Robust Image Registration Based on Mutual Information Measure  [PDF]

Abstract: A new implementation of the image registration algorithm based on the mutual information is presented for the case of medical images. The registration is achieved if the maximum of the mutual information is attained. In this maximization process optimal values of five parameters of an affine transformation are searched.

Abstract: Introduction of hysteroscopy to gynaecological daily practice caused huge progress in diagnostics and therapy of intrauterine pathology. The next phase was introducing the electroresectoscope and methods of permanent flow of drugs expanding the uterine cavity. To ensure optimal conditions for patient treatment and also economic reasons such procedures should be carried out in ambulatory mode or "one day surgery". It is necessary in that case to choose adequate anaesthesiological techniques, for example analgosedation. Analgosedation is an alternative to general anaesthesia. A major problem for the anaesthesiologist is keeping the correct level of analgosedation. Mostly to measure depth of sedation different scales are in use, for example Ramsay's scale. Application of bispectral analysis (BIS) to measure analgosedation in hysteroscopic procedures allows treatment to be carried out in the best comfort for the patient and in the most secure way, owing to dose optimisation of drugs used to obtain the correct level of analgosedation.
Activity of selected cytokines in bipolar patients during manic and depressive episodes [Ocena aktywno ci wybranych cytokin w epizodzie maniakalnym i depresyjnym choroby afektywnej dwubiegunowej]

Abstract: Aim. The aim of the study was to examine the activity of selected cytokines in bipolar patients during manic and depressive episodes and in remission. Method. The cytokine status was assessed in 76 bipolar patients, 35 with mania – and 41 with depression. For cytokine measurements blood samples were drawn from each patient twice – while in an acute episode and in remission. 78 healthy individuals were examined once. Serum samples were tested for concentrations of : IL-6, IL-10, IL-1 , TNF-., IFN-. using the cytometric method. The patients’ mental status was assessed with Young Mania Rating Scale and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Results. Concentration of IL-6 was higher during the manic state as compared to control group. Additionally, IL-6 level was higher in mania than in remission. Concentration of IL-10 was higher in patients in remission after manic episodes than in healthy controls. In manic patients raising of IFN-. level was accompanied by more severe symptoms evaluated with YMRS. In remission after mania there was a correlation between IL-6 concentration and the intensity of the manic state. IFN-. level was higher in depressed patients comparing to remission, as well as manic patients and subjects from control group. IFN-. in remission after depression was still higher than in the healthy controls. Concentration of IL-1 was higher in depressed patients comparing to healthy subjects. Conclusion. The results obtained in this study show disturbances of the immune system in bipolar patients. These disturbances have features of either decrease or pathological increase of the immune response. Cytokines’ profiles were different for mania and depression. Clinical improvement seems to be connected with immunomodulation process that results in changes of cytokine levels in bipolar patients in remission.
Global Changes in DNA Methylation in Seeds and Seedlings of Pyrus communis after Seed Desiccation and Storage

Abstract: The effects of storage and deep desiccation on structural changes of DNA in orthodox seeds are poorly characterized. In this study we analyzed the 5-methylcytosine (m5C) global content of DNA isolated from seeds of common pear (Pyrus communis L.) that had been subjected to extreme desiccation, and the seedlings derived from these seeds. Germination and seedling emergence tests were applied to determine seed viability after their desiccation. In parallel, analysis of the global content of m5C in dried seeds and DNA of seedlings obtained from such seeds was performed with a 2D TLC method. Desiccation of fresh seeds to 5.3% moisture content (mc) resulted in a slight reduction of DNA methylation, whereas severe desiccation down to 2–3% mc increased DNA methylation. Strong desiccation of seeds resulted in the subsequent generation of seedlings of shorter height. A 1-year period of seed storage induced a significant increase in the level of DNA methylation in seeds. It is possible that alterations in the m5C content of DNA in strongly desiccated pear seeds reflect a reaction of desiccation-tolerant (orthodox) seeds to severe desiccation. Epigenetic changes were observed not only in severely desiccated seeds but also in 3-month old seedlings obtained from these seeds. With regard to seed storage practices, epigenetic assessment could be used by gene banks for early detection of structural changes in the DNA of stored seeds.
Motives of espionage against ones own country in the light of idiographic studies

