abstract: Discourse markers signal the relationship between the neighboring sentences. The present comparative study investigates the use of Contrastive Discourse Markers between Chinese English learners and native speakers based on corpus data. Special attention is allocated to but and however, since these two small words are the most popular discourse markers in Chinese English Learners and Native Speakers. Quantitative and qualitative analyses indicate that both groups prefer to employ discourse markers like but, although, (even) though, however, etc. when signaling a contrastive relationship between S1 and S2, though they have different priorities in different contextual situation; besides, but is overused significantly by Chinese English Learners to signal a contrastive relationship rather than add further information in context; lastly, Chinese English Learner usually employs however at the beginning of the sentence, while native speakers put it both at the beginning or middle of the sentences, which both signal the relationship between topics and messages. The findings also suggest that more detailed instructions should be delivered on the procedural meanings and syntactical positions of Contrastive Discourse Markers used in context.
HSP47 Deletion Inhibits TGF-β1 Stimulation on Proliferation and Collagen Synthesis of Human Tenon Fibroblasts  [PDF]

Abstract: Heat shock protein 47 (HSP47) is a collagen-specific molecular chaperone that is required for mo-lecular maturation of various types of collagens. Many studies have shown a close association be-tween increased expression of HSP47 and excessive accumulation of collagens in scar tissues of various human fibrotic diseases. However, the role of HSP47 in formation of scar after glaucoma filtration surgery is still unclear. In this study, we deleted the expression of HSP47 in human tent on fibroblasts (HTFs) by virus infection, and then the proliferation and collagen synthesis were compared between HSP47 deletion cells and control upon TGF-β1 stimulation. Our data showed that HSP47 deletion could significantly inhibit the proliferation and collagen synthesis of HTFs upon TGF-β1 stimulation, HSP47 gene suppression might be a novel method to against the formation of scar after glaucoma surgery.
The Relationship between 2D Positioning Ability and Realistic Drawing Skill  [PDF]

Abstract: Realistic drawing ability is a fundamental human trait. However, the cognitive constituents of this ability are poorly understood. This study aims to evaluate the contribution of Two-dimensional (2D) positioning skills in the performance of realistic drawing. 2D positioning refers to an important observation technique employed by artists to locate the correct position of an object in its representation on a blank canvas. Two different types of 2D positioning techniques are considered: absolute positioning (using the canvas boundaries as positioning reference) and relative positioning (using already-drawn components as reference). We used a line-arrangement experimental task to evaluate the positioning abilities of experts and novices; we further measured their realistic drawing ability in a realistic drawing task. Pearson correlation-coefficient analysis showed that both positioning abilities are positively correlated with realistic drawing abilities, but that the two positioning abilities are not correlated. While expert participants were found to be significantly better at absolute positioning than the novice, their relative positioning performance does not differ from that of the novice. These results suggest that absolute and relative positioning are two independent observation techniques, and that experience might improve absolute positioning skills. This implies that absolute positioning is a more advanced technique requiring both training and practice.
G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor Is a Critical Regulator in Metastasis of Breast Cancer Cells  [PDF]

Abstract: Estrogen signaling via GPER in breast cancers has been intensively discussed over years, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains to be fully elucidated, especially for the transcriptional profiles of the GPER under estrogen stimulation. In this study, we evaluated the potential role GPER in regulating invasion of metastatic breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 via transcriptional way. First, with primary breast cancer tissue samples, we found that the expression of GPER significantly coordinated with another membrane receptor-CXCR1. Besides, the expression level of these two proteins was associated with the development of the primary breast cancers. Second, to dissect the cross talk between GPER and CXCR1, we further our studies to detect the activation of ERK, Akt and transcriptional factor NF-kB. We found that upon estrogen stimulation, the phosphorylation level of ERK and Akt were rapidly increased and then resulted in the activation and nucleus translocation of NF-kB. When we considered the sub-sequence of the NF-kB activation, we found the autocrine of IL-8 was boosted by stimulation of the estrogen and followed by the promoted invasion of the MDA-MB-231 cells. In conclusion, our data demonstrated the estrogen-mediated GPER stimulation would regulate the invasive activities of metastatic breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 coupled with another membrane receptor CXCR1 via transcriptional pathway, the cross talk between GPER and CXCR1 may be another target for breast cancer therapies.

Abstract: A kind of heap sorting method based on array sorting was proposed. Some advantages and disadvantages of it were discussed. It was compared with the traditional method of direct application. In the method, the ordered keywords in the array are put into the heap one by one after building an empty heap. This method needs relatively less space and is fit for ordered sequence.
