Statistical voxel-wise analysis of ictal SPECT reveals pattern of abnormal perfusion in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy

Abstract: objective: to investigate the pattern of perfusion abnormalities in ictal and interictal brain perfusion spect images (bsi) from patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (tle). method: it was acquired interictal and ictal bsi from 24 patients with refractory tle. bsis were analyzed by visual inspection and statistical parametric mapping (spm2). statistical analysis compared the patients group to a control group of 50 volunteers. the images from patients with left-tle were left-right flipped. results: it was not observed significant perfusional differences in interictal scans with spm. ictal bsi in spm analysis revealed hyperperfusion within ipsilateral temporal lobe (epileptogenic focus) and also contralateral parieto-occipital region, ipsilateral posterior cingulate gyrus, occipital lobes and ipsilateral basal ganglia. ictal bsi also showed areas of hypoperfusion. conclusion: in a group analysis of ictal bsi of patients with tle, voxel-wise analysis detects a network of distant regions of perfusional alteration which may play active role in seizure genesis and propagation.

Abstract: Not available El objetivo que perseguimos al escribir este artículo, es demostrar cómo desde el cristianism.0 hubo siempre intentos por construir experiencias concretas de carácter comunitario, y cómo estas tuvieron como proyecto realizable y posible, o sea como utopía, las formas de vida de las primeras comunidades cristianas que describen los Hechos de los Apóstoles. Es especialmente interesante en ese sentido, analizar la raíz profundamente crítica a lo culturalmente predominante por parte de las diferentes experiencias comunitarias. Nuestra lectura será entonces desde las ciencias sociales, y más concretamente de lo que hemos definido en otra oportunidad como una visión socioeconómica-solidaria.

Abstract: A programmable gate array is a circuit whose action is controlled by input data. In this letter we describe a special--purpose quantum circuit that can be programmed to evaluate the expectation value of any operator $O$ acting on a space of states of $N$ dimensions. The circuit has a program register whose state $|\Psi(O)>_P$ encodes the operator $O$ whose expectation value is to be evaluated. The method requires knowledge of the expansion of $O$ in a basis of the space of operators. We discuss some applications of this circuit and its relation to known instances of quantum state tomography.

Abstract: introduction. the aim of the study was to evaluate the success rate of transpyloric tube (tpt) placement using air gastric insufflation technique in patients hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit. population, materials and methods. the data were collected retrospectively from a prospective filled database. tpt positioning was defined as successful by evaluation of its distal end in the abdominal x-ray. demographic information, success rate, duration of the procedure were registered. descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. results. there were 37 procedures in 33 patients and 84% of them were on mechanical ventilation. the percentage of success in tpt placement was 89% (33/37) and the mean duration of the procedure was 12.8 min ± 5.3. no complications were registered. conclusion. tpt placement through the insufflation of air in the stomach is a short, simple, effective, and well tolerated procedure that can be done at bedside.
Imitation System for Humanoid Robotics Heads

Abstract: This paper presents a new system for recognition and imitating of a set of facial expressions using the visual information acquired by the robot. Besides, the proposed system detects and imitates the interlocutor head’s pose and motion. The approach described in this paper is used for human-robot interaction (HRI), and it consists of two consecutive stages: i) a visual analysis of the human facial expression in order to estimate the interlocutor’s emotional state (i.e., happiness, sadness, anger, fear, neutral) using a Bayesian approach, which is achieved in real time; and ii) an estimate of the user’s head pose and motion. This information updates the knowledge of the robot about the people in its field of view, and thus, allows the robot to use it for future actions and interactions. In this paper, both, human facial expression and head motion, are imitated by Muecas, a 12 degree of freedom (DOF) robotics Head. This paper also introduces the concept of the human and robot facial expression models, which are included inside of a new cognitive module that builds and updates selective representations of the robot and the agents in its environment for enhancing future HRI. Experimental results demonstrate the quality of the detection and imitation using different scenarios with Muecas.

Abstract: this article is a critical analysis from bamboozled film, launched in 2000 by spike lee. in his work, particularly in this film, there are conceptual influences from two of the most important authors: bertold brecht and his alienation effect or "v-effekt" (from the german verfremdungseffekt ), and henri bergson with his conception of laughter and its specific function and social meaning. the spike lee's work, opened in the modernist sense, brings a didactic-pedagogic intention about the using and the deconstruction of eurocentric image - which has not been sufficiently examined and understood by the criticism yet.

Abstract: This paper presents the development of a computer game that allows interaction between two users, one of them visually impaired, to be guided by sound alerts. According to the IBGE census of 2000, about 10% of the population has complete or partial visual impairment. There are not many tools available that allow such interaction. To develop this game we have used free tools like Audacity and Blender3D. The result of the work was very satisfactory and highlights the interest and need for entertainment programs that allow interaction between people with distinct limitations. It is noteworthy that one of the greatest challenges in implementation stems from the fact that programmers do not have auditory sensitivity, such as blind people have, making it relevant to their participation throughout the process.
Dynamical phases for the evolution of the entanglement between two oscillators coupled to the same environment

Abstract: We study the dynamics of the entanglement between two oscillators that are initially prepared in a general two-mode Gaussian state and evolve while coupled to the same environment. In a previous paper we showed that there are three qualitatively different dynamical phases for the entanglement in the long time limit: sudden death, sudden death and revival and no-sudden death [Paz & Roncaglia, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 220401 (2008)]. Here we generalize and extend those results along several directions: We analyze the fate of entanglement for an environment with a general spectral density providing a complete characterization of the corresponding phase diagrams for ohmic and sub--ohmic environments (we also analyze the super-ohmic case showing that for such environment the expected behavior is rather different). We also generalize previous studies by considering two different models for the interaction between the system and the environment (first we analyze the case when the coupling is through position and then we examine the case where the coupling is symmetric in position and momentum). Finally, we analyze (both numerically and analytically) the case of non-resonant oscillators. In that case we show that the final entanglement is independent of the initial state and may be non-zero at very low temperatures. We provide a natural interpretation of our results in terms of a simple quantum optics model.
Dynamics of the entanglement between two oscillators in the same environment

Abstract: We provide a complete characterization of the evolution of entanglement between two oscillators coupled to a common environment. For initial Gaussian states we identify three phases with different qualitative long time behavior: There is a phase where entanglement undergoes a sudden death (SD). Another phase (SDR) is characterized by an infinite sequence of events of sudden death and revival of entanglement. In the third phase (NSD) there is no sudden death of entanglement, which persist for long time. The phase diagram is described and analytic expressions for the boundary between phases are obtained. Numerical simulations show the accuracy of the analytic expressions. These results are applicable to a large variety of non--Markovian environments. The case of non--resonant oscillators is also numerically investigated.
