Alcohol Consumption Is Associated with Hypogonadism and Decreased Sexual Function in Ghanaian Diabetics  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: Alcohol usage has largely been seen as a risk factor for the development of sexual dysfunction as well as erectile dysfunction. Others have reported that prolonged alcohol usage and abuse is compatible with normal sexual function in the absence of endocrinological problems as well as hepatic dysfunction. About seventy five (75) percent of alcoholics have various sexual difficulties with improvements in sexual functions occurring after treatment of alcoholism and psychosexual therapy. It is evident from the various reports over the years that mild and occasional alcohol usage is not as much implicated in the causation of SD and its other forms as heavy, addictive or dependent alcohol usage. Alcohol usage has also long been linked to hypogonadism, testicular atrophy as well as leydig cell toxicity. Alcohol induced hypogonadism has been reported to resolve after withdrawal of alcohol use. Since both diabetes and alcohol usage have been strongly associated with both hypogonadism and sexual dysfunction, it is logical to expect that diabetics who frequently consume alcohol will have a worsened hypogonadal state and sexual function. This research therefore seeks to provide evidence of an association between alcohol consumption in diabetics and a worsened sexual dysfunction in comparison to diabetics who did not consume alcohol. Methods: Type II diabetic patients attending the Diabetic Clinic at the Maamobi General Hospital between the periods of January 2010 and March 2011 were consecutively recruited for this study. Diabetics with other known endocrinological diseases and physical disabilities were excluded from the study. Sexual function was assessed using the GRISS-M. Early morning fasting samples were used in lipid and testosterone profile assays. Results: Study participants who consumed alcohol recorded higher levels of triglycerides and LDL-Cholesterol. They also recorded significantly lower levels of bioavailable testosterone. Furthermore they also recorded higher scores for impotence, premature ejaculation, non-sensuality and infrequency but lower scores for avoidance and were about six times more likely to be infrequent in their sexual activity in comparison with those who did not consume alcohol. Conclusion: Alcohol consumption among diabetic males is associated with hypogonadism and has an impact on several domains of male sexual function. On the Ellipsoid and Plane Intersection Equation  [PDF]

Abstract: It is well known that the line of intersection of an ellipsoid and a plane is an ellipse. In this note simple formulas for the semi-axes and the center of the ellipse are given, involving only the semi-axes of the ellipsoid, the componentes of the unit normal vector of the plane and the distance of the plane from the center of coordinates. This topic is relatively common to study, but, as indicated in [1], a closed form solution to the general problem is actually very difficult to derive. This is attemped here. As applications problems are treated, which were posed in the internet [1,2], pertaining to satellite orbits in space and to planning radio-therapy treatment of eyes.
On the Intersection Equation of a Hyperboloid and a Plane  [PDF]

In this note, the ideas employed in [1] to treat the problem of an ellipsoid intersected by a plane are applied to the analogous problem of a hyperboloid being intersected by a plane. The curves of intersection resulting in this case are not only ellipses but rather all types of conics: ellipses, hyperbolas and parabolas. In text books of mathematics usually only cases are treated, where the planes of intersection are parallel to the coordinate planes. Here the general case is illustrated with intersecting planes which are not necessarily parallel to the coordinate planes.

The Perceptions of High School Honor Students on the Academic Skills Needed to Succeed in College Science Classes

Abstract: High school honor graduates at a rural high school in the Southeastern United States of America have not been as prepared for college science classes. At the research site, which is located in one rural high school, honor graduates have been experiencing difficulties with their freshman college science classes although these students were honors students in their high school science classes. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of high school honor students on the academic skills needed to succeed in college science classes. This qualitative case study was grounded in the brain-based theory of Caine and Caine. Twenty high school honor students participated in semi-structured face-to-face interviews and one theme emerged from the interview transcripts. The findings revealed that the most important academic skills for success in college science classes were problem solving, critical thinking, and how to study effectively skills. The implications of these findings for high school honor students are that the focus of the high school curricula should on the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and study skills.

Abstract: Medicinal plants, herbs, spices and herbal remedies are integral components of alternative system of medicine since times immemorial. Stylosanthes fruticosa. is a potential folklore medicinal plant (Fabacea) used for Aurveda and Siddha systems of medicine. In this study Alkaloid, Carbohydrate and Glycoside, Saponin, Protein & Amino acid, Phenolic compounds & Flavonoids and Phytosterols were identified as the major phytochemical constituents in the ethanol fractions of Stylosanthes fruticosa leaf extract. Their structures were elucidated, on the basis of GC-MS data . (2R,3R)-4-methyl-2,3-epoxypentan-1-ol(9.26%),1-Cyclohexyl-2,2-difluoro-4-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-4-iodobutanone(9.26%),9-(Tetrahydropyran-2''-yl)-6-[2'-phenyl-',4',5',6''-tetrapropylphenyl]-9H-purine(9.26%) these different active phytochemicals have been found to possess a wide range of activities. In conclusion Stylosanthes fruticosa contains biologically active compounds that may serve as candidate for the discovery of new drugs in the treatment of antimicrobial activities.
Universal and Generalized Cartan Calculus on Hopf Algebras

Abstract: We extend the universal differential calculus on an arbitrary Hopf algebra to a ``universal Cartan calculus''. This is accomplished by introducing inner derivations and Lie derivatives which act on the elements of the universal differential envelope. A new algebra is formulated by incorporating these new objects into the universal differential calculus together with consistent commutation relations. We also explain how to include nontrivial commutation relations into this formulation to obtain the ``generalized Cartan calculus''.
Complex scaling approach to the decay of Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract: The mean-field dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied in presence of a microscopic trapping potential from which the condensate can escape via tunneling through finite barriers. We show that the method of complex scaling can be used to obtain a quantitative description of this decay process. A real-time propagation approach that is applied to the complex-scaled Gross-Pitaevskii equation allows us to calculate the chemical potentials and lifetimes of the metastably trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. The method is applied to a one-dimensional harmonic confinement potential combined with a Gaussian envelope, for which we compute the lowest symmetric and antisymmetric quasibound states of the condensate. A comparison with alternative approaches using absorbing boundary conditions as well as complex absorbing potentials shows good agreement.
