Revista Brasileira de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-72032012000600005
Abstract: purpose: to evaluate the correlation between maternal waist circumference measured before the 12th week of gestation and serum leptin levels during pregnancy, as well as to compare the leptin levels of women with and without abdominal obesity diagnosed in early pregnancy. methods: prospective study including 40 pregnant women receiving low-risk prenatal care, older than 20 years, nonsmokers, with singleton pregnancies and without chronic disease. waist circumference was measured before the 12th week and serum leptin levels were measured between the 9th and 12th, 25th and 28th and 34th and 37th weeks of gestation. according to waist circumference measurement, the cohort was divided into two groups: with and without abdominal obesity. the mann-whitney and χ2 tests were used to assess the differences between groups. the pearson correlation coeffient was used to assess the association between waist circumference and serum leptin levels during pregnancy. the level of significance was set at p<0.05. results: the mean weight and body mass index of patients with abdominal obesity (74.4±11.0 kg/28.9±4.1) was higher than that of patients without abdominal obesity (55.6±5.9 kg/21.1±2.4) (p=0.001). the mean leptin levels in pregnant patients with abdominal obesity (41.9±3.5 ng/ml) was higher than in patients without abdominal obesity (23.6±2.7 ng/ml) (p<0.0002). a positive correlation was obtained between the waist circumference measured during the same period and the mean serum leptin levels (r=0.7; p<0.0001). conclusions: waist circumference measured before the 12th week of pregnancy is a valid and simple method to predict the serum leptin levels throughout pregnancy. pregnant women with abdominal obesity diagnosed before 12th week have higher mean serum leptin levels during pregnancy than those without abdominal obesity.

Open Journal of Ecology (OJE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/oje.2014.415078
Abstract: Edge effects and linear canopy openings may change ecological patterns and processes on forests. Here we investigate if these openings in a lowland Brazilian Atlantic forest cause edge effects on seedlings. We sampled seedling communities at forest edges near to two linear canopy openings (gas pipeline and power line) and in interiors far from edges. Comparisons between the seedling communities were performed to access edge effects. Density and basal area patterns were compared using, hierarchical two-way ANOVAs and the number of newly germinated seedlings, mortality and resprouts were compared by one-way ANOVAs. The results showed that edge effects of linear canopy openings affect seedling communities leading to low densities on edges that showed less favorable conditions for arrival, establishment and initial survival. The basal area patterns were not affected by edge effects apparently by the resistance of the seedlings that have more than 4 mm diameter. Therefore, linear canopy openings caused edge effects, which determine low seedling densities on edges. However this pattern is not due to increase mortality on these edges, but probably caused by the reduction on germination and establishment.

Abstract: Large amounts of the macrolide tylosin have been used for pig production in Denmark for growth promotion and therapy [1]. In 1996 68,350 kg of tylosin was used for growth promotion and 1,350 kg for therapy. No macrolides have been used for growth promotion for cattle but spiramycin and tylosin have been used therapeutically for treatment of mastitis [3]. A total of 644 kg macrolides, primarily tylosin, was used for cattle in 1996 in Denmark. Local variations in treatment strategies exist depending on the choice of the veterinarian but due to the used strain collection this effect will be minimal. At the same time 5,934 kg of penicillin was used (Erik Jacobsen, personal communication). The usage of macrolides for treatment of infections in human in general practice constitutes approximately 20–25 percent of the total usage of antibiotics in humans. However, in human medicine 16-membered macrolides are not used. The macrolides used in human medicine in Denmark are primarily erythromycin (14-membered) and azithromycin [2].A total of 185 macrolide resistant staphylococci were tested, twenty-nine staphylococci from cattle (8 Staphylococcus aureus and 21 coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS)), 111 Staphylococcus hyicus isolates of porcine origin and 45 S. aureus from non-hospitalized humans [4]. All animal isolates were obtained from the DANMAP surveillance program with one isolate per herd hereby representing a broad spectrum of farms in Denmark. Human isolates were obtained from individuals of both sex and from different age groups. All human, bovine and 96 porcine isolates were collected from 1995 to 1998. The remaining 15 porcine isolates were collected in 2001, two years after the discontinued usage of growth promoters in Denmark. The presence of erm(C) was confirmed using previous described primers [4]. Among the animal isolates from 1995–98, all except one porcine isolate contained the erm(C) gene (Table 1). erm(C) was found in 23 (69%) of the human isolates and 7

