Abstract: Recombinant plant-derived pharmaceuticals have been investigated for the last two decades and some products will soon be brought to market. Since veterinary pharmaceuticals seem to be the front-runners of plant-derived vaccines, we selected one model subunit vaccine, the structural capsid protein VP60 against rabbit haemorrhagic disease, and ana-lyzed the expression of three different sequences representing the vp60 open reading frame in potato plants. The gen-eration of antigenic VP60 molecules in the leaf and tuber tissue of potato was tremendously enhanced by replacing virus-derived sequences with plant-optimized codons. In order to identify potentially undesirable alterations in the composition of these genetically modified food components, we studied their nutrient composition and nutritional value in comparison to two parental conventional breeding varieties (Albatros and Desiree). The largest differences in nutrient composition were found between the two conventional breeds and between conventional Desiree and its near-isogenic genetically modified potato plant, indicating that genetic modification as well as conventional breeding can influence nutrient composition. Nevertheless, most parameters of nutritional value seemed to be more affected by conventional breeding than by genetic modification.
Studies on Two Exoenzymes Which Lyse Wine-Spoiling Bacteria  [PDF]

Advances in Microbiology (AiM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aim.2014.49059

Microorganisms play an important role in the conversion of grape juice into wine. Different species of yeast are mainly responsible for the production of ethanol. Lactic acid bacteria also occur regularly in must or wine. They are mostly undesirable due to their capacity to produce wine-spoiling compounds. Especially strains of Lactobacillus brevis are able to produce biogenic amines as well as precursors of ethyl carbamate and different off-flavours (N-heterocycles, volatile phenols). By excessive formation of acetic acid some lactobacilli may even induce slow/stuck grape juice fermentations. In conventional winemaking, additions of sulphite or lysozyme are used to inhibit the growth of spoilage microorganisms. There is a strong interest in finding alternatives, because of the reduced activity of lysozyme in the wine milieu, a limited growth-inhibiting activity against lactic acid bacteria, and some health risks described regarding the application of sulphite. We found that a culture supernatant of Streptomyces albidoflavus B 578 lysed all bacteria previously isolated from must and wine samples (Acetobacter sp., Lactobacillus sp., Leuconostoc sp., Oenococcus oeni, Pediococcus sp., Staphylococcus sp.) including 35 strains of L. brevis. Two bacteriolytic

Examination of Blood Samples of the Eurasian Otter (Lutra Lutra)
Knig C.,Knig U.
IUCN Otter Specialist Group Bulletin , 1998,
Abstract: Heparin and EDTA blood samples were analysed from 14 Eurasian otters. Reflotron and Vettest 8008 were used to identify ALB, ALPK, ALT, AMYL, AST, BUN, Ca, CK, CREA, GLU, Mg, BIL, GGT and CHOL. The electrolytes (Na, K and Cl) were measured by using VetLyte. The QBC haematology system gave a profile for HKT, Thrombo, Leuko, Gran and Lymph/Mono. These values were compared with those from dogs, cats and the North American river otter (Lutra canadensis). Several heparin parameters and a leucocytosis recorded in four individuals indicated that the otters were considerably stressed.

Abstract: this work proposes an initial theoretical reflection on comparative literary studies in latin america in order to move towards establishing some basic premises. from this theoretical framework we will examine the significance of the reelaboration of the characters from shakespeare’s tempest, especially caliban and ariel, which rodó undertakes in his essay ariel. the hypothesis advanced is that rodó makes explicit an intertextual dialogue with the english author but that the symbolic signification that he assigns to the figures of ariel and caliban is linked critically to the historical reinterpretation that ernest renan proposes in his drama caliban…, written some years after the populist-worker uprising of 1871 in paris. rodó shares renan’s alarm as to the consequences of modernization and democratization in their respective societies but he disagrees with his reactionary and aristocratic ideology. a comparative analysis is proposed in order to specify the signification of ariel and caliban in rodó’s essay and their symbolic function in the service of a critical vision of reality in an underlying and profoundly committed latin american project.
Gebrauchsanleitung für Deutschland – Strategien nationaler Selbstdarstellung
G. M. Knig
Social Geography Discussions , 2007,
My essay analyzes the "Manual for Germany" (2003, 2005) as an exemplary case of national self-representation. On the basis of this text, I inquire how cultural themes are appropriated, transformed, and visualized in the machination of a German national imaginary. My aim, however, is not to investigate the current diffusion of a popular media-culture that offers up national identity in consumable parts. The focus is rather on the official portrayal of Germany in the context of (im)migration. Through a synchronic analysis of image and text, I interrogate the relation between discursive and visual information in the manual (by the "Delegate of the Federal Republic for Migration, Refugees, and Integration") and subsequently explicate the subtle strategies of German self-promotion. I show that despite the manual's dual ethnographic perspective, the underlying text and image strategies do not optimally support the manual's goal of exhibiting Germany's regional diversity, historicity, and plurality. The reliance on popular knowledge repertoires and the prominent acclamations of tradition result in interculturally problematic gestures of familiarity with a homogenized culture.

A. Knig
