Natural Resources (NR) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/nr.2013.41A016
Abstract:

Organic photovoltaic cells using polymer belonging to the aniline-heteroaryl family as electron donor have been achieved by thermal evaporation. We show that the properties of the polymer film, morphology, molecule order and conductivity depend strongly on the bottom anode buffer layer. While cells without anode buffer layer or with MoO3 or CuI anode buffer layer have been probed, we show that CuI allows improving strongly the cells efficiency through an improvement of the morphology and conductivity of the polymer film. This shows that although it is necessary a good band matching at the interface, this is not sufficient, because the templating effect of CuI on the polymer film is primordial for photovoltaic cells improvement.

Screening method for rapid determination of polychlorinated biphenyls in transformer oil by liquid-liquid extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry
Toledo, Carla;Valle, Luis;Narváez, Jessica;Richter, Pablo;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532007000500010
Abstract: a rapid and simple method was developed for screening polychlorinated biphenyls in transformer oil. the method is based on liquid-liquid extraction in methanol and subsequent direct gas chromatography-mass spectrometric determination. the extent of methanol polarity allows to extract the pcbs, co-extracting a minimum amount of the apolar oil components, thus avoiding the time-consuming steps involving in sample preparation. since the regulation established internationally for wastes containing pcbs is 50 mg kg-1, the method rapidly determines whether the transformer oil is pcbs-contaminated or not. in order to reach the best conditions for extraction a multivariate optimization was carried out considering two significant variables: volume of methanol and extraction time. under optimum conditions, recoveries of aroclor 1256 and aroclor 1260 were between 80 and 100%, and precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, was from 2 to 4%. the method was applied to real samples polluted with pcbs.

Revista Brasileira de Entomologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0085-56262012005000017
Abstract: the importance of age and feeding on the performance of cephalonomia stephanoderis (hymenoptera, bethylidae), a parasitoid of the coffee berry borer, hypothenemus hampei (coleoptera, curculionidae) was investigated in the laboratory. groups of female parasitoids were subject to the following treatments: a group fed during one, five and ten days after emergence of adults with coffee borer larvae; another group fed only with honey solution during five days after emergence; and as a control, a third group was kept without food for five days. at the end of each treatment, survivorship, parasitoid activity (walking and flying capacity in an arena), search capacity for finding coffee borer-infested berries, host feeding and oviposition (on immature hosts), were assessed. unfed females showed a significant decrease in survivorship compared to individuals that were fed. the type of meal (insects or honey) did not significantly influence parasitoid activity, search and oviposition capacities. females fed with honey solution significantly consumed less immature coffee borers. younger females (one day old) walked and flew out of the arena significantly faster than older ones (5 and 10 days old). implications of these results are discussed on the performance of c. stephanoderis as a biological control agent of the coffee berry borer.
VALIDITY OF THE MODIFIED CONCONI TEST FOR DETERMINING VENTILATORY THRESHOLD DURING ON-WATER ROWING
Jorge Villamil Cabo,Pablo Martinez-Camblor,Miguel del Valle
Journal of Sports Science and Medicine , 2011,
Abstract: The objectives of this study were to design a field test based on the Conconi protocol to determine the ventilatory threshold of rowers and to test its reliability and validity. A group of sixteen oarsmen completed a modified Conconi test for on-water rowing. The reliability of the detection of the heart rate threshold was evaluated using heart rate breaking point in the Conconi test and retest. Heart rate threshold was detected in 88.8% of cases in the test-retest. The validity of the modified Conconi test was evaluated by comparing the heart rate threshold data acquired with that obtained in a ventilatory threshold test (VT2). No significant differences were found for the values of different intensity parameters i.e. heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2), stroke rate (SR) and speed (S) between the heart rate threshold and the ventilatory threshold, (170.9 ± 6.8 vs. 169.3 ± 6.4 beats·min-1; 42.0 ± 8.6 vs. 43.5 ± 8.3 ml·kg-1·min-1; 25.8 ± 3.3 vs. 27.0 ± 3.2 strokes·min-1 and 14.4 ± 0.8 vs. 14.6 ± 0.8 km·h-1). The differences in averages obtained in the Conconi test-retest were small with a low standard error of the mean. The reliability data between the Conconi test-retest showed low coefficients of variations (CV) and high intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). The total errors for the Conconi test-retest are low for the measured variables (1.31 HR, 0.87 VO2, 0.65 SR, and 0.1 S). The Bland- Altman's method for analysis validity showed a strong concordance according to the analyzed variables. We conclude that the modified Conconi test for on-water rowing is a valid and reliable method for the determination of the second ventilatory threshold (VT2).

Introduction: the Pudendal Nerve Entrapment Syndrome was described for the first time by Gérard Amarenco in 1987. It is caused by several etiologies and is characterized by neuritic pain located in the genital, perineal, and anal areas. Sexual, urinary and fecal dysfunctions could accompany the pain. It is often misdiagnosed in the clinical setting. Objective: to sensitize the health care provider on the diagnosis and treatment of the Pudendal Nerve Entrapment Syndrome and its impact on sexual health. Methods: the clinical method was applied by performing a detailed history and a thorough physical examination, with emphasis on the pelvic floor, in addition to further examination. A specialized literature review was conducted. Results: the history and physical examination entailed the presumptive diagnosis of pudendal nerve injury. This study revealed the presence of bilateral pudendal nerve injury by electrophysiological studies. Conclusiones: this case shows bilateral pudendal nerve injury, after performing a hysterectomy. The development of neuropathic pain generating an apparent increase in sexual des

We assessed the damage on the habitat after Hurricane Dean and its influence on the abundance of wildlife. We used 20 sampling sites along an area of high to low impact. At each site, vegetation sampling was conducted to determine the characteristics of habitat and the impact of hurricane Dean. For fauna, each site was sampled to obtain indices of relative tracks abundance (tracks/km). Interviews were conducted with key informants to determine which tree species were consumed by the local fauna. Damage gradually declined to less than 4% at a distance of 120 km perpendicular to the hurricane. The habitat was relatively homogeneous and no differences were found between the parameters and attributes measured in the vegetation, the only variable that differed was the percentage of trees damage. Of tree species, 65% were reported as food for frugivorous, herbivorous and omnivorous species. At high-impact sites the abundance of herbivores was lower while abundance of omnivores was higher. Damage to trees species was the only variable that negatively correlated with the abundance of herbivorous species, which was not evident with omnivorous species.
Accurate Human Tissue Characterization for Energy-Efficient Wireless On-Body Communications
Mónica Vallejo,Joaquín Recas,Pablo García del Valle,José L. Ayala
Sensors , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/s130607546
Abstract: The demand for Wireless Body Sensor Networks (WBSNs) is rapidly increasing due to the revolution in wearable systems demonstrated by the penetration of on-the-body sensors in hospitals, sports medicine and general health-care practices. In WBSN, the body acts as a communication channel for the propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves, where losses are mainly due to absorption of power in the tissue. This paper shows the effects of the dielectric properties of biological tissues in the signal strength and, for the first time, relates these effects with the human body composition. After a careful analysis of results, this work proposes a reactive algorithm for power transmission to alleviate the effect of body movement and body type. This policy achieves up to 40.8% energy savings in a realistic scenario with no performance overhead.
