Segments of competition in south brazilian wineries

Abstract: the international restructuring process in the beverage sector reached the winemaking business in the 1990s, changing its panorama. increasing competitive pressure is a characteristic of this period with significant impact in regions such as the countries belonging to the mercosul block. to support firm strategies and public policies, the goal of this study was to identify the competition segments in winemaking in rio grande do sul, the southern state of brazil, and in a specific form to propose a typology of wineries based on the industrial organization literature. the data used are from the state wineries data bank of rio grande do sul, which were submitted to multivariate statistical analysis, integrating a cluster and principal components analysis in a group of 381 observations. the results showed the existence of two factors, one related to scale and diversification, and the other related to the quality of the products and of the raw material. from these factors, six groups of wineries were identified that can be named segments of competition in winemaking. group 1 is characterized by quality and specialization; group 2, by a large production scale and diversification; group 3, by a low added value; group 4, by a micro production scale; and groups 5 and 6, by a low added value, small scale, and specialization.

Abstract: the rural familiar agroindustry is an alternative in the search for new niche markets, using the greater diversity of existing products and product differentiation by transforming them inside the property. its implementation is considered an effective alternative as policy of rural development, but despite all efforts there are many limitations in this sector especially in sanitary legislation. quality is built on the agroindustries by looking not only at a physical process, but also relying on social and cultural aspects, considering personal efforts in making the products, dedication, tradition and artisanal "ways to make", which bring the colonial touch. the theory of the convention is based on mutual recognition and collective of wide quality of the product, and was used to explain how interactions are worked among producers at metropolitan porto alegre area regarding production rules or "ways to make" the production process.
A influência de fatores econ?micos, institucionais e sociais na inser??o de agroindústrias rurais em Santa Catarina

Abstract: the rural agro-industries (ra) are understood as a strategic option for farmers. however, there are several factors which impacts negatively on the success of those institutions, unities. moreover, there are several types of these organizations. the study, aiming to meet the reality of ras, seeks to quantify the influence of the economics, institutional and social factors in promoting their inclusion in the market as well as verifying whether this influence occurs differently to each the type of ra. as theoretical basis, we have used the following theories: neoclassical economic and industrial organization, new institutional economics, economic sociology. the research covers the small and the mid-sized rural agro-industries, and the sample involved 40 agro-industries. a structured interview was conducted to collect the data. through a regression model, we have attempted to quantify the influence of each dimension, and the results show that the economic and institutional dimensions have similar influences to the insertion of ras in the market and are approximately two times more influential than the social dimension, when regarding all the ras of the sample. when the sample is stratified by ras types, the conclusion is that there are different influences of the dimensions of the study for different types of ras.

Apesar das distintasdinamicas territoriais e setoriais reveladas, os resultados convergem para ratificar a importanciada agroindústria rural como estratégia de agrega o de valor e desenvolvimento rural.English The paper discusses the added value in the Brazilian rural agro-industries. The information isderived from tabulations based on Agricultural Census microdata, which allowed us to constructa sectorial and macro-regional comparison. Among the wide set of manufacturing and processing activities measured by the census, we selected nine processed products in therural establishments (aguardente, jams and jellies, cassava flour, corn meal, bread, cheeseand cream cheese, rapadura, sausage and tapioca). The discussion focuses on the interactionbetween the quantitative results from variables such as production value, trade value andvalue-added, and the particularities of the different economical, political and institutionalcontexts found both in the macro-regions and value chains. Despite the different sectorialand territorial dynamics, the results support the importance of the rural agroindustry asstrategic activity for adding value and rural development.Espa ol El artículo analiza el valor a adido en la agroindustria rural brasile a. Abstract: the economic performance of the brazilian swine and swine meat production was based on technological and organizational innovations, in which the contracts play an important role in the supply chain coordination. the goal of this research is to characterize the transaction among swine producers and slaughters and meat processors in santa catarina, brazil, and the contract structure of incentives and controls which supports this transaction. the research technique employed is a multiple case study, with 19 interviews with swine producers and the analysis of 12 contracts. the results show an organizational diversity and its dynamics. the contract incentives and controls are structured to reach economic and efficiency goals.
O comércio potencial brasileiro de carne bovina no contexto de integra??o regional

Abstract: this study analyses the brazilian beef exportation potential considering the supposition of future agreements of regional integration. the countries or blocks that were chosen are the european union (eu), the north american free trade agreement (nafta) countries, the commonwealth of independent states, the popular republic of china (prc) and japan. to analyze the meat sector exportation potential, four methodological generalizations are developed: the importing potential of the mentioned countries, the calculus of the evolution in the revealed advantage index of brazilian exportations and its main competitors, bibliographical research of the main existing trade barriers and the calculus of the regional orientation index. the results concerning the importing potential indicate that the european union (eu) consists of a very attractive market to brazilian beef. the results of the calculus of comparative advantages reveal that brazil has a higher competitivity in meat sector and it increasing in the period between 1990 and 2003. when considering the competitors inside each block or country, the european union shows up as the major competitor. as far as the imposed trade barriers, these come out, in a general way, as extremely high and sometimes representing a blockage. thus, the brazilian meat sector would be largely improved if these barriers were eliminated. finally, on the last relation, we can verify the high level of acceptance of brazilian beef exportation to those blocks that do not have impeditive sanitary barriers. nevertheless, when crossing the results obtained to the sector one can observe that from the accomplishment of inter-regional free trade agreements, via mercosur or through bilateral agreements with the blocks or countries considered in this study, would bring real profits to the brazilian meat sector.

Abstract: there's a growing concern about the need for production and consumption of healthier food, without pesticides and chemical fertilizers. the practice of organic agriculture appears in this context, but still shows little assessed results in the academic and scientific context. thus, this research is aimed at the diagnoses of organic production of citrus in the region of caí valley, in southern brazil. initially eight producers were selected, all already converted to the organic production system. to carry out the research, semi-structured surveys were applied, seeking the diagnoses of technical and environmental aspects. the organic producers have shown to be satisfied with the organic production system. moreover, show good knowledge about the environment, plants, soil and agrobiological processes, which is possible technical events and meetings, between these of the ecocitrus cooperative. the constant sharing of experiences among organic producers has improved their technical qualification, besides providing better awareness in the political, economic and social aspects.

Abstract: Le memorie dei coloni ritraggono la realtà coloniale, testimoniando la progressiva iscrizione dei loro corpi all’interno di un territorio già segnato dal potere coloniale e che loro contribuiranno a segnare in questo senso, una progressiva presa di coscienza, attraverso i discorsi, le pratiche, gli oggetti e i simboli, del proprio ruolo di “civilizzatori”. Se le cerimonie organizzate all’uopo dalle autorità coloniali e la sistemazione nei poderi furono le prime fasi di adattamento alla nuova situazione e all’alterità, il lavoro di valorizzazione delle terre dei poderi fu il più importante strumento di risoluzione materiale e culturale di quella situazione critica. Se l’alterità etnica è assente o fa solo da sfondo alle memorie (che quasi non nominano la popolazione locale), al contrario estremamente vivo è il ricordo dell’ordine coloniale iscritto nel territorio: i simboli del potere coloniale (la via Balbia, i villaggi agricoli), i simboli della conquista (la croce e i monumenti ai caduti fascisti). La situazione coloniale, preannunciata dai discorsi delle autorità e dal richiamo alla missione civilizzatrice, è ritrovata iscritta nel territorio e, infine, incarnata dai coloni stessi.
