A Modified Method for the Accurate Determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in High Chloride Oilfield Wastewater  [PDF]

Abstract: In this work, in order to find a method for the accurate determination of chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) in high chloride oilfield wastewater, the interferences of chloridion (Cl-) on CODCr determination were first studied based on the Chinese national standard GB 11914-89. The results showed that the CODCr values and deviations determined by the classical potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) method increased gradually with the increase of Cl- mass concentration in water samples. Then, theoretical and experimental studies on reducing interferences of Cl- on CODCr determination were carried out. The results showed that different concentrations of K2Cr2O7 exhibited different oxidation capacities on Cl-, while having little effects on the oxidation of organic compounds. More specifically, when the concentration of K2Cr2O7 was 0.025 mol·L-1 and the mass ratio of HgSO4:Cl- was 10:1, the interferences of Cl- on CODCr determination were the slightest. Finally, a low concentration oxidant method was proposed for the accurate determination of CODCr in high chloride oilfield wastewaters. The performances of the proposed method were verified by the simulated and actual high chloride oilfield wastewater. The results showed that when Cl- ≤ 20,000 mg·L-1 and COD < 100 mg·L-1, the relative prediction errors of CODCr provided by the proposed method were acceptable, which revealed that the low concentration oxidant method is feasible and reliable for the determination of CODCr in high chloride oilfield wastewater.

Abstract: Aeolian sand sample from Tengger desert, located in the southern part of Inner Mongolia (China) was characterized for major elemental composition and mineralogy by EPMA, XRF and XRD methods. The objective of this research was to provide data which would be a guide to aid future beneficiation of this sand, especially for the economic exploitation of feldspar and quartz which have a wide range of applications in various industries like plastic, paint, ceramics and glass industries. The elemental analysis of the sample was carried out by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and chemical analysis while the minerals present were identified by an X-ray diffraction analyzer. The sand was discovered to contain basically SiO2 (82.43%), Al2O3 (7.68%), Na2O + K2O (4.37%) and TiO2 and Fe2O3 as the main impurities. It was also discovered that grinding of the sand is required to enhance the liberation of the minerals and the separation methods recommended are magnetic separation and flotation. It was therefore concluded that aeolian sand is a suitable source of quartz and feldspar for use in the industry.
Efficacy of Radiofrequency Hyperthermia Combined with Chemotherapy in Treatment of Malignant Pericardial Effusion Caused by Lung Cancer

Abstract: Background and objective Malignant pericardial effusion is one of the serious complications of lung cancer and lack effective treatment methods. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy for patients with malignant pericardial effusion caused by lung cancer. Methods Fifty-five patients with malignant pericardial effusion caused by lung cancer were divided into hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy group (combined therapy group) and chemotherapy group. The combined therapy group was treated with radiofrequency hyperthermia after the pericardiocentesis and intracavitary injection (cisplatin 20 mg and dexamethasone 5 mg), when patients’ general state of health improved, systemic chemotherapy was performed. The chemotherapy group was treated only with intracavitary injection and systemic chemotherapy. Intracavitary chemotherapy was performed for 1-6 times (average 3 times). Hyperthermia was performed twice per week with an average of 6 times following intracavitary and systemic chemotherapy. The temperature of intracavitary was 40.5 oC-41.5 oC for 60 min during the hyperthermia periods. Systemic chemotherapy consists of cisplatin (75 mg/m2) and vinorelbine (50 mg/m2). Results The complete remission rate (CR) of malignant pericardial effusion was 54.3% and the response rate (RR) was 91.4% in the combined therapy group, while the rates of CR and RR of chemotherapy group were 25.0% and 70.0%, and the differences of CR and RR between the two groups were significant (P<0.05). After treatment, the quality of life improved significantly in both groups, but the combined therapy group had a higher KPS score than in the chemotherapy group (P<0.05). The adverse events associated with the chemotherapy included gastrointestinal toxicity and myelosup-pression, and there were no significant differences between the two groups. The main side effects associated with radiofrequency hyperthermia included local skin ache (8.6%) and induration of subcutaneous fat (5.7%). Conclusion Radiofrequency hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy is effective in treatment of malignant pericardial effusion and can significantly improve the quality of life of patients without increasing the toxicity of chemotherapy, and side effects could be tolerable.

Abstract: In recent years, air crashes have occurred frequently, so the resulting compensation issues are extremely complex. Air crash compensation is mainly involved with the amount of compensation, application of law and jurisdiction, including domestic law and private international law. The provisions on it are different in different countries. How to protect the air crash victims’ rights effectively is always a difficult problem in the research of scholars of all countries.
