Revista Brasileira de Cardiologia Invasiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S2179-83972011000100018
Abstract: percutaneous transcatheter embolization has become the treatment of choice for pulmonary arteriovenous fistulae (pavfs), replacing surgical intervention in most cases. classical devices, such as intravascular coils and detachable balloons, have proven to be successful for percutaneous occlusions of small or medium-sized pavfs; however, they are not ideal for larger and high flow fistulae due to the risk of embolization to systemic circulation. the case of a 49-year-old woman with high flow pulmonary fistula and previous neurological ischemic manifestations undergoing successful transcatheter closure with an amplatzertm vascular plug ii, a device designed for occlusion of vascular abnormalities, is reported.

Brazilian Dental Journal , 2002,
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro the antimicrobial activity of calcium hydroxide in combination with several vehicles against some microorganisms commonly isolated from root canals. Antimicrobial activity was determined by the agar diffusion method. Stainless-steel cylinders were placed on each inoculated agar medium. The test medicaments and their controls were placed inside the cylinders. The zones of growth inhibition were measured and recorded after incubation for each plate and the results were analyzed statistically (ANOVA). The in vitro antimicrobial effects of the medications were ranked from strongest to weakest as follows: Ca(OH)2 + CMCP + glycerine, Ca(OH)2 + CMCP, Ca(OH)2 + glycerine, Ca(OH)2 + anesthetic, Ca(OH)2 + saline, Ca(OH)2 + H2O, Ca(OH)2 + polyethyleneglycol. The pastes with oily vehicles showed significantly larger mean zones of inhibition compared to those with aqueous or viscous vehicles. It was concluded that diffusion and antimicrobial activity of calcium hydroxide were affected by the type of vehicle used.

Abstract: The Cucurbita maxima Duchesne is a vegetable crop plant cultivated and maintained by traditional Amazon communities, Brazil. The situation is worsened by the possibility of disappearance of local populations and genetic variability of this specie, taking into account the today changes promoted in family farming. The aim of this study was to estimate the current levels of genetic variability of local cultivars through the use of molecular markers (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism—AFLP). We chose to collect in two distinct micro regions in order to identify possible influences of geographic isolation and different levels of market requirements in the conservation of the genetic variability of the C. maxima. For the molecular analysis, bulk samples of fresh leaves of 15 plants/half-sibling family were collected in paper bags. There were 34 samples from the half-sib families. The analysis of the results half-sib obtained by methods of estimation of genetic variation by molecular markers shows that the forms of cultivation and management adopted by family farmers maintain the identities of the local/landraces (native cultivars) and, at the same time, the levels of diversity for the assurance of adaptability macro-environmental.

Acta Botanica Brasilica , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33062005000400025
Abstract: an experiment was conducted with the aim to analyze the effects of soil flooding and leaf position on net primary productivity and whole plant carbon balance of annona glabra l. (annonaceae) seedlings, a highly flood-tolerant tree, native to the tropical americas. all seedlings survived a period of 56 days of flooding without symptoms of stress. flooding induced significant increments in root, stem and whole-plant biomass (p <0.01), and in the root:shoot mass ratio (p <0.05). measurements of leaf gas exchange were conducted at days four, 11, 18 and 56 after flooding, on the first (l1), fourth (l4) and seventh (l7) fully expanded leaves from the apex of each seedling. the mean values of stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) and net photosynthetic rate (a) in the control seedlings were around 0.26 mol m-2s-1 and 8.8 μmol m-2s-1, respectively. significant reductions (p <0.05) in a were observed from l1 to l7 in controls at all four days of measurements. reductions in a with increasing leaf age also ocurred for flooded plants, but only at days four and 18. flooding induced significant changes in gs (p <0.05), reaching 65% of controls at day four but 152% of controls at day 56. based on the results we conclude that the high survival and growth rates of a. glabra seedlings are directly related to the capacity to mantain a high stomatal conductance and net photosynthetic rate under soil flooding.

Abstract: tuberculosis remains one of the major causes of mortality worldwide. the early detection of new cases is an important goal in the program of tuberculosis control. several methodologies for rapid and accurate laboratorial diagnosis have been developed, however, some of these techniques are expensive or cumbersome, making their implementation in low-income regions unfeasible. in this study, the thin layer culture method was compared with conventional culture method and it was observed that it provides earlier results and a presumptive species identification, being adequate alternative method for rapid laboratory diagnosis.
