Abstract: this investigation aimed at the detection of mycobacterium tuberculosis (mtb) in the sputum of suruí indian subjects from amazonia, brazil. polymerase chain reaction analyses were positive for12 samples, five of which were also culture-positive (n = 147). four mtb genotypes were identified, one of which showed resistance to rifampicin and isoniazid. the study also highlighted one village complex as of particular importance, considering the relatively high number of tuberculosis cases reported and of mtb isolates obtained.
Warming Power of CO2 and H2O: Correlations with Temperature Changes  [PDF]
Paulo Cesar Soares
International Journal of Geosciences (IJG) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/ijg.2010.13014
Abstract: The dramatic and threatening environmental changes announced for the next decades are the result of models whose main drive factor of climatic changes is the increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Although taken as a premise, the hypothesis does not have verifiable consistence. The comparison of temperature changes and CO2 changes in the atmosphere is made for a large diversity of conditions, with the same data used to model climate changes. Correlation of historical series of data is the main approach. CO2 changes are closely related to temperature. Warmer seasons or triennial phases are followed by an atmosphere that is rich in CO2, reflecting the gas solving or exsolving from water, and not photosynthesis activity. Interannual correlations between the variables are good. A weak dominance of temperature changes precedence, relative to CO2 changes, indicate that the main effect is the CO2 increase in the atmosphere due to temperature rising. Decreasing temperature is not followed by CO2 decrease, which indicates a different route for the CO2 capture by the oceans, not by gas re-absorption. Monthly changes have no correspondence as would be expected if the warming was an important absorption-radiation effect of the CO2 increase. The anthropogenic wasting of fossil fuel CO2 to the atmosphere shows no relation with the temperature changes even in an annual basis. The absence of immediate relation between CO2 and temperature is evidence that rising its mix ratio in the atmosphere will not imply more absorption and time residence of energy over the Earth surface. This is explained because band absorption is nearly all done with historic CO2 values. Unlike CO2, water vapor in the atmosphere is rising in tune with temperature changes, even in a monthly scale. The rising energy absorption of vapor is reducing the outcoming long wave radiation window and amplifying warming regionally and in a different way around the globe.
Um imperialismo possível: fluxos migratórios e estratégias colonialistas na Europa mediterranea (1870-1914)
Gon?alves, Paulo Cesar;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742011000200016
Abstract: this paper analyses some of the various implications of the migratory flow from the main countries supplying workers during the period known as the new emigration: italy, spain and portugal. considering their peculiarities, the objective is to identify the strategies of each country that transformed this movement into a factor of economic development: conquest of markets, creation and promotion of colonies, use and protection of remittances from emigrated ones. with its kingdom in formation, and the largest source of emigrants, italy had naturally followed the paths that revealed emigration as one of the agents of national prosperity, in contrast to portugal and spain.
Anelídeos poliquetas da plataforma continental norte do Estado de S?o Paulo: I - padr?es de densidade e diversidade específica
Paiva, Paulo Cesar de;
Boletim do Instituto Oceanográfico , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0373-55241993000100006
Abstract: density and diversity patterns of the polychaetous annelids from the northern continental shelf of s?o paulo state, brazil, were studied. polychaetous densities were higher in the inner shelf, mainly in the southern transect. temporal variations were observed at the northern and central transects in the 20 and 35 m isobaths, with higher summer values. diversity values were lower in summer and higher during winter in the outer shelf. the inner shelf presented more complex diversity patterns with seasonal fluctuations in lower depths. muddy sediments presented higher densities; diversity and richness were higher in fine sand sediments. coarser sediments presented the highest values of evenness but low diversity. the higher diversity values in the shallowest stations were due to the higher number of species and in the deepest stations to the great evenness.

Condiciones de vida, situación de la salud y disponibilidad de servicios de salud en la frontera de Brasil: un enfoque geográfico
Peiter, Paulo Cesar;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007001400013
Abstract: the aim of this study was to identify critical health care areas along the brazilian border. the distribution of health resources was analyzed by municipality and border area in 1999-2000 and subsequently analyzed according to living conditions, health status, geographic accessibility, and other aspects of the border dynamics. secondary data were used from large national health and geographic databases, complemented by primary data collected in the field. geographic information systems were used to analyze the data and to produce maps. the border area was heterogeneous in terms of the above-mentioned characteristics. the municipalities along the northern portion of the border strip showed the most unfavorable conditions and thus constitute the most critical area for health care. the central portion showed an intermediate situation, with a balanced proportion of sub-regions in critical versus non-critical situations. the southernmost portion showed a satisfactory situation in all its sub-regions. health care heterogeneity along the border showed the need for a specific focus, taking the different sub-regions and border dynamics into account.
Violências, sistemas violentos e o horizonte testemunhal
Endo, Paulo Cesar;
Psicologia: Ciência e Profiss?o , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-98932009000100004
Abstract: this paper discusses the contemporary forms of engenderment and opposition to violent expressions in conflict resolution. the focus of this work is the discussion about the institutional and urban violence in brazil in the last decades, in which the witness emerges as a political, psychological and social expression in addition to the increase of lynchings, since the 1980s, and the homicides carried out by agents of the state, as well as the rising of the homicide rates in brazil as a way of resolving personal conflicts. at the heart of this out-of-control and excessive violence, there is a set of values that are nurtured and brutally practiced. these values are based on the dispute between bullies and alpha males, who intend to justify their position in a violent system at any cost, a system whose preservation depends on the demand for more and more bullies who wish to put their own lives and the lives of others at risk. so, this fragile virility appears as a subjective cell capable of preserving violent systems.
Indicadores de altera??o hidrológica no Alto Rio Paraná: interven??es humanas e implica??es na dinamica do ambiente fluvial
Rocha, Paulo Cesar;
Sociedade & Natureza , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1982-45132010000100014
Abstract: in this paper were study five components of the flow regimen with ecological importance on fluvial ecosystems were studied. the magnitude, duration, timing, frequency and rates change of flow. thirty-two parameters were used as the indicators of hydrological alteration (iha). from diary hydrologic data of porto s?o josé gauge station in the high paraná river, were calculate the mean values of the indicators, coupled with the standard deviation and minimum and maximum absolute values for the pre and post-dams periods was calculated, with the aim of comparing and evaluating the magnitude of the observed alterations of the flow regimen. for it's, was applied the method the "range of variability approach" (rva). the most significant results suggest changes in low-flows related indicators and are largely a reflection of the control of debts by upstream reservoirs. such indicators presented increase in magnitude, accompanied by declining in frequency. other changes in the magnitude of the stream flow are related to the use and occupation processes of the basin. hydrologic changes have changed the behavior erosive-deposicional, sediment transport and primary production in the river and adjacent fluvial plain.
