Influence of CDW Recycled Aggregate on Drying Shrinkage of Mortar  [PDF]
Paulo Roberto Lopes Lima, Monica Batista Leite
Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2012.22009
Abstract: The use of fine recycled aggregates as raw material in the production of mortars appears as a good alternative to minimize waste disposal, so as to reduce natural resources consumption and to find and supply suitable substitutes for natural aggregates. However, the use of this alternative material in a safe way must be carried out by a wide investigation of its long term behavior. In this way, this paper will examine the mechanical strength, physical properties and drying shrinkage of mortar, which use recycled fine aggregates that have originated from construction and demolition waste (CDW) containing mortar (55%), ceramic (26%) and concrete (16%). Two natural mortars, made with natural sand, were produced with cement/sand ratios of 1:4 and 1:8 (by weight) and a fixed consistency index of 260 +10 mm. Recycled mortar was produced with 50% of substitution rate, in volume, of natural aggregate by recycled one. Results show that recycled mortars present higher total porosity, absorption rate and drying shrinkage than reference mortar.
O atraso tecnológico da América Latina como decorrência de aspectos geográficos e de fatores microecon?micos interligados
Feldmann, Paulo Roberto;
Economia e Sociedade , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-06182009000100004
Abstract: the present paper deals with the relation between geographical conditions in a specific region and the occurrence of innovations. the objective is to analyze the reasons for the backwardness of latin america in matters related to technology development. the article's approach is to observe the largest companies of the region, trying to understand why they almost never are part of the high technology industries. in order to get these explanations, the article mentions many authors that have dedicated themselves to this subject, paying more attention to those who had made comparisons with other regions in the world, specially asia. the aim here was to characterize the geographic circumstances that were decisive to the occurrence of innovations. the results are deeply alarming not only because of the low number of latin american companies that have reached worldwide recognition, but also because, almost always, these few companies came from where the technology content is very low.
Financiamento e democratiza??o do acesso à educa??o superior no Brasil: da deser??o do Estado ao projeto de reforma
Corbucci, Paulo Roberto;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302004000300003
Abstract: this text deals with the financing of higher education in brazil, focusing on the period from the early 90s to present. it assumes that, to some extent, this period has reflected the collapse of the political and economical models in force up to the mid-80s so as to analyze the role assigned to higher education in government programs from the following decade. it then discusses the advance of the private sector from the mid-90s onwards and the supposed dichotomy between higher education and basic schooling. with regard to stricto sensu financing, this paper analyses the share of public and private entities, respectively, and compares the brazilian situation to that of other countries from the organization for economic cooperation and development (oecd). furthermore, based on a case study carried out at the university of brasília (unb), it looks into the possibility of self-funding for federal higher education institutions. finally, it presents the first measures that integrate the higher education reform proposal coordinated by the department of education (mec). as a conclusion, it foresees possible implications and shortcomings of the higher education financing policies implemented these last years.
Comparison of quality of life between hemodialysis patients waiting and not waiting for kidney transplant from a poor region of Brazil
Santos, Paulo Roberto;
Jornal Brasileiro de Nefrologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-28002011000200008
Abstract: introduction: there are few data about the quality of life (qol) level among patients undergoing hemodialysis (hd) and not eligible for kidney transplant. objective: the qol level was compared between hd patients waiting and not waiting for kidney transplant. methods: we included 161 end-stage renal disease patients undergoing hd, during april, 2009. all patients were older than 18 years old, had been on hd at least three months, and had no previous transplantation. to measure qol, the sf-36 was used. we also collected data about death and transplants in the 12 months after april, 2009. qol scores were compared by analysis of variance with covariates. results: patients not awaiting transplantation were older (53.7 versus 36.3 years old; p < 0.001), more often had diabetes (15.8 versus 4.7%; p = 0.032) and hypertension (35.5 versus 12.9%; p < 0.001), and had no lupus (0 versus 4.7%; p = 0.001). they also presented lower creatinine levels (11.5 versus 13.5 mg/dl; p = 0.001) and were submitted to a lower dose of dialysis, estimated by kt/v (1.6 versus 2.0; p = 0.026). patients not awaiting transplant died more often in the following 12 months (21.1 versus 5.9%; p = 0.005). adjusted mean scores were lower among patients not awaiting transplant regarding six dimensions of qol: functional capacity (42.0 versus 53.4; p = 0.022), physical limitation (29.9 versus 49.2; p = 0.030); pain (45.0 versus 64.0; p = 0.003), social aspects (56.3 versus 75.9; p = 0.003), emotional aspects (45.1 versus 79.0; p = 0.001), and mental health (50.1 versus 64.3; p = 0.004). conclusions: patients undergoing hd and not awaiting transplant are at risk of poor qol level, mainly regarding role-emotional and role-physical aspects. we recommend psychological approaches and physical rehabilitation for this group of patients.
