Abstract:

The present study evaluates the performance of three numerical weather forecasting models: Global Forecast System (GFS), Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (BRAMS) and ETA Regional Model (ETA), by means of the Mean Error (ME) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), during the most rainy four months period (January to April 2012) on Eastern Amazonia. The models displayed errors of superestimation and underestimation with respect to the observed precipitation, mainly over center-north of Pará and all of Amapá, where the precipitation is higher. Among the analyzed models, GFS shows the best performance, except during January and March, when the model to underestimated precipitation, possibly due to the anomalously high values recorded.

Abstract:
Background: Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder with a complex genetic factor determining its disease onset. Nevertheless, it is not clear in this mental disorder. Objective: To conduct a systematic review of articles regarding the genetic markers and mutations in schizophrenia. Methods: A systematic review of articles on genetic markers and mutations in schizophrenia, published from January 1, 2011, to September 7, 2015, on SCOPUS database was carried out. Search terms were “Genetic markers”, “Mutation”, and “Schizophrenia”. Results: Of the 527 retrieved studies, 31 met the eligibility criteria. Genetic polymorphism, Immune-associated genes, TCF4 and ZNF804A association with microRNA, Neuregulin gene, Chromosome 13q32 and 11p15.4, genes involved in glutamatergic via schizophrenia and brain structure, appeared to be associated with the origin of schizophrenia. Conclusion: Some studies show genes involved in several pathways leading to the disease pathogenesis such as that one related with the dopaminergic and immune system, or rare alleles. Some genes present no involvement in the etiology of this mental disorder. These findings clarify the genetic complexity of schizophrenia and affirm that together, the genes have an overall effect greater than the sum of the individual effect of each gene.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to assess the effect of the coffee berry husk extract, thyme essential oil and acibenzolar-s-methyl on the germination and micelial growth and on in vivo development of cercospora coffeicola, and to characterize their efficiency as resistance inducers in coffee plants, and to determine the peroxidase activity and lignin accumulation in tissues of coffee tree. the coffee berry husk extract presented no toxic effect on germination; however, it inhibited the mycelial growth proportionally to the increase of the concentrations. the thyme essential oil inhibited the germination and the mycelial growth with the increase of concentrations. both coffee berry husk extract and acibenzolar-s-methyl neither affected the germination nor the development of germinative tubes, differently of thyme essential oil. seedlings treated with acibenzolar-s-methyl, coffee berry husk extract and thyme essential oil presented peaks of peroxidase activity at 2nd and 11th, 7th and 11th and, 2nd and 9th days after treatment, respectively. the treatments did not differ in lignin content. coffee berry husk extract and acibenzolar-s-methyl induced resistance in coffee seedlings against c. coffeicola, and thyme essential oil presented toxic effect on the pathogen.

Abstract: Aims: Twelve crude extracts were prepared from different parts of Pluchea sagittalis, Cecropia palmata and Brachiaria brizantha, and their effect on the light reaction of photosynthesis. Study Design: Use of fluorescence of ChL a (Chlorophyll a) to detect inhibitors of photosynthesis in plant extracts. Place and Duration of Study: Instituto de Ciências Ambientais, Químicas e Farmacêuticas, Departamento de Ciências Exatas e da Terra, Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo (UNIFESP), between July 2015 and January 2016. Methodology: The samples had their effect on the light reaction of photosynthesis studied by Chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence transient by the use of chloroplasts isolated from spinach leaves. As negative controls we used the same amounts of DMSO that have been employed to solubilize the samples, and as positive control we have used 10 μM of the commercial herbicide DCMU (Diuron). Results: The extracts inhibited the photosynthesis, and their inhibition sites were located in the range of electron flow from OEC complex and between P680 to QA of PS II, and inhibited the photosystem II (PS II) by inducing the appearance of the transient bands K and J. Conclusion: Our results suggest an indicative that the photochemical apparatus probably is failing at the donor and acceptor sides of PSII, causing damage to electron transport during the photosynthesis phenomenon.

Abstract: phenology of potted zinnia 'profusion cherry' grown in a greenhouse with plastic cover was evaluated for weekly sowing dates from: 2/4/05 to 6/17/05. the length of plant cycle was influenced by air temperature and photoperiod. the average length of the phase sowing to first open flower varied from 39 days for the sowing dates of 03/11/05 and 03/18/05 to 63 days for 06/10/05. it was also showed that estimates of the length (d) of the period sowing to first open flower could be obtained by the following equation: 1/d = 0.019108 + 0.001968 t - 0.00352 f (r2 = 0.99) where, t is the mean air temperature (oc) and f is the mean photoperiod (hours).

Abstract: in the traditional regions of grape growers, where the incidence of rain is concentrated on the stage of fruit development and maturation, the search for improved crop management strategies is justified, aiming at attenuate the impact of it on yield quality. an experiment with grapevine "cabernet sauvignon" cultivated on rootstocks iac 766, iac 572 and ripária do traviú was carried out in jundiaí, s?o paulo state, brazil, under plastic greenhouse. the search was focused on the microclimate modification in the environment of cultivated grapes from its conduction in partially modified crop cultivation environment (plastic cover with open sides), as well as evaluates the impact on the crop yield and fruit sugar concentration, comparing results to simultaneous data gathered in a open sky cultivation environment. results showed that the use of plastic cover to cultivate grapes has implied a decrease in the levels of solar radiation to 85.4% and an increase in the maximum temperatures in 1.3 oc. separated analysis for crop environment shown that "cabernet sauvignon" cultivated on rootstock "iac 766" and "iac 572" achieved the best performance (yield and sugar concentration) being superior to the "riparia do traviú". comparing data from cultivation environments used in the experiment revealed no statistical differences on yield; however the sugar concentration was higher for the set of open sky cultivation environment.

Abstract: soil and geomorphic surfaces were studied on a sandstone/basalt hillslope segment, commonly found in the jaboticabal region (nw s?o paulo state). main objectives were to relate the geomorphic surfaces with chemical, physical and mineralogical properties of oxisols and to apply geostatistic methods as a helping tool for their automatic location. soils were sampled at depths of 0.6 to 0.8 m (upper b-horizons) in a 1,700 m long transect at regular 25 m intervals, amounting to 109 sampling sites. soil samples were analyzed for particle density, particle-size-distribution, soil cec, clay cec, total clay iron and "free" iron oxides. iron free clays were submitted to x ray diffraction analysis. three geomorphic surfaces were identified based on fieldwork and previous stratigraphic knowledge. the topographic profile was also analyzed. the different geomorphic surfaces are well-related to physical, chemical and mineralogical soil properties. the variability of the clay and iron amounts were higher in the lower part of the slope (over basaltic rocks). variation on slope gradient, when analyzed by the "split moving windows dissimilarity analysis", showed to be useful to indicate geomorphic surface boundaries. most of the soil variability was logically well-related to the surface age, parent material and slope gradient. geomorphic work proved to be very useful to help outline detailed soil survey maps as well as to help understand soil evolution process.
