Abstract:
Anterior Choroidal Artery Territory Stroke in Young Patient  [PDF]
Denise Lopes, Helena Felgueiras, Pedro Carneiro
Case Reports in Clinical Medicine (CRCM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/crcm.2014.38109
Abstract:

Introduction: Stroke incidence in young patients is about 10 cases in 100.000, according to several European studies. In this age group arterial dissection is one of the main pathological mechanisms involved. The internal carotid’s artery (ICA) main supraclinoid branch is the anterior choroidal artery (AChA). The occurrence of infarction in its territory due to internal carotid dissection is considered to be a rare event and may have different clinical presentations due to anatomical variability. Clinical case: A 31-year-old male patient, without any known cardiovascular risk factors or chronic medication, presented with acute onset of stabbing right sided headache while practicing football. Visual disturbances and hemiparesis with hypesthesia of his left arm were also mentioned. On admission left homonymous hemianopsia, left hemiparesis and left extensor plantar reflex were present. Brain magnetic resonance showed hyperintensity of T2 and FLAIR signals and restricted diffusion pattern suggested acute/subacute infarctions in the thalamic and subcapsular area, corpus callosum, splenium and subcortical parietal right region. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the brain showed reduction of the right ICA’s caliber, mainly of its supraclinoid segment in which a marked irregular stenosis was visualized, suggestive of arterial dissection. This stenotic segment included the origin of the AChA and of the posterior communicating cerebral artery with an exchange in their territories. Lumbar puncture results were normal as were analytical investigations which included CBC, sedimentation rate, syphilis serology and immunologic and prothrombotic screen. There were no phenotype characteristics suggestive of connective tissue disease. Conclusion: Trauma seems to be the most probable lesion mechanism for the occurrence of intracranial carotid’s dissection in this particular case, as the patient was practicing vigorous sports at time of onset. In view of great anatomic variability and multiple anatomical sites supplied by the AChA its occlusion will induce a wide range of clinical manifestations.

Modelo de mudan?as climáticas com gastos públicos
Carneiro, Pedro Erik Arruda;
Contexto Internacional , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-85292008000100002
Abstract: in this paper, i, mainly, analyzed the inclusion of environmental budget in climate change models. considering kemfert, lise and tol (2004)'s approach to show a formal model that puts together economic and climate issues, i analyzed the inclusion of environmental public spending and energy. i tried to show that countries' economic and physical structures establish different public spending, with different environmental impacts and consequences to another nations and that has strong influence on economic models. in relation to public spending, i considered, specifically, the brazilian federal budget to environmental management from 2000 to 2006. in this article, i argue in defense of considering budget for environmental management in the discussion on climate change.

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2003000600005
Abstract: an observational, cross-sectional study was used to describe the anthropometric characteristics of 549 full-term neonates with respect to body proportionality. the anthropometric measures used were: weight (w), length (l), head circumference (hc), rohrer?s ponderal index (pi), w/hc ratio, and l/hc ratio. severity of intrauterine growth retardation (iugr) was studied through z-score distribution. small-for-gestational-age (sga) was defined as a z-score value < -2, and the cutoff for pi, w/hc, and l/hc was determined as the mean minus one standard deviation for the local reference population. based on pi, 72.8% of sga neonates and 12.8% of appropriate-for-gestational-age (aga) neonates were disproportionate. based on the l/hc ratio the results were 25.6% and 11.6%, respectively, while with the w/hc ratio, all sga and 16.3% of aga neonates were disproportionate. according to all criteria there was an observed significant linear tendency to increase the disproportionality as iugr increased.

Abstract: the physical system known as spherical pendulum is usually taken as an example of the applications of analytical mechanics. this deprives those people who had no contact with this approach to classical mechanics of the complete understanding of how this system behaves. so, in this work, we use newtonian mechanics to present a study of the motion of a spherical pendulum. to do this, we obtain its equations of motion, determine the quantities that are conserved during the time evolution of this system, analyze its effective potential energy and discuss the different motions that this system can have. we present several numerical results, and a qualitative comparison with experimental data is made

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2003,
Abstract: Trata-se de estudo do tipo observacional, de corte transversal, para descrever as características antropométricas e proporcionalidade corporal de 549 recém-nascidos a termo (RNT).

Fitopatologia Brasileira , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-41582007000400001
Abstract: meloidogyne mayaguensis has been reported in some states of brazil causing severe damage on commercial guava (psidium guajava l.). accessions of psidium spp. were selected from a collection maintained in embrapa clima temperado (pelotas, rio grande do sul state). plants of different accessions were grown from seed in plastic bags and, when they reached 15-20 cm in height, were inoculated with 10,000 eggs/plant of m. mayaguensis. eight months after inoculation, the different accessions were evaluated for resistance to m. mayaguensis. three accessions of p. guajava were highly susceptible (rf=59.2) to this nematode. psidium friedrichsthalianium was considered to be moderately resistant (rf=1.9). three accessions of p. cattleyanum were immune to m. mayaguensis (rf = 0). when used as rootstocks p. cattleyanum and p. friedrichsthalianium were compatible with p. guajava cv. paluma. considering these results, the use of resistant rootstocks provides a promising control method for m. mayaguensis in commercial guava crop.

Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology , 2012,
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to characterize the genetic variability in 100 genotypes of the Active Germplasm Bank of common bean of the Federal University of Vi osa, by morphological descriptors, classify them in groups of genetic similarity and to identify the degree of relevance of descriptors of genetic divergence. The genotypes were evaluated based on 22 quantitative and qualitative morphological descriptors. The highyielding genotypes V 7936, Gold Gate, LM 95103904, 1829 S 349 Venezuela, and PF 9029975, CNFC 9454 andFe 732015, with upright growth, have potential for use as parents in common bean breeding programs. By genetic divergence analysis, the genotypes were clustered in eight groups of genetic dissimilarity. By methods of principal components, 9 of the 22 descriptors were eliminated, for being redundant or little variable, suggesting that 10-20 morphological descriptors can be used in studies of characterization of genetic variation.

Abstract: this article analyses the textbook published 1991 "challenge of the natural environment", written by brian knapp, simon ross and duncan mccrae, adopting the water cycle as a dynamic background for the flows and interactions between the earth spheres. the water cycle helps students to understand the difference between the subject matter and the investigation of geology, a distinction which is fundamental for the teaching of earth sciences. such approach helps to understand the way geology has evolved as a science. the object of investigation is the crust, where a great diversity of structures, rock compositions, fabrics and textures exist. the subject matter is the historical-geological process reconstructed from naturally "fixed" forms. the step-by-step approach goes from the simplest to the most comprehensive concepts; it highlights the risks caused by: (a) an incomplete knowledge of natural processes or (b) absence of concern for effects of human activities on nature.