Para além do Rio Grande: os impactos da economia paulista sobre O Triangulo Mineiro
Oliveira, Paulo Roberto de;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742008000200010
Abstract: in this work our intention was to investigate the impact of sao paulo's coffee economy on the minas gerais triangle region, during its penetration into the area because of the extension of the mogiana railroad company in 1889. we attempt to understand the impact caused along this coffee railroad in a region where this product almost did not exist, and the changes that occurred to the economic panorama of the region. furthermore we have taken as an example, the city of uberaba, the most important, in this region at that time.

Ramos, Paulo Roberto;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142007000300015
Abstract: in the last 30 years, urban violence in brazil has reached levels that had never been seen before. the theme, which has been approached by several sectors of society, has not been ignored by the brazilian cinema either. this article aims to discuss some issues brought up by contemporary brazilian documentaries on this complex datum of our reality. the following films have been chosen as objects of analysis: news from a personal war (notícias de uma guerra particular, jo?o moreira salles and kátia lund - 1998/1999), bus 174 (?nibus 174, josé padilha - 2002), justice (justi?a, maria augusta ramos - 2004) and falcon: boys of the drug trade (falc?o: meninos do tráfico, mv bill and celso athayde - 2006). these films expose the impact of violence on brazilian society from different angles: the illegal drug trade and its effects on the people directly or indirectly involved with it (news from a personal war and falcon: boys of the drug trade); the brazilian criminal justice and its characters: lawyers, judges, the defendants and their relatives (justice); and violence as an example of uprootedness (bus 174).

Almeida, Paulo Roberto de;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1991, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141991000200012
Abstract: the emerging world order of intellectual properly protection while creating new and stricter multilateral rules for technology transfer, presents several challenges to developing countries. besides the burden of new additional payments of royalties from the south, it also would point to a restraint in the free flow of scientific and technological information from the north, perhaps a new kind of " technological apartheid". developing countries should start from within the adjustment the new order, probably by means of regional programs of technological cooperation, which southern latin-american countries are the best qualified to perform in the framework of the mercosul integration process.
Joaquim Murtinho, banqueiro: notas sobre a experiência do Banco Rio e Mato Grosso (1891-1902)
Queiroz, Paulo Roberto Cimó;
Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-21862010000100006
Abstract: the rio and mato grosso bank, founded in rio de janeiro in 1891 and closed in 1902, was the first bank to operate in mato grosso. based upon documents of the bank itself, this paper aims at tracing its trajectory and discussing its connections with economics and politics of mato grosso. it follows that the bank's action in this state corresponded to a broad plan and contributed to the process of modernization and economic growth - although this growth, being limited to primary-export activities, has been characteristically exclusive. it is also suggested how economic activities, in mato grosso, could be affected by political infighting.
Entre a guarda e o vi?o: a madre nas cantigas de amigo galego-portuguesas
Roberto Sodré,Paulo;
Temas medievales , 2004,
Abstract: after alfred jeanroy stated at the end of the nineteenth century that the role of the mothers in the cantigas de amigo is mostly mute, several researchers have explored the possibility of refuting this idea. in 1934 manuel rodríguez lapa was one of the first in observing that madres play the chief role in some of the cantigas. in rip cohen′s critical edition of the cantigas de amigo of 2003, not only the lover but also the mother are included among the speakers.the active role played by these character suggests mentalities and attitudes which have received only little attention from the specialists. this article analizes the representation of the mother figure in the cantigas de amigo by comparing it with medieval moral treatises and jurisprudence which determined the women′s accepted behavior throughout the middle ages.
