Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2001000900003
Abstract: objective: to study the arrangement of the myocardial fiber bundles at the pulmonary venous left atrial junction in patients with pulmonary hypertension, and to discuss the pathophysiological importance of this element in the etiology of acute pulmonary edema. methods: we obtained 12 hearts and their pulmonary vein extremities from postmortem examinations of patients with the anatomicopathological diagnosis of acute pulmonary edema. the specimens, which had no grossly visible morphological cardiac alterations, were fixed in 10% formalin, and the muscular arrangement of the pulmonary venous left atrial junctions was analyzed. this material was then isolated, embedded in paraffin, underwent serial cutting (50 μm of thickness), and was stained with azam's trichrome. results: we observed in our specimens that: a) the myocardial fiber bundles that originate in the atrial wall and involve the openings of the pulmonary veins were fewer than those observed in healthy material; b) the myocardial fiber bundles that extend into the pulmonary veins were shorter than those found in material originating from individuals with no pulmonary hypertension. conclusion: anatomical changes that result in a reduction in the amount of myocardial fiber bundles in the pulmonary venous left atrial junction, isolated or associated with other factors, may be the cause of disorders in pulmonary circulation, leading to an increase in pulmonary venous pressure, and, consequently, to acute pulmonary edema.

Abstract: background: in-hospital physical therapists work on the effects of hypoactivity or inactivity of bedridden patients. in daily practice, contraction of the calf muscle is commonly performed by health professionals in hospitals, especially in pre- and post-operative periods as a form of reducing venous stasis and risk of deep venous thrombosis in the lower limbs. objective: to assess venous flow volume at the calf muscle pump using color doppler ultrasound during active and passive kinesiotherapy (ankle plantar flexion). methods: the sample consisted of 30 individuals randomly selected and submitted to color doppler ultrasound of the right popliteal vein, aiming to measure blood flow volume in four periods: rest, manual calf compression, active and passive ankle movement in plantar flexion. the t test was used for statistical analysis, and p < 0.05 was used as an index of statistical significance. results: the sample consisted of 16 females and 14 males. means were as follows: age (31.57 years), height (1.68 m), weight (68.25 kg), and body mass index (24.16). statistical analysis showed that passive ankle plantar flexion was significant when compared to baseline (p < 0.000056) as to calf pump muscle activation, although not as much as active exercise (p < 0.0000016). manual compression of the triceps surae muscle in relation to passive exercise was also significant (p < 0.000000081). conclusion: in this study, active ankle plantar flexion proved statistically more effective than passive exercise in calf muscle pump activation, increasing blood flow volume in the popliteal vein and minimizing venous stasis in the lower limbs.

Acta Scientiarum : Technology , 2010,
The different types of waste produced by man in several areas represent a serious environmental problem when incorrectly discharged. This work carried out degradation experiments of dye wastegenerated at the laboratory of microbiology of the Federal University of Technology – Paraná State, Campus Curitiba. Assays were performed through liquid culture implemented with Pleurotus sajor-caju and advanced oxidative process (AOP - System UV/H2O2). Efficiency verification of these processes was carried out through monitoringcolor removal and aromatic compounds by spectrophotometric analysis (UV-vis), and also by controlling the reduction of organic matter (Chemical Oxigen Demand analysis), as well as by performing toxicity bioassays with Escherichia coli and seeds of Lactuca sativa. Resultsindicated that the combined process – liquid culture followed by peroxidation with ultraviolet radiation, proved to be the most effective treatment for color removal (90-95%) and degradation of aromatic compounds (16-20%). Bioassays showed that the raw dye wastesamples did not inhibit E. coli growth, but showed potential toxicity to the species of L. sativa, inhibiting seeds germination by 30 to 57%.
