Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2001,
Abstract: One hundred and thirty cases of diarrhea and 43 age-matched controls, 0 to 5 years old, were studied in a pediatric outpatient unit from a poor peri urban area of Porto Velho, Rond nia. Eighty percent of diarrheal cases were observed in the groups under 2 years of age. Rotavirus (19.2%) was the most frequent enteropathogen associated with diarrhea, followed by Shigella flexneri (6.15%) and S. sonnei (1.5%) and Salmonella sp. (6.9%). Four cases of E. coli enterotoxigenic infections (3.1%), E. coli enteropathogenic (EPEC)(2.3%) one case of E. coli enteroinvasive infection (0.8%) and one case of Yersinia enterocolitica (0.8%) were also identified. Mixed infections were frequent, associating rotavirus, EPEC and Salmonella sp. with Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762008000700017
Abstract: the incidence of shigella spp. was assessed in 877 infants from the public hospital in rond?nia (western amazon region, brazil) where shigella represents the fourth cause of diarrhea. twenty-five isolates were identified: 18 were shigella flexneri, three shigella sonnei, three shigella boydii and one shigella dysenteriae. with the exception of s. dysenteriae, all shigella spp. isolated from children with diarrhea acquired multiple antibiotic resistances. pcr detection of ipa virulence genes and invasion assays of bloody diarrhea and fever (colitis) were compared among 25 patients testing positive for shigella. the ipah and ipabcd genes were detected in almost all isolates and, unsurprisingly, all shigella isolates associated with colitis were able to invade hela cells. this work alerts for multiple antibiotic resistant shigella in the region and characterizes presence of ipa virulence genes and invasion phenotypesin dysenteric shigellosis.

Journal of Transportation Technologies (JTTs) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jtts.2012.21008
Abstract: This paper presents a study undertaken to understand the plug-in vehicle acceptance and probable utilization behaviour in terms of charging habits and utility factor (probability of driving in electrical mode). A survey was designed to be answered via World Wide Web, throughout 3 months and only accessible to Portuguese inhabitants. The survey was composed by biographical and car ownership info, mobility patterns, awareness toward plug-in vehicle technologies, price premium and, finally, potential buyer’s attitudes regarding charging vehicles with electricity from the grid. An explanation of how each vehicle technology works in the case of a regular hybrid (HEV), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and a pure electric vehicle (EV) was provided. A total sample of 809 volunteers answered the survey, aged above 18 years old, 50% male and 50% female. The results allowed the estimation of the typical daily driving distance, the Utility Factor curve for plug-in hybrid future users, the charging preferences for future users of pure electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles and the necessary feebates to promote the market penetration of such technologies. Other correlations were also analyzed between driving patterns, type of owned car, price premium and the willingness to buy pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The main policy implications are that an increase of awareness campaigns is necessary if the government intends to support the plug-in electric vehicle technology widespread and a minimum of 5000 € investment per ton of avoided CO2 will be necessary in a year.
Synthesis and Characterization of a New Cellulose Acetate-Propionate Gel: Crosslinking Density Determination  [PDF]
Patrícia Allue Dantas, Vagner Roberto Botaro
Open Journal of Polymer Chemistry (OJPChem) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojpchem.2012.24019
Abstract: Crosslinking is one of the most commonly reactions used to improve the physical properties of cellulose derivatives. Cellulose Acetate Propionate (CAP) is a commercial ester obtained as a cellulose derivative and it can be used as basis for the synthesis of crosslinked chains as described in this work. Typical used crosslinkers are di-functional compounds, such as dianhydrides or diisocyanate. The formation of polymeric 3D structures as described in this work occurs typically by the reaction of the linear chains bearing free OH groups with crosslinking agents such as dianhydrides. These reactions are used to make a very absorbent material, typically a gel. The syntheses were performed in homogeneous medium with acetate propionate in a very dry atmosphere by employing PMDA (Pyromellitic Dianhydride) and BTDA (3,3’, 4,4’ Benzophenone Tetracarboxylated Dianhydride) as crosslinking agents in a reflux system. TGA analysis has shown the different thermal stability of the gels when compared with CAP. Typical TGA curves have demonstrated the lower stability of the crosslinked chains when compared to CAP as consequence of esther linkages formed in the gels structures. The Mc, which is the value for the molar mass between crosslinkings points in 3D structure, was determined according to Flory-Rehner theory. This important parameter has demonstrated greater reactivity of PMDA in comparison with the BTDA in the reactions conditions’ employed in this work.

Advances in Physical Education (APE) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ape.2015.51001
Abstract: The present study aims to discuss the application of educational resource “Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder: at Home, at School and in the Community” (Missiuna, Rivard, & Pollock, 2011) for parents of seven-year-old children of a public school in a Brazilian city. The booklet aims to help parents and teachers identify and manage school-aged children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Methods: The contents of the booklet were used in a group of four parents of children previously identified with DCD in the school environment using a workshop. Results: The meetings of the parents were oriented to the characterization of the disorder. The activities helped parents understand the difficulties of their children. Conclusion: In this study it was found that the use of the educational resources together with games proved to be an important approach to working with parents of children with DCD. However, it is important to expand the number of participants in future studies.
A successful clinical case of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis: surgical management using enterolysis
Neto,Patrícia; ,;
Nefrología (Madrid) , 2012, DOI: 10.3265/Nefrologia.pre2012.Jul.11532
Abstract: the encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis is a rare but serious complication of peritoneal dialysis. the incident rate varies between 0.5 to 4.4%. this entity is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. the diagnosis requires the presence of clinical features of intestinal obstruction or disturbed gastrointestinal function with pathological and radiological evidence of bowel encapsulation. the exact pathogenic mechanism of eps remains unknown, although it's strongest associated with duration of peritoneal dialysis. we present a clinical case of eps and discuss the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention.
Autores, editores, leitores: O que os livros cívicos para crian?as da Primeira República dizem sobre eles?
Hansen, Patrícia Santos;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742011000200004
Abstract: books for children with civic content is a strong feature in the set of the first books designed to attract the young brazilian readers, published since the end of the nineteenth century. in fact, these books represents the major fictional production originally written for that audience. thereby, this paper aims to investigate the content and discursive strategies, as well as graphics and editorial aspects, which a potentially growing market should comply with. throughout the analysis, we will also attempt to underline the specificity and dynamics of relationships between some of the key individuals involved in the production, circulation and reception of children's books of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century: authors, editors and readers.

Abstract: this article presents the process of adaptation of the questionnaire on means of work - qmow in brazil. this instrument is integrated by two inventories and four scales about significance, perceptions, assignments, values and attitudes concerning the act of working. the methodological procedure to validated the instrument is constituted by following stages: systematization of theoretical and empirical basis on which is built the qmow original version, the pilot instrument administration and the pre-test by the adapted version, including 680 people, with predominantly young adults, of the masculine and feminine sexes, from different work backgrounds and different degrees of schooling and income levels. the psychometrics data obtained from the instrument has shown a high internal consistency to the total of items of the inventories and scales and it has evidenced that qmow portuguese version is appropriate for administration in a brazilian context.
Habitar um corpo sexualizado: Identidades de género construídas numa modernidade ambígua
Ex aequo , 2010,
Abstract: this paper is based in the results of a research about the social construction of gender identigties in children. in the context of reflexive modernity characterized by individualization and the possibility of an identity project of self, we could see little space for gender ?performativity? and individuals living ambiguities and tensions in inhabiting their sexualized bodies, inhabited by a naturalized sex. nevertheless, it was possible to see some gender transversality, pointing to the importance of reflecting on the deconstruction of the normalized gender binary.
