Little weed: Arabidopsis genomic and related data
Penny Webb
Genome Biology , 2001, DOI: 10.1186/gb-2001-2-9-reports2010
Abstract: The homepage consists of a list of categories followed by headings for the contents of each page, which makes it easy to select the page required. It is not as pretty as the old homepage, but is more functional for quick access. Navigation menus and search boxes are at the top of the main pages but do not appear on many of the results pages. The last update for the website was 17 July 2001. The site is updated regularly with a 'breaking news' feature on the several categories on the home page.Gene Hunter searches nine different sites for relevant information about a gene. If you select your search term carefully, Gene Hunter retrieves the available information from all sites despite each of the site's idiosyncrasies regarding search-term nomenclature. If you click a link to MapViewer from the Genetic Marker Object databox, or vice versa, when both frames are already open the content of the frame is updated but the window you have selected confusingly stays in the background. It would useful to have the sequence map resolved and accessible down to nucleotide level with features marked.Other Arabidopsis genome resources include the TIGR Arabidopsis thaliana Database, Department of Plant Gene Research at the Kazusa DNA Research Institute, the MIPS Arabidopsis thaliana Database (MATDB) and the Database of Arabidopsis thaliana Annotation (DAtA).The Arabidopsis Information ResourceTIGR Arabidopsis thaliana DatabaseDepartment of Plant Gene ResearchMIPS Arabidopsis thaliana Database (MATDB)Database of Arabidopsis thaliana Annotation (DAtA)

Education, equality and difference
Penny Enslin
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 1994, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v59i2.669
Abstract: Does the pursuit of equality in post-apartheid education require the removal of difference? This article examines the concepts of difference and equality by exploring two contemporary texts in political philosophy. It is argued that the pursuit of equality can and should, under certain circumstances, accommodate difference in the form of decentralisation and private schools.
Report on the SALEX '97 Lexicographical Training Course, Grahamstown, 15-27 September 1997
Penny Silva
Lexikos , 2012, DOI: 10.5788/8-1-959
Abstract: The report describes the background to the SALEX '97 Lexicographical Training Course, and the reasons for its conception. It explains the constraints within which the course had to be designed, and lists its practical and theoretical aims. The financing of the course, the range of participants attending, the structure of the working day, and the course materials provided to participants are described. The report ends with excerpts from evaluations provided by participants, and with a reference to the second planned training course, SALEX '98. The simple initial framework upon which the course was based is provided as an Appendix.
Charles Darwin as a theoretical biologist in the mechanistic tradition
David Penny
Trends in Evolutionary Biology , 2009, DOI: 10.4081/eb.2009.e1
Abstract: Charles Darwin has had more impact on biological sciences, and society generally, than any other 19th century biologist. Yet his modus operandi as a scientist is poorly known by evolutionists, and often seriously misinterpreted. Two important aspects of his reasoning discussed here are his hypothetico-deductive approach and his search for mechanisms to explain past events. A wide range of statements from his autobiography and letters show that he worked explicitly in the hypothetico-deductive model. The extracts include strong statements that theories were essential even to know what data to collect; to hold theories only as hypotheses; the necessity to search for data that contradict a cherished theory. He also built on the very mechanistic geological tradition of James Hutton and Charles Lyell, and thus brought into historical biology the search for mechanisms that could be studied in the present to explain events in the past. Taken together, the statements show an excellent scientist working effectively on conceptual issues, whilst searching for mechanisms that could be studied in the present and that would have operated in the past. In retrospect, our understanding has been hampered by forcing overly-simplistic binary choices, such as uniformitarianism and catastrophism. It is important, especially in teaching and interactions with the public, that Darwin’s mode of working is better known, and we need to be more proactive in getting across the message that evolution is good testable science.

Brothels and Disorderly Acts (2007) Vol 1 Art 2
Penny Crofts
Public Space : the Journal of Law and Social Justice , 2007,
Abstract: Although brothels have been able to operate as legal businesses for more than a decade, they continue to be treated more restrictively than businesses with similar amenity impacts. This paper explores the idea that this restrictive treatment can be explained by the continued perception of brothels as disorderly, as 'matter out of place'. This is due in part to the historical association of brothels with disorder in terms of cleanliness, morality and the law. These historical associations have been maintained and reflected in the current regulation of the sex industry, generating fears of pollution and contamination on the strength of its disorderliness.
