IoT Testbed Business Model  [PDF]
Edgar M. Silva, Pedro Maló
Advances in Internet of Things (AIT) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ait.2014.44006
Abstract: The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is today one of the hypes in the technological world but despite the enormous attention and research investment, the clear business value is still hard to perceive. IoT deployments are costly to be installed, managed and maintained, and need to provide a very clear value to justify the investments. For another viewpoint, IoT technologies need to be proven before deployment, which implies the need to test and assess IoT solutions in real settings and involve the actual target users. And as such, this presents an opportunity to have IoT deployments with a clear business model mainly focused on real-life large-scale research and technological experimentation. This would mean having a sustainable IoT infrastructure in-place based on the provision of experimentation services and a trial environment to industry and research, which then could also present an opportunity to establish added-value (business) services. This is the exact idea of the flagship SmartSantander testbed facility and especially its major deployment in the city of Santander, Spain. The SmartSantander facility business model is built around experimentally-driven research and technology development thus attracting many experimenters from industry and European research projects. This model makes it possible to sustain an outstanding large-scale IoT deployment of around 12,000 sensors and on top of it the development of new the development of new services and applications especially targeting the needs of users (citizens, businesses, authorities) in smart-cities. This paper studies the business model of outstanding SmartSantander facility in order to provide a generic Business Model for IoT testbeds that can provide guidance and be adapted by owners (or owners to-be) wishing to exploit their IoT deployments as facilities supporting experimentation and trials of IoT solutions.
Santander M.,Pedro;
Literatura y lingüística , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0716-58112004001500012
Abstract: the next work deals with the representation that is made of the citizens without social power in chilean television news, from the perspective of the discourse analysis. it is analyzed how they access linguistically to the news discourse. unlike what other studies claim, it is stated that the access of the citizens to television is frequent. however, it is often associated to controversial and tragic situations; besides, strategies that turn them into second-class informative sources are linguistically predominant: is not talked to them, but about them
Olaechea,Pedro M.;
Medicina Intensiva , 2009,
Abstract: a systematic revision of medical publications between 2006 and 2008 regarding bacterial infections that affect the critical patients was performed. four subjects were selected: community-acquired pneumonia, ventilator-associated pneumonia, catheter-related bloodstream infection and new antimicrobial treatments. when dealing with community-acquired pneumonia and due to the absence of completely reliable standards, it is necessary to follow the locally adapted guidelines of clinical practice, to identify patients related to the health-care system and admit patients to the icu in accordance with the criteria. regarding the etiological diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia, any microbiological information available must be used. due to the risk of multidrug bacteria, combined empiric therapy should be initiated immediately and then mono-therapy adjusted to the antibiogram should be established. already established measures for mechanical ventilation associated pneumonia and catheter-related bacteriemias, which have been effective, should be implemented. the empirical treatment of catheter-related bacteremia must be directed towards the most probable pathogens according to the puncture site. the most recently sold antibiotics are basically directed towards multidrug gram positive resistant bacteria. however, for the treatment of gram negative resistant bacilli, the use of the new antimicrobials must be combined with a new evaluation of the antibiotics that have been used for years and the possibility of choosing different administration forms.
COMUNIDADES DE ESPONJAS DE LOS ARRECIFES DEL ARCHIPIéLAGO SABANA-CAMAGüEY, CUBA
Alcolado,Pedro M.;
Boletín de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras - INVEMAR , 1999,
Abstract: the research was carried out in order to know the sponge community composition and structure of the archipelago sabana-camagüey, and to assay their use as indicators of the environmental severity and predictability, as well as of the most important stressors of this territory. for this purpose, sampling was done at stations located in 10 reef transects (between 10 and 20 m deep). species which occurred more frequently with numerical dominance are typical of environments submitted to b sedimentation and turbulence, which suggests that these environmental stressors and light are the main determinants of sponge community structure and composition in the studied reefs. the development of dense algal mats is also determinant in shallow stations. species heterogeneity and species richness, and density tended to be higher toward deeper stations, which indicates an increase of environmental favorability for sponges with depth. equitability tended to be more homogeneous across the studied depth range. its values were generally high, which suggests relatively constant environments for sponges. heterogeneity index was more frequently influenced by equitabiliy than by species richness. for that reason, a greater influence of environmental stability than environmental favorability on the high values of this index in the studied reefs is suggested. by means of a meta-analysis process, the position of the values of some indexes within their universe of variation was analyzed. at more than 10 m in depth diversity indexes tended to be relatively higher than in other cuban reefs. also by applying meta-analysis, stations were classified within a bidimensional gradient of environmental severity and environmental predictability. univariate indexes and the dominant species, complemented with species dependent multivariate methods permit to infer the most important stressors, and environmental severity and predictability.
Técnicas para análise de desempenho de computadores
Vazquez, Pedro A. M.;
Química Nova , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422002000100020
Abstract: a series of open source benchmarks for computer performance analysis of personal computers with a focus on computational chemistry calculations is presented. the results returned by these tests are discussed and used to correlate with the actual performance of a set of computers available for research on two computing intensive fields of chemistry, quantum chemical and molecular simulation calculations.
AGUILAR M,PEDRO;
Revista chilena de enfermedades respiratorias , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-73482008000200006
Abstract: cigarette smoking in children represents a major public health problem, all over the world. in south america, chile occupies the first place in cigarette comsuption by children, even though many campaigns exist to avoid it. the devastating effect of tobacco exposure starts in fetal life and continues through lifetime. we present some main features in child asthma related to active and passive exposure to cigarette smoke
MéNDEZ,Pedro;
Revista de Pedagogía , 2003,
Abstract: the issue of knowledge construction having as a tool computer education is currently a major development in the area of teaching and learning. this paper originates from practice in higher education teaching and research. it attempts to establish a relationship between some concepts from l. vygotsky`s theories, specifically those addressing the subject area of language and writing, and computer applications at the pre-school level. in this study we have evaluated some multimedia applications and, as a result of the evaluation, an attempt at incorporating the theoretical principles of the zone of proximal development has been made. these proposals are put in practice in an attempt to stimulate some cognitive processes related to concept formation in four-year-old children. results tend to promote avenues for research on the relationship between computer education, socio-cultural contexts, and education within constructivist perspectives.
Reliable disturbance rejection
Ferreira, Pedro M. G.;
Sba: Controle & Automa??o Sociedade Brasileira de Automatica , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-17592005000100006
Abstract: the paper studies the reliability (sensor and actuator failures) of the asymptotic disturbance rejection problem for linear time invariant systems using the factorization approach, assuming that not all loops fail simultaneously and that sensor and actuator do not fail simultaneously. the plant is two-output, i.e. two-vector-output, and the disturbance is at the measured output of the plant. necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for the general problem and a simple solution is given for problems with stable plants.
Santander M,Pedro;
Revista signos , 2002, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-09342002005100016
Abstract: the following article examines from the perspective of critical discourse analysis (cda) the relation among access, discourse and power in chilean television newscasts. the aim is to establish how the language used by journalists determines the way sources access to the news and how they are represented. therefore, we analyze comparatively the way the same news was diffused during november 2000 in the most important television newscasts.
The next work deals with the representation that is made of the citizens without social power in Chilean television news, from the perspective of the Discourse Analysis.
