Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-37132006000300013
Abstract: objective: the aim of this study was to present the evolution of four patients presenting pulmonary alveolar proteinosis and treated at the state university of londrina school of medicine. we focus on the importance of whole-lung lavage as the treatment of choice. methods: a retrospective study of four patients, three females and one male, 22 to 34 years old, presenting similar histories of progressive dyspnea and dry cough. the final diagnosis was established through open-lung biopsy. three of the patients underwent whole-lung lavage in the department of surgery. the procedures were performed under general anesthesia and using a double-lumen endotracheal tube. results: one patient presented spontaneous regression of the pulmonary alveolar proteinosis without the need for whole-lung lavage. in the other three cases, the number of lavages varied: in one patient, a single unilateral lavage resulted in complete remission of the bilateral process; in another patient, three lavages yielded no significant improvement; in the remaining patient, four lavages provided intervening periods of transient improvement. conclusion: in the cases evaluated, whole-lung lavage proved an efficient treatment for pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. although some patients presented a certain resistance to the procedure, it might lead to complete remission of the disease in others.
Idéias, interesses e mudan?as institucionais
Tapia, Jorge R. B.;Gomes, Eduardo R.;
Tempo Social , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20702008000100012
Abstract: this article discusses the relations between institutions, interests and ideas, taking as its reference point experiences in social concertation in europe and welfare system reforms in latin america in the 1990s. recognizing that the current debate over these reforms has incorporated the importance of the cognitive dimension of political processes as a way of building more complex and adequate approaches to the phenomena in question, we take a different approach to previous analyses, arguing that the emphasis given up to now to the role of ideas is insufficient to explain either the nature and diffusion of the processes of economic and social reforms, or their legitimacy and political support. the process of adopting ideas has to produce results that are positively assessed and offer answers - whether consensual or not - to questions deemed central to the public agenda. in addition, there is also a complex process of policy learning and mimicking that allows for better understanding of complex developments, expressing the fact that these elements cannot be left out of the explanations, since they may add new dimensions to studies of economic and social reforms inspired by the role of institutions or by political competition.
Linfoma intravascular de células B grandes: hallazgos clínicos y morfológicos en un caso con desenlace fatal
Tapia E,Oscar; Jiménez P,Paula;
Revista médica de Chile , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0034-98872012000200012
Abstract: intravascular large b cell lymphoma is a rare subtype of large cell lymphoma that is characterized by the proliferation of lymphoid cells within the lumina of small blood vessels. we report a 61-year-old male presenting paresis of both lower limbs, confusion and a history of weight loss. magnetic resonance and cat imaging studies showed multiple images of brain and cerebellar infarctions. twenty days after admission, the patient died and the postmortem study demonstrated a multisystem intravascular large b cell lymphoma.

Antimicrobial peptides: a new class of antimalarial drugs?
Nuno Vale,Paula Gomes
Frontiers in Pharmacology , 2014, DOI: 10.3389/fphar.2014.00275
Abstract: A range of antimicrobial peptides (AMP) exhibit activity on malaria parasites, Plasmodium spp, in their blood or mosquito stages, or both. These peptides include a diverse array of both natural and synthetic molecules varying greatly in size, charge, hydrophobicity and secondary structure features. Along with an overview of relevant literature reports regarding AMP that display antiplasmodial activity, this review makes a few considerations about those molecules as a potential new class of antimalarial drugs.
As rela??es de género no espa?o da educa??o física - a percep??o de alunos e alunas

Revista Portuguesa de Ciências do Desporto , 2008,
Abstract: the purpose of this study was to analyse how students, boys and girls, observe and classify the gender relations in the physical education (pe) mixed classes. the analysed data came by from 60 semi-structured interviews from oporto secondary school students (30 boys and 30 girls). an inductive analysis and interpretation of the data was carried out following the information treatment by the program qsrnvivo. the results suggest that boys and girls analyse differently the gender relations in pe classes. half of the female students understand that the relations are not good, expressing some complains about their colleagues? behaviours and attitudes which bother them offend them and lead them to a disinvestment in the pe activities.

Abstract: Socially-responsible values and attitudes in Chilean universitystudentsGracia Navarro,1 Paula Boero,2 Gladys Jiménez,3 Liliana Tapia,4 Reinier Hollander,5 Arturo Escobar,6 Margarita Baeza,7 álvaro EspinaABSTRACTAs a contribution to comprehension of the socially responsible behaviour in college students, this study tries to identify their values and attitudes towards social responsibility; to determine differences according to gender, promotion and career areas and to identify the relationship among values, attitudes towards social responsibility and a socially responsible behaviour. It surveyed 2.876 students from six Chilean universities by CAVSR and CACSR (Project MECESUP UCO0303, 2004-2008).Results show a very positive and significant relation among values, attitudes and socially responsible behaviour, commitment with values and attitudes that are closer to college student experiences andless commitment with those linked to social wellbeing, citizenship, democracy and participation. There are significant differences according to gender, promotion and career areas. As a conclusion, there is a need to stimulate educational practices that activate less preponderant values and promote positive attitudes towards them in order to achieve a social responsibility full exercise.Keywords: values, attitude, social responsibility, college students1 Universidad de Concepción.
Cyclization-activated Prodrugs
Paula Gomes,Nuno Vale,Rui Moreira
Molecules , 2007, DOI: 10.3390/12112484
Abstract: Many drugs suffer from an extensive first-pass metabolism leading to druginactivation and/or production of toxic metabolites, which makes them attractive targets forprodrug design. The classical prodrug approach, which involves enzyme-sensitive covalentlinkage between the parent drug and a carrier moiety, is a well established strategy toovercome bioavailability/toxicity issues. However, the development of prodrugs that canregenerate the parent drug through non-enzymatic pathways has emerged as an alternativeapproach in which prodrug activation is not influenced by inter- and intraindividualvariability that affects enzymatic activity. Cyclization-activated prodrugs have beencapturing the attention of medicinal chemists since the middle-1980s, and reached maturityin prodrug design in the late 1990s. Many different strategies have been exploited in recentyears concerning the development of intramoleculary-activated prodrugs spanning fromanalgesics to anti-HIV therapeutic agents. Intramolecular pathways have also a key role intwo-step prodrug activation, where an initial enzymatic cleavage step is followed by acyclization-elimination reaction that releases the active drug. Supporting ontology development with ODEd
Mian, Paula Gomes;Falbo, Ricardo de Almeida;
Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-65002003000300005
Abstract: ontologies are becoming an important mechanism to build information systems. however, ontology construction is not a simple task. so, it is necessary to provide tools that support ontology development. this paper presents oded, an ontology editor that supports the definition of concepts, relations and properties, using graphic representations, besides promoting automatic inclusion of some classes of axioms and derivation of object infrastructures from ontologies. oded was built to support ontology development in ode, a software engineering environment (see), so that ode can be used as a domain-oriented see. thus, oded aims to partially support an ontology-based domain engineering process.
