IoT Testbed Business Model  [PDF]
Edgar M. Silva, Pedro Maló
Advances in Internet of Things (AIT) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ait.2014.44006
Abstract: The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is today one of the hypes in the technological world but despite the enormous attention and research investment, the clear business value is still hard to perceive. IoT deployments are costly to be installed, managed and maintained, and need to provide a very clear value to justify the investments. For another viewpoint, IoT technologies need to be proven before deployment, which implies the need to test and assess IoT solutions in real settings and involve the actual target users. And as such, this presents an opportunity to have IoT deployments with a clear business model mainly focused on real-life large-scale research and technological experimentation. This would mean having a sustainable IoT infrastructure in-place based on the provision of experimentation services and a trial environment to industry and research, which then could also present an opportunity to establish added-value (business) services. This is the exact idea of the flagship SmartSantander testbed facility and especially its major deployment in the city of Santander, Spain. The SmartSantander facility business model is built around experimentally-driven research and technology development thus attracting many experimenters from industry and European research projects. This model makes it possible to sustain an outstanding large-scale IoT deployment of around 12,000 sensors and on top of it the development of new the development of new services and applications especially targeting the needs of users (citizens, businesses, authorities) in smart-cities. This paper studies the business model of outstanding SmartSantander facility in order to provide a generic Business Model for IoT testbeds that can provide guidance and be adapted by owners (or owners to-be) wishing to exploit their IoT deployments as facilities supporting experimentation and trials of IoT solutions.
Pedro Silva
Revista da Faculdade de Letras : Sociologia , 2010,
Abstract: In this paper I try to reflect about the overlapping of the problematics of school-family relationships and the sociological look about it. I try it through a double historical perspective (necessarily synthetical): a) about the emergence of that problematics, and b) about the emergence of its adoption by sociology. I build, further on, a corpus of Portuguese and foreign works, under book format, that include a contribution about that relationship that I consider to be pertinent, most of them of sociological nature. My analysis, in the second half of the paper, focus on the books that assume home-school relations as the object of study and that include, at the same time, a sociological analysis about it, paying special attention to the Portuguese literature
Associations of Parents, Interculturality and Sociological division: Some questions
Silva, Pedro
School and family represent two central social institutions in our societies. Family, to a certain extent, has always had this role. School, on the other hand, is still today a mirage for many (including children), when the planetary scale is considered. Thus, for almost a century, families and schools have received more attention from social sciences, giving origin to specialized subjects, such as family history and sociology, the history and sociology of education. The school-family interface took longer to become a subject of study, although excellent contributions which have analysed it have been studied over the last decades, especially in education science, and particularly sociology.
Perspectives on top quark physics after Run I of the LHC: sqrt(s)=13 TeV and beyond
Pedro Silva
Physics , 2014,
Abstract: A summary of the on-going preparations from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations to perform top quark physics in Run II of the LHC and at the HL-LHC is given. To maintain the current level of precision and profit from the high-luminosity scenario expected in the next runs of the LHC, several new reconstruction techniques and detector upgrades are foreseen. The prospects for precise measurements and possible discovery stories for new physics with top quarks are summarized.
Silva, Pedro Gabriel;
Ambiente & Sociedade , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-753X2010000100005

Silva, Nelson Pedro;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722004000200009
Abstract: we present results of a research whose purpose was to investigate the influence of the faithfulness to the pledged word among students. we have adopted the piagetian framework and the theory of values. we have used 186 informers of both sexes, from different ages and from unfavorable social and economical level. by means of six little stories, we have contrasted faithfulness to theft and lies. the results have indicated that age and interpersonal involvement do not interfere in judgments; there is a predominance of a view circumscribed to the male universe and another to the female universe and most of the students choose the ethics of justice. we believe that it has happened because the interviewees prioritized private values related to glory.
