Abstract: Currently, millions of tons of steel are produced worldwide. This has become a serious economic and environmental challenge because the ores used for steel production are nonrenewable resources and the production generates huge amount of waste. In this study, we identified and investigated the ability of bacteria from steelmaking waste with low and high zinc concentration to promote leaching of zinc, when enriched by acidic (pH 2) culture conditions. The bioleaching assays indicated removal of Zn, as in chemical leaching. Bacterial communities from crude and enrichment culture wastes were characterized by the 16S rRNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis of the generated clone libraries revealed predominance of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. The Actino- bacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Deinococcus-Thermus phyla were also encountered. The clones were most closely related to cultivable heterotrophic bacteria. Different genera were identified including iron redox cycling and leaching bacteria such as Chromobacterium, Aeromonas, Escherichia, Bacillus, and Ochrobactrum. These data add significant new information on bacteria which survive in extremely acidic conditions. They are distantly related to typical acidophiles responsible for the leaching process, which makes them good candidates for future studies on metal bioleaching.

Revista Virtual de Química , 2012,
Abstract: Benthos are organisms, animals or plants, that live in direct relationship with the bottom. Benthic organisms have great ecological and economic importance. Several marine and coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs, salt marshes and estuaries have an important benthic component, supporting a great biological diversity and providing a lot of services (e.g. refuge, spawning sites, feeding sites, breeding sites and coastline protection). Chemical and physical variables can strongly influence benthic organisms because it controls a great part of the environmental conditions in which a species can live. Furthermore, changes in the composition and or on the abundance of benthic species may indicate human impacts. Here we present the main characteristics of important benthic habitats of the Todos os Santos Bay (TSB), contextualizes some results of the TSB Project and discuss impacts on mangroves and coral reefs on different spatial scales. Despite the impacts, many of the benthic habitats in the TSB are still in a good conservation status and fully developing important ecological, economic and social functions. It is strongly suggested that a precise survey to map all benthic habitats in the TSB must be done and also the maintenance and creation of long term ecological monitoring programs.
Apresentar o Brasil aos brasileiros, aproximar os brasileiros de sua pátria: a materialidade na geografia escolar de Delgado de Carvalho
Costa, Patrícia Coelho;
Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-21862011000200002
Abstract: this article examines the use of space and school objects for the teaching of geography, based on carlos delgado de carvalho's perspective. according to this lecturer, who had a french academic background and followed the theories developed by ratzel, it was a civic mission to present brazil through geography. with this purpose in mind, he projected chambers where scientific resources were used to promote a rupture with teaching methods adopted by his contemporaries, which were grounded on verbalism. the study of this architecture and its objects, when carried out from an ethnographic perspective, discloses characteristics of the material culture adopted by schools in the 1930's.

Revista da Faculdade de Letras : Historia , 2011,
Abstract: This study aims to present the empirical basis that supported our Master thesis. Thought the main purpose of that work was to understand the local expenses system of Porto in the second half of the seventeen century, it was crucial to analyze the behavior as well as the mechanisms of the municipal financial management: the way the book-keeping was done, who was locally responsible for it and who regulated it in behalf of the central power. Therefore, the exam of the production information mechanisms (local sources) and their control could be the keys to understand the relationships between local and central power.

Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the dialogue between the Crown and the local authority of Porto regarding fiscal administration, after the War of Restoration. In 1672, the Crown requests funding from Porto’s Sobejos das Sisas in order to build a fleet in the shipyard of Ribeira do Ouro, which can assist the India campaign. In this work, the behavior and the municipal reactions, as well as the Crown’s justifications regarding the request of this extraordinary expense are evaluated in a microperspective way, based on the correspondence exchange between the Crown and the municipality of Porto.

Abstract: objectives: to study the smoking habits of 6th year portuguese medical students and assess their knowledge and acceptance of anti-smoking measures and how they felt these would impact on public health. material and methods: we conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study, in which a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire was made available online to the target population (6th year portuguese medical students). the relationships between some of the variables were analysed using contingency tables and the ÷2 test, with p<0.05 taken as statistically significant. results: we obtained 255 answers to our questionnaire. we found an 18.04% prevalence of smokers. the majority of smokers smoked 1 - 10 cigarettes per day, with men smoking more, and most of them had begun their habit between 13 and 18 years of age, with women beginning later. 36.96% of smokers had already made an attempt to quit smoking. the great majority of the respondents agreed with the anti-smoking measures listed in the questionnaire. furthermore, they expected these measures to have a positive impact on smoking and on smoking-related morbidity and mortality. only 34.90% of the students judged smoking cessation to be sufficiently taught in their curricula. conclusions: the results are in accordance with the population in general in terms of the prevalence of smokers, the age of beginning smoking and a high prevalence of women smokers. there appears to be across-the-board agreement with anti-smoking measures, along with hope for a reduced general and individual consumption and morbi-mortality.