Abstract: The money is perceived as the common denominator among people who have spied against their own country. This assumption is common sense and appears to be self-evident truth. But do we have any hard evidences to prove the validity of such a statement? What method could be applied to determine it? This article is a review of the motives behind one's resorting to spying activity which is a complex and multifarious process. I decided to present only the phenomenon of spying for another country. The studies on the motives behind taking up spying activity are idiographic in character. One of the basic methodological problems to be faced by the researchers of this problem is an inaccessibility of a control group.

Abstract: Quality control of the endoplasmic reticulum plays a critical role in protein folding, modification andmodification of a secretory pathway. As endoplasmic reticulum chaperones, calreticulin and calnexinhave similar substrate specificity and share several common features. Yet, surprisingly, mice bearing adisruption in the calreticulin gene die from a lesion in cardiac development and develop significantmetabolic problems whereas calnexin-deficient mice are born alive with, yet not understood, neurologicalproblems. Studies with calreticulin and calnexin gene knockout mice and calreticulin- and calnexindeficientcell lines indicate that calnexin is unable to compensate for the loss of calreticulin andconversely, calreticulin cannot compensate for the loss of calnexin. Calreticulin or calnexin deficiency orreduction in the level of ERp57 protein (ERp57 heterozygote mice) leads to development of metabolicdisorders as documented by sever changes serum lipids and carbohydrates composition in these animals.These observations indicate that calreticulin, calnexin and ERp57, in addition of being involved inmaturation of glycoproteins in the endoplasmic reticulum, perform other distinct functions includingaffecting energy metabolism.

Abstract: Sesqui- and sesterterpenes of ophiobolin and fusicoccin families are important synthetic targets because of complexity of structure and potentially useful physiological activities, including anti-tumor activity. A synthesis of versatile building blocks for these terpenoids is described. Cyclopenta[8]annulene rings system with properly dislocated substituents was constructed using as key steps ring closing metathesis reaction and Wagner - Meerwein rearrangement. Ring closing metathesis reaction leading to cyclopenta[8]annulene was studied in detail.
Equivalent for Electromagnetic Transient Calculation in Power System with Multiple Transmission Line  [PDF]

The results of searching of equivalent for electromagnetic transient calculation in power system with the big number of transmission lines are shown. Brief information on the proper transmission line model is given. Comparison of results of simulation in real and reduced system is presented taking into consideration three methods of identification. Some example are examined for different number of transmission lines in reduced system and consequently the recommendation are given for searching of equivalents of systems with many lines.

Amateur Sports of the Elderly: A Chance for Health and a Higher Quality of Life  [PDF]

A significant increase in sports-leisure activity events in recent years presents the opportunity to compete in all age categories. Among the many sport varieties, special attention ought to be paid to amateur sports—recreational sports, particularly in the context of the increasing leisure time among the elderly. Recreational sports activities are free of many distortions and defects of the modern professional sport. Recreational sports are egalitarian, not exclusive. The health paradigm is always at the heart of it, along with a strong emphasis on hedonism. Sport activities reveal self-fulfillment as the highest needs, giving fulfillment and satisfaction. The ease in the selection of a sports goal makes the amateur sports an important tool for the shaping of persons’ life and health. A sports goal, which is participating in sports events, provides a strong motivation for systematic work. Striving for transgression is a source of strong emotions and satisfaction. Struggling with a persons’ own body, with old age, may be a valuable challenge that would positively impact wellbeing in the psychosocial aspect. This study shows a social phenomenon of sports activity among the elderly, dynamically growing in Poland. It also presents multiple benefits for the general wellbeing as well as the potential threats which a lack of distance to the sports rivalry may cause when it crosses the line behind which a persistent pursuit of the purpose (sport result) may end up in health damage. The line between recreation and sport is thin and difficult to distinguish. Animators, trainers, and instructors need to skillfully manage the interests of older people so that their involvement in physical activity determines a safe and healthy lifestyle.
