Materials Research , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-14392006000200010
Abstract: the effect of non-random nuclei location and the efficiency of microstructural descriptors in assessing such a situation are studied. cellular automata simulation of recrystallization in two dimensions is carried out to simulate microstrutural evolution for nuclei distribution ranging from a periodic arrangement to clusters of nuclei. the simulation results are compared in detail with microstrutural descriptors normally used to follow transformation evolution. it is shown that the contiguity is particularly relevant to detect microstructural deviations from randomness. this work focuses on recrystallization but its results are applicable to any nucleation and growth transformation.

Abstract: cellular automata simulation of recrystallization in two dimensions is carried out. the simulated microstrutural evolution is compared in detail with the predictions from mathematically exact analytical theories considering both kinetic and geometrical aspects. very good agreement is observed between the cellular automata simulation and the theoretical results. moreover, the simulated data is used to test new expressions recently derived to describe the evolution of the interfaces between recrystallized grains. this work focuses on recrystallization but its results are applicable to any nucleation and growth transformation.

Abstract: the piraquara river basin (upper igua?u river basin - brazil) was studied as an ecological system throughout a complete seasonal cycle, comprising the rainy and dry season. analyzes of 16 physical and chemical water variables (dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, temperature, ph, conductivity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, ortophosphates, nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, reagent silicate, total suspended solids, chlorophyll - a, flow velocity and depth) showed correlations between water composition and watershed physiographic features, and the principal component analysis allowed to evidence spatial gradients and seasonal differences. the sampling points were clustered in patches with homogeneous behavior, according to ecologycal concepts: patch 1, with strong influence of serra do mar mountains; patch 2, medium course, under piraquara dam influence and patch 3, under wetlands influence. two main factors of serial discontinuity were identified: the piraquara dam effect and the influence of wetlands. the watershed zoning based on limnological characteristics seeks to subsidize research and biomonitoring for this public springs area.

Abstract: in the crop-livestock integration system, improper oat management can result in low biomass yield. this study aimed to evaluate the effect of cutting management systems on the biomass yield of five oat cultivars with potential use in the crop-livestock integration system. a completely randomized blocks design with four replications, in a split-plot scheme, was used. the plots were represented by the oat cultivars preta comum, iapar 61, ipr 126, fapa 2, and fundacep fapa 43. the preta comum cultivar features a short cycle, while the others have a long one. the sub-plots were represented by the following cutting systems: one single cut in the flowering stage, one cut in the vegetative and other in the flowering stage, two cuts in the vegetative and other in the flowering stage, and three cuts in the vegetative and other in the flowering stage. the long cycle cultivars (iapar 61, ipr 126, fapa 2, and fundacep fapa 43) reached high forage yield, without affecting the subsequent fodder yield for soil covering, pointing out its ability to be used in crop-livestock systems. the management systems with three cuts in the vegetative stage maximizes the forage yield, however, concerning fodder yield, the best results were obtained by using up to two cuts in the vegetative stage, or a single one in the flowering stage.

Abstract: priming is a technique for controlling seed hydration that allows activation of germination metabolic processes but avoiding the emission of the primary root and providing uniformity and better plant performance in the field. the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydropriming on germination, emergence and seedling development in gherkins. gherkin seeds of the do norte and nordeste cultivars, represented by three lots, were primed at 20 °c on paper towels until they reached 33.5% (nordeste) or 36.6% (do norte) water content. part of the seeds were dried at room temperature (28-34 ° c) and a relative humidity of 45-55% until water content was 7.0 to 8.5%. the physiological potential of the seeds was determined in the laboratory by evaluating germination rate and speed. later, the percentage and emergence speed index, height and dry mass of seedlings 14 days after sowing were determined in the greenhouse. hydropriming benefitted the germination and vigor characteristics of both cultivars.

Abstract: parasitological analysis was carried out during 1982 and 1983 in 3,076 children aged under 7 years, who were enrolled in 52 day nurseries supported by municipal prefecture of s?o paulo and 50 food handlers (cooking employees) working at 18 day nurseries. the prevalence of giardia lamblia infection was studied according to sex, age group and seasonal variations, and attained 32.80% among children and 4.0% among adult population. the occurrence of giardiasis was most frequent in age group corresponding to 1-4 years old. the study of seasonal variations showed that, in 1982, the prevalence of g. lamblia was high in the autumn and in the spring and, in 1983, giardiasis was more prevalent in the autumn and in the summer. statistical analysis indicated non association between sex and prevalence for giardia infection, and there was also no significative difference on the distribution of g. lamblia prevalence in the four regions analysed in the present study (p > 0.05). the most probable mode of acquisition of giardia infection, in the nurseries analysed in the present study was person-to-person, as factors, like environmental contamination and others, associated with the spreading of giardiasis through water, reported in other countries, are unlike from those verified in our municipality. on the other hand, there is evidence of no significant role of food handlers in giardia transmission, because the rate of infection in this group was very low.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of spacing between lines in yeld of biomass and grain cultivars in common and IPA-BULK 1 pearl millet. The experiment was installed at the Experimental Farm of Unioeste, located on Guará Line, Marechal Candido Rondon – PR city. The experimental design was randomized blocks in factorial scheme 2x4, with four replications. In the treatments were used two genotypes (Usual IPA and BULK-1), conducted at four spacings (20, 40, 60 e 80cm) in plots of 12m2. It was used as seeding rate of 25 kg ha-1 seeds for all treatments. Sowing was done manually on October 10, 2008. We evaluated the productivity of biomass and grain, and the spacing significantly influenced the production of biomass. It was observed that the biomass decreased with increasing the spacing between lines. The spacing of 20cm between rows was the, on average, increased production of green mass and dry mass at the stage of grain paste with 50.84 ton ha-1 and 17.60 ton ha-1 respectively. There was a significant interaction between the factors cultivar and spacing for the production of dry matter in the physiological maturity and grain production. In general, the cultivars has high yield of biomass and grain, so it can be grown in the region of Marechal Candido Rondon – PR, it is an important alternative for the soil cover in tillage system and also as the power source of animals feeding.
The Influence of Emotions on the Endowment Effect

Revista Brasileira de Finan?as , 2009,
Abstract: According to prospect theory, individuals with loss aversion would tend to attribute a higher value to a good once their ownership over it had been established. Such tendency would cause reluctance to trade the good, even if an equivalent one were offered in exchange. Thaler (1980) named this phenomenon endowment effect. In this article, we present a review of the literature about the topic, which has been one of the most investigated themes in the relatively recent eld of behavioral nance. Adopting Knetsch’s research model (1989), we conducted two experiments in order to investigate the phenomenon in a Brazilian sample, speci cally testing the in uence of emotions on its manifestation. The results replicate ndings for the endowment effect, and suggest that negative emotions attenuate the observed effects. Positive emotions, however, did not have any detectable in uence over the phenomenon.