Abstract: consider the most important nutrient in the increment of grain gield and also the proteic level, nitrogen (n), in addition of this fact, this nutrient is the component that most increases the production cost of maize crop. this study aimed to verify whether the application of leaf nitrogen influences the accumulation of proteins and parameters of growth of young plants of maize compared to the application of urea via soil. for both, young plants of the hybrid maize br 206 received applications of urea as a source of n via leaf and soil at concentrations of zero, 0.5% and 1.0%. the plants were grown in a greenhouse being held three applications of n, the first for six days after the emergency (dae) in a volume of 10 ml per plant and the following two to 10 and 14 dae with 20 ml each. at 18 dae the plants were collected and analyses proceeded. for plant height, root volum, leaf area, dry weigth of leaf area and root, one verified a higher efficiency of leaf fertilization, mainly at 0,5% level of urea. the application of urea 1,0% via soil caused a significative increase in leaf protein levels. these results suggest that leaf fertilization may be an efficient mode to complement what is uptaken by the roots, although it should not be used as a unique source of inorganic n to the plants.

Abstract: Although the majority of bacteria are innocuous or even beneficial for their host, others are highly infectious pathogens that can cause widespread and deadly diseases. When investigating the relationships between bacteria and other living organisms, it is therefore essential to be able to separate pathogenic organisms from non-pathogenic ones. Using traditional experimental methods for this purpose can be very costly and time-consuming, and also uncertain since animal models are not always good predictors for pathogenicity in humans. Bioinformatics-based methods are therefore strongly needed to mine the fast growing number of genome sequences and assess in a rapid and reliable way the pathogenicity of novel bacteria.

Abstract: In this study, we created an experimental model for assessing the therapeutic effect of roxithromycin in GO and the expression of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta2) through immunohistochemistry. We used four groups of rats totaling 32 individuals. GO was induced during five weeks and drug treatment was given on the 6th week as follows: group 1 received saline; group 2 received CsA and was treated with saline on the 6th week; group 3 received CsA and, on the 6th week, ampicilin; and group 4 received CsA during 5 weeks and, on the 6th week, was treated with roxithromycin. The results demonstrated that roxithromycin treatment was effective in reducing cyclosporine-induced GO in rats. Both epithelial and connective tissue showed a decrease in thickness and a significant reduction in TGF-beta2 expression, with a lower number of fibroblasts, reduction in fibrotic areas and decrease in inflammatory infiltrate. The present data suggest that the down-regulation of TGF-beta2 expression may be an important mechanism of action by which roxithromycin inhibits GO.Gingival overgrowth (GO) is a common side effect of certain drugs, such as phenytoin, calcium channel blockers and cyclosporin [1,2].Cyclosporine (CsA) has been widely used to prevent organ transplant rejection and to treat various immunodiseases [2]. It selectively suppresses helper T-cell function and modulates the network of inflammatory cytokines. However, CsA is associated with several adverse effects, such as nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, hirsutism and gingival overgrowth (GO) [1,3,4]. The average prevalence of dentate transplant patients who develop cyclosporine induced GO is around 30%, with variation between 10 and 85% [5-9]. When associated with other medication, such as calcium channel blocker antihypertensives, this prevalence increases, as does the gravity of the complication, and, consequently, the risk [10-13].Fibrosis, one of the most important finding in GO, is the result of a variety of biochem

Abstract: the purpose of this paper is to test the brazilian capital market's efficiency in face of monetary policy. in the period between the asian crisis and the exchange flexibilization, the agents made a correct use of the available information and formed expectations about the policymaker's behavior, even in the moments of crisis, in order to maintain the political rules adopted previously. the study's approach was based on the discussion about rational expectations and their relationship with efficient markets. the bolsa de valores de s?o paulo index (ibovespa) was chosen as a proxy to brazilian capital market's behavior, because the index variation can be understood as the rate of return in that market. to evaluate the return's behavior, the wilcoxon ranks test was employed. from this statistical test's results, it was possible to infer that the brazilian market was efficient in face of the behavior of economic policy by rules.
