Key Reduction of McEliece's Cryptosystem Using List Decoding
Morgan Barbier,Barreto S. L. M. Paulo
Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: Different variants of the code-based McEliece cryptosystem were pro- posed to reduce the size of the public key. All these variants use very structured codes, which open the door to new attacks exploiting the underlying structure. In this paper, we show that the dyadic variant can be designed to resist all known attacks. In light of a new study on list decoding algorithms for binary Goppa codes, we explain how to increase the security level for given public keysizes. Using the state-of-the-art list decoding algorithm instead of unique decoding, we exhibit a keysize gain of about 4% for the standard McEliece cryptosystem and up to 21% for the adjusted dyadic variant.
Decoding square-free Goppa codes over $\F_p$
Paulo S. L. M. Barreto,Rafael Misoczki,Richard Lindner
Computer Science , 2011,
Abstract: We propose a new, efficient non-deterministic decoding algorithm for square-free Goppa codes over $\F_p$ for any prime $p$. If the code in question has degree $t$ and the average distance to the closest codeword is at least $(4/p)t + 1$, the proposed decoder can uniquely correct up to $(2/p)t$ errors with high probability. The correction capability is higher if the distribution of error magnitudes is not uniform, approaching or reaching $t$ errors when any particular error value occurs much more often than others or exclusively. This makes the method interesting for (semantically secure) cryptosystems based on the decoding problem for permuted and punctured Goppa codes.
Smoking-attributable mortality and years of potential life lost in 16 Brazilian capitals, 2003: a prevalence-based study

BMC Public Health , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2458-9-206
Abstract: The Smoking-Attributable Mortality, Morbidity and Economic Costs (SAMMEC) software was used to estimate the smoking attributable mortality (SAM) in 15 Brazilian State Capitals and the Federal District for the year 2003. Smoking prevalence and mortality data of people aged 35 years or older were obtained for each city from the Brazilian Household Survey on Non Communicable Diseases Risk Factors (2002–2003) and from the Brazilian Mortality System (2003), respectively. In 2003, of the 177,543 deaths of persons aged 35 years and older 24,222 (13.64%) were attributable to cigarette smoking. This total represents 18.08% of all male deaths (n = 16,896) and 8.71% (n = 7,326) of all female deaths in these cities. The four leading causes of smoking-attributable death were chronic airways obstruction (4,419 deaths), ischemic heart disease (4,417 deaths), lung cancer (3,682 deaths), and cerebrovascular disease (3,202 deaths). Cigarette smoking accounted for 419,935 years of potential life lost (YPLL) (279,990 YPLL for men and 139,945 YPLL for women) in the same period.Tobacco use caused one out of five male deaths and one out of ten female deaths in the sixteen cities in 2003. Four leading causes of smoking attributable deaths (ischemic heart disease, chronic airways obstruction, lung cancer and cerebrovascular disease) accounted for 64.9% of SAM. Effective and comprehensive actions must be taken in order to slow this epidemic in Brazil.Scientific evidence of harm caused by smoking has been accumulating for over 200 years, at first in relation to cancers of the lip and mouth, and then in relation to vascular diseases and lung cancer [1]. Epidemiologic studies have estimated disease risks associated with various smoking patterns. At present, nearly 40 diseases or causes of death are known to be positively associated with cigarette smoking [1]. As a result of these findings, in the next 50 years, tobacco use is projected to cause nearly 450 million deaths worldwide [2]. It is expe
Manter ou suspender a revacina??o BCG em adolescentes
Camargos,Paulo A M; Barreto,Maurício L; Alvim,Cristina; Bedran,Renata;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102006000200019
Abstract: bcg revaccination was introduced in brazil in the mid-90's but no study has evaluated vaccine coverage through direct assessment of the scar. bcg scars were assessed in 2,785 public school adolescents, aged 13 to 14 years, in southeastern brazil, between september 2001 and may 2002. the prevalence rate of revaccination was 64.3% (95% ci: 62.5-66.0). despite the efforts to implement and sustain revaccination, continuing this practice should be reevaluated by public health authorities due to the lack of evidence on its effectiveness.

Revista da Associa??o Médica Brasileira , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-42302003000300029
Abstract: objective: to assess whether, in brazil, the number of years on dialysis treatment in end-stage renal disease (esrd) patients, with and without diabetes mellitus, relates to mortality risk. methods: analysis of data from the ministry of health of brazil of 25.952 patients older than 18 years who were on dialytic treatment in april 1997. death cases that occurred from april 1997 to july 2000 were recorded. cox models were used to estimate the relative risk (rr) of the association between years on dialysis and mortality risk. results: the mortality risk was significantly lower in patients on dialysis between 3 and <10 years as compared with 1 to <2 years (rr between 0.78 and 0.88). with adjustments for age and diabetes the effect of years on dialysis was reduced. in diabetics (n=2.952) the adjusted mortality risk showed a trend to decrease with more years on dialysis. conclusions: in brazil, the mortality risk for esrd patients decreases with the increasing number of years on dialysis up to approximately 10 years. this finding can be partially explained by the lower mean age and prevalence of diabetes mellitus in patients with more years on dialysis treatment. the effect of years on dialysis on the mortality risk seems to be stronger in patients with diabetes.

Scaling efficient code-based cryptosystems for embedded platforms
Felipe P. Biasi,Paulo S. L. M. Barreto,Rafael Misoczki,Wilson V. Ruggiero
Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: We describe a family of highly efficient codes for cryptographic purposes and dedicated algorithms for their manipulation. Our proposal is especially tailored for highly constrained platforms, and surpasses certain conventional and post-quantum proposals (like RSA and NTRU, respectively) according to most if not all efficiency metrics.

Brazilian Journal of Oceanography , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-87592006000300006
Abstract: laje de santos marine state park has been pointed out as a site of high marine diversity. in spite of its importance to conservation of marine biota no results of investigations about its marine biodiversity have been published. the aim of this work was to characterize the subtidal seaweed flora of this marine park. samplings were performed by scuba diving: a qualitative one that included the subtidal zone down to 26 m depth and other quantitative at two pre-determined depths, 10 and 20 m. among the 129 taxa identified, 5 species were identified for the first time for the s?o paulo state, 3 for the brazilian coast and 1 for the south atlantic ocean. the most abundant algae were sargassum vulgare and turf composed by geniculate coralline and filamentous groups. the frequency of occurrence of taxa revealed that most of species are restricted to frequencies less than 20 % in all samples. the analyses of the subtidal marine benthic algal flora indicate the marine state park of laje de santos as a site of elevated species richness and that its floristic composition is related to a benthic community structure dominated by turf-forming groups and population of s. vulgare.
