High-level robot programming based on CAD: dealing with unpredictable environments
Pedro Neto,Nuno Mendes,Ricardo Araújo,J. Norberto Pires,A. Paulo Moreira
Computer Science , 2013, DOI: 10.1108/01439911211217125
Abstract: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a CAD-based human-robot interface that allows non-expert users to teach a robot in a manner similar to that used by human beings to teach each other. Design/methodology/approach - Intuitive robot programming is achieved by using CAD drawings to generate robot programs off-line. Sensory feedback allows minimization of the effects of uncertainty, providing information to adjust the robot paths during robot operation. Findings - It was found that it is possible to generate a robot program from a common CAD drawing and run it without any major concerns about calibration or CAD model accuracy. Research limitations/implications - A limitation of the proposed system has to do with the fact that it was designed to be used for particular technological applications. Practical implications - Since most manufacturing companies have CAD packages in their facilities today, CAD-based robot programming may be a good option to program robots without the need for skilled robot programmers. Originality/value - The paper proposes a new CAD-based robot programming system. Robot programs are directly generated from a CAD drawing running on a commonly available 3D CAD package (Autodesk Inventor) and not from a commercial, computer aided robotics (CAR) software, making it a simple CAD integrated solution. This is a low-cost and low-setup time system where no advanced robot programming skills are required to operate it. In summary, robot programs are generated with a high-level of abstraction from the robot language.

Biotemas , 2009,
Abstract: This work aimed to identify the pollination syndromes of species in Mata do Buraquinho, PB, Brazil. The relationships among the floral attributes of the vegetable species and the rewards offered to the pollinators were evaluated. Within the 88 species studied, 50.2% were whitish flowers and 48.7% were conspicuous, mainly represented by trees and shrubs. The majority of the species (66%) had small flowers, followed by large and medium flowers. Most of the shrubs, vines and herbs had small flowers. The collectivist pollination unit was the most representative (71.5%). The trees obtained the highest percentage among the collectivist species (30.1%). The tube was the predominant kind of flower (72.7%), followed by the disk, the flag and the inconspicuous. The majority of the flowers were actinomorphic (60.2%), while 38.6% were zigomorphic. Regarding the sexual systems, 88.6% were hermaphroditic flowers, while 8% were monoecious and only 3.4% were dioecious. The most frequent resource was nectar (64.7%), followed by pollen (14.7%), nectar/pollen (12.5%) and oil (1.1%). Entomophilia was the predominant pollination syndrome, followed by melitophilia (57%), other insects (16.8%) and psicophilia (14.7%). Melitophilia was the most representative among the trees. Ornithofilia represented 7% and chiropterophilia 3.4%. Neither ornithofilia nor chiropterophilia were found among the shrubs.

Electronic Journal of Biotechnology , 2012,
Abstract: background: the yeast strain ib09 was isolated from the gut of calosoma sp. (carabidae, coleoptera, insecta) that were collected in the central amazon rainforest. first, tolerance of the strain to ethanol and heat was tested. then, ib09 was cultivated in a medium using sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolyzate as a carbon source, and cell growth (od600), specific growth rate (μmax, h-1), biomass yield (yb, g.g-1) and relative sugar consumption (rsc, %) were evaluated. taxonomic identification was determined by sequencing the its1 region of ib09 and comparing it to sequences obtained from the genbank database (ncbi). results: ib09 showed both ethanol tolerance and thermotolerance. relative sugar consumption indicated that ib09 was able to perform saccharification of sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolyzate, increasing the total reducing sugar concentration by approximately 50%. the μmax value obtained was 0,20, indicating that cell growth was slow under the assessed conditions. biomass yield was 0,701 g per g of consumed sugar, which is relatively high when compared with other findings in the literature. after 120 hrs of cultivation, 80,1% of total reducing sugar had been consumed. sequencing of the its1 region identified ib09 as trichosporon mycotoxinivorans. conclusion: this is the first report to document this species in the central amazon rainforest at this host. trichosporon mycotoxinivorans has great biotechnological potential for use in the saccharification of sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolyzate and for biomass production with this substrate as carbon source.

Abstract: the giant of amazon basin, pirarucu, arapaima gigas, is the largest scaled freshwater fish in the world. pirarucu cultivation has recently started, driven by the decline in natural populations and high market value. currently, there are no reliable methods for sexual differentiation in this species other than direct examination of gonads, which requires dissection of specimens. a non-lethal and less invasive method for sexual identification is highly desirable in order to properly group broodstock for mating and offspring production. we utilized laparoscopic examination in anesthetized pirarucu to differentiate between male and female individuals. this method allowed for the observation and differentiation of the reproductive organs within an individual. our results suggest that laparoscopy is an efficient method for sex differentiation in pirarucu causing minimal stress to the fish.

Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532005000500013
Abstract: anticorrosive properties of the following environmental friendly inorganic pigments were evaluated: zinc phosphate (zp), zinc molybdate (zm), zinc calcium molybdate (zcm), zinc phosphomolybdate (zpm) and zinc calcium phosphomolybdate (zcpm). aisi 1010 steel samples were immersed in 10-2 mol dm-3 nacl aqueous solution saturated with one of the pigments, followed by mass loss measurements, by monitoring the open circuit potential with immersion time and by potentiodynamic linear polarization at 1 mv s-1. the corrosion products on the steel surface were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray and x-rays diffraction analyses. all the pigments inhibited the corrosion of steel. the films formed on the steel surface protect the substrate against corrosion. the results suggest a synergic effect of phosphate and molybdate compounds in the phosphomolybdate-based pigments, improving the corrosion resistance of steel. the zmp and zcpm decreased the corrosion rate by a factor of 2.15 and 3.50, respectively.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2012000400014
Abstract: neurosarcoidosis (ns) more commonly occurs in the setting of systemic disease. the diagnosis is based on a clinical history suggestive of ns, presence of noncaseating granulomas, and supportive evidence of sarcoid pathology, laboratory, and imaging studies. ns could involve any part of the nervous system and often demands high doses of steroids for symptom control. it presents low response to isolated steroids administration and frequently requires immunosuppressive agents. in ns, lymphocytes are polarized toward an excessive th1 response, leading to overproduction of tnf-alpha and inf-gama, as well as ll-2 and il-15. infliximab, a chimeric monoclonal antibody that neutralizes the biological activity of tnf-alpha, is a new option in the ns treatment. we revised pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic work up, and treatment of ns as guidance for the general neurologist.
