Abstract: The effect of an educational intervention by attendance and at distance on the knowledge of nurses about pressure ulcer (PU) was verified. An experimental research with a post-test control group was undertaken. A randomized sample of 43 nurses in a Control Group (CG) (N = 20) was submitted to an educational intervention by attendance and an Experimental Group (EG) (N = 23) was submitted to an intervention at distance. Data were collected between January and April 2012 in three phases, which were: location, invitation, registration and adaptation of the nurses to Moodle, educative intervention and post-test. The mean number of correct answers on the posttest among the nurses who participated in the intervention by attendance was 34.0 (sd = 3.3), against 36.2 (sd = 2.7) for the nurses in the distance education intervention. This difference in means was statistically significant (p = 0.019). The research evidenced that continuing education in nursing through distance education (DE) can be effective due to its practicality and interactivity and because it allows nurses in clinical practice to decide on the best time and place to access the content and improve their knowledge about PU.

Liana R. Netto, Patrícia Cavalcanti-Ribeiro, Juliana L. Pereira, José F. Nogueira, Lene L. Santos, Sidnei B. Lira, Gisela M. Guedes, Carlos A. Teles, The Trauma, Anxiety Disorders Study Group (TADSG) -. UFBA, Karestan C. Koenen, Lucas C. Quarantini
PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0078677
Abstract: Background Epidemiological studies show that most of the adult population will be exposed to at least one potentially traumatic event in the course of his/her life; adolescence and early adulthood are the most vulnerable periods of life for exposure to traumatic experiences (70% of their deaths are due to external causes). Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is characterized by the development of dysfunctional symptoms that cause distress or social, academic, or occupational impairment, as result of exposure to a traumatic event. The aim of this multicentric study is to establish the proportion of college students, within seven institutions in Northeastern Brazil, who were exposed to traumatic experience and met PTSD criteria. Methods/Design A one-phase census protocol of seven college institutions in three metropolitan regions in Northeastern Brazil was performed (April to July 2011). All students aged 18 years or older, matriculated and attending their first or final semester were eligible. The self-applied protocol consisted of a socio-demographic questionnaire and the following scales adjusted to Brazilian Portuguese standards Trauma History Questionnaire (THQ), PTSD Checklist-Civilian (PCL-C), Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11). Data were entered into SPSS 17.0. Results 2213 (85.5%) students consented to participate, and completely filled in the protocols. Of these, 66.1% were woman, mean age 23.9 (SD 6.3), 82.7% were single, and 57.3% attended university outside their native cities. The total PTSD prevalence was 14%, and the median for frequency of trauma exposure was 5 events. Conclusion A high frequency of exposure to violence, as well as a high rate of PTSD, suicide attempts, and high-risk sexual behavior was found in Brazilian college students. This highlights the importance of effective public health actions in relation to the prevention and treatment of PTSD and other dysfunctional behaviors resulting from traumatic exposure in young individuals, usually an at risk population for violence and traumatic situations.

Abstract: dolabelladienotriol is a product extracted from the brown marine alga dictyota pfaffii from brazil that has been shown to have antiviral activity and low cytotoxicity. our studies have evaluated the acute toxicity of dolabelladienotriol in balb/c mice for ten days after administration of a single dose. among the parameters considered were behavior, weight, biochemical and histological analyses of blood samples taken at three different times (bs.0, bs.1 and bs.2) and optical microscopic examination of organs like liver, kidney, stomach and small intestine. mice deaths were not observed at any dose during the ten day period. there were some changes in the biochemical analysis results for urea nitrogen (bun) and alanine aminotransferase (alt), but the changes were not significantly different from the reference levels of the animals before administration of the substance. histological analyses of tissues were very similar for all animals. the alterations in liver and kidney tissues did not affect the animals′ behavior at any concentration, not even at 50 mg/kg, where the most significant changes in tissues were seen. this study indicates that dolabelladienotriol has low toxicity in administered dose range.

Oliveira, Patrícia L.;Figueiredo, Bernardino R.;Cardoso, Arnaldo A.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532012001200015
Abstract: the purpose of this study was to assess the composition of the rainwater in araraquara city, brazil, a region strongly influenced by pre-harvest burning of sugar cane crops. chemical and mineralogical variables were measured in rainwater collected during the harvest, dry period of 2009 and the non-harvest, wet period of 2010. ca2+ and nh4+ were responsible for 55% of cations and no3- for 45% of anions in rainwater. al and fe along with k were the most abundant among trace elements in both soluble and insoluble fractions. high volume weighted mean concentration (vwm) for most of the analyzed species were observed in the harvest, dry period, mainly due to agricultural activities and meteorological conditions. the chemistry of the araraquara rainwater and principal component analysis (pca) quantification clearly indicate the concurrence of a diversity of sources from natural to anthropogenic especially related to agricultural activities.
Poliniza??o e dispers?o de sementes em Myrtaceae do Brasil
Gressler, Eliana;Pizo, Marco A.;Morellato, L. Patrícia C.;
Brazilian Journal of Botany , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-84042006000400002
Abstract: myrtaceae is one of the most important plant families in brazilian vegetation, especially forests. its white, hermaphrodite flowers, with numerous stamens, and the fleshy fruits are exploited by a variety of animal species. this revision aimed to summarize the knowledge of the reproductive ecology of brazilian myrtaceae, bringing together information about the pollinators and seed dispersers of a great number of species. data were compiled from the literature, complemented with unpublished information from the authors and other researchers. the majority of the pollination studies were carried out in cerrado vegetation, whereas seed dispersal studies were conducted mainly on atlantic forest. pollen is the major resource offered by myrtaceae flowers. the flowers are visited mainly by bees, the pollinators of almost all species studied until now. the greatest number of visits to flowers is from meliponinae and bombinae bees (apidae). other insects such as flies and wasps also visit myrtaceous flowers, occasionally acting as pollinators. bird pollination was reported for acca sellowiana (o. berg) burret and myrrhinium atropurpureum schott, in which the main floral resource are the fleshy and sweet petals. birds and monkeys are the main seed dispersers of brazilian myrtaceae, although other mammals, reptiles, fish and ants may interact and casually disperse seeds. information on the pollination and seed dispersal agents of myrtaceae in brazil are still scarce, and its knowledge is essential to species preservation and the conservation of the brazilian forests.
