Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2012005000015
Abstract: background: there is increasing evidence suggesting that chagas disease involves oxidative damage and contributes to heart disease progression. objective: to evaluate the effect of carvedilol on oxidative stress markers in chronic chagas disease. methods: the study population included 42 patients with chagas cardiomyopathy and oxidative stress biomarkers were measured before and after a period of six months of treatment with carvedilol (37.5 mg/day). patients were considered according to the los andes classification and the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, s-transferase and reductase, myeloperoxidase and adenosine deaminase; levels of reduced glutathione, thiobarbituric acid reactive species, carbonyl protein, vitamin e and nitric oxide were measured in blood. results: after treatment with carvedilol, all groups showed significant reductions in levels of carbonyl protein and reduced glutathione, whereas the levels of nitric oxide and adenosine activity increased significantly only in group ia. moreover, most of the antioxidant enzymes showed decrease in activity in groups ia and ib. conclusion: the data suggest that treatment with carvedilol was effective in attenuating oxidative damage, an effect that may be particularly important in patients with chronic chagas' disease cardiomyopathy.
Identidade e subjetividade numa era de incerteza
Ewald, Ariane Patrícia;Soares, Jorge Coelho;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2007000100003
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to pursue the path of construction of what we know as the notion of person, which we relate to the existence of concepts such as subjectivity and identity. this path entails a trail of transdisciplinary reflection, in which the authors seek to break traditional barriers in several areas of knowledge, try to deal with men and their modern conundrums in the historic context of the late modernity, here treated as hypermodernity. in this society which is seen, built and introduced as globalized, the authors put the focus on the means of the construction of new identities in multicultural contexts, in which new possibilities of being in the world coexist with new forms of social tension and resistance.
Osteopatologias e altera??es dentárias em Otaria byronia (Pinnipedia, Otariidae) da costa do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil
Braunn, Patrícia Rodrigues;Ferigolo, Jorge;
Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212004000200001
Abstract: bone diseases and tooth alterations in 47 specimens of otaria byronia (blainville, 1820), from southern brazilian coast, were analized. tooth wear and the associated bone pathologies were determined, as well as their percentuals. the main infection was osteomyelitis associated with tooth alterations, such as fractures and attrition, both of them exposing the pulp chamber. tooth attrition increases with age, favoring fractures and their complications, including osteomyelitis, causing a high frequency of them in specimens presenting more pronounced tooth wear. in one specimen tuberculosis was found in the maxilla, perhaps primarily pulmonary. the high frequency of enamel hypoplasia might reflect cyclic food deficit. infections and tooth fractures might be related to behaviour, such as fishermen interaction, territorial fighting, and accidents during food capture.
Comportamento dos óleos de girassol, soja e milho em frituras de produto cárneo empanado pré-frito congelado
Del Ré, Patrícia Vieira;Jorge, Neuza;
Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542007000600026
Abstract: the ever growing utilization of fast food determined the expansion of an industry of pre-fried and fried products. the understanding of the changes that the oil undergoes during the frying processes is outstanding because it may lead to the optimization of such processes as well as to improvements on the quality of both frying oil and the finished product. the purpose of the present study was to determine the alteration levels of different vegetable oils, sunflower, soybean and corn, in the frying process of snacks frozen pre-fried meat coated product. the frying sessions were carried out at 180oc temperature, 0.3 cm-1surface/volume ratio and 12 hours overall heating time. as for the snacks, the moisture rate and lipids analyses were performed; for the oils, total polar compounds, free fatty acids and peroxide indices were determined. no analysis presented any alteration above the limits recommended by some countries. therefore, it was concluded that the conditions established in the frying process are safe, suggesting that all of the oils were fit for the frying, being the corn oil the one of the highest oxidative stability.
Comportamento de óleos vegetais em frituras descontínuas de produtos pré-fritos congelados
Del Ré, Patrícia Vieira;Jorge, Neuza;
Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-20612006000100010
Abstract: this study was aimed at knowing about the vegetal oils behavior (sunflower, soybean and corn), using consecutive frying of frozen pre-fried products (chip potato and coated meat product - "snacks"). the frying of the products were carried out in a household frying pan under the following controlled conditions: temperature at around 180°c, 0.3 cm-1 surface/volume ratio and 12 h total heating time. the oil samples were submitted to the analytical determinations: total polar compounds, conjugated dienes, tba index and oxidative stability. the results obtained from the analytical determinations, in duplicate, were submitted to variance analysis using a factorial scheme on the randomized blocks design, enabling to determine the factors (products, oils and frying time) influence on the oil alteration. the vegetal oils showed lower alteration on the snacks fryings than on the potatoes. the results made evident that the oils studied, despite the difference in the fatty acids composition, did not present at any of the analyses, values over the recommended limits by some countries for oil discard, independently of the fried product type and heating time.
Antioxidant potential of oregano (Oreganum vulgare L.), basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.): application of oleoresins in vegetable oil
Del Ré, Patrícia Vieira;Jorge, Neuza;
Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-20612011000400021
Abstract: studies have been carried out in order to increase the stability of vegetable oils due to economic and health protection reasons. there is a growing interest in the addition of natural antioxidants; especially herbs and spices. for this reason, this study aimed at evaluating the antioxidant potential of the oleoresins of oregano, basil, and thyme, as well as their behavior when applied to soybean oil under various concentrations. firstly, the antioxidant activity was determined by the β-carotene/linoleic acid system and by the quantification of total phenolic compounds. next, different concentrations of oleoresins (500 to 3000 mg.kg-1) were added to the soybean oil, and its antioxidant potential was analyzed using the oxidative stability through a rancimat equipment. the value of 3000 mg.kg-1 of thyme and oregano oleoresins was the concentration that presented the greatest oxidative stability to soybean oil making them a natural alternative to vegetable oil conservation.

Revista Comunica??o Midiática , 2011,
Abstract: Portugal has followed, since 1880, the international trend towards the foundation of representative organizations of journalists, documenting the growing sense of class among those who did of the editorial office of a newspaper an occupation, an activity or even a profession. The goal of this paper is to know the journalists' associations that existed in Portugal, from the very beginning until 1974, and in particular those which published some kind of bulletin or magazine, as well as presenting, in summary form, the respective publications. To that end, we have used bibliographic research about the journalistic associations and, especially, a documentary analysis of such publications.
