Abstract: we have tested the hypothesis that restless leg syndrome (rls) is related to quality of sleep, fatigue and clinical disability in multiple sclerosis (ms). the diagnosis of rls used the four minimum criteria defined by the international restless legs syndrome study group. fatigue was assessed by the fatigue severity scale (fss >27), quality of sleep by the pittsburgh sleep quality index (psqi >6), excessive daytime sleepiness by the epworth sleepiness scale (ess >10) and clinical disability by the expanded disability status scale (edss). forty-four patients (32 women) aged 14 to 64 years (43 ± 14) with disease from 0.4 to 23 years (6.7 ± 5.9) were evaluated. thirty-five were classified as relapsing-remitting, 5 as primary progressive and 4 as secondary progressive. edss varied from 0 to 8.0 (3.6 ± 2.0). rls was detected in 12 cases (27%). patients with rls presented greater disability (p = 0.01), poorer sleep (p = 0.02) and greater levels of fatigue (p = 0.03). impaired sleep was present in 23 (52%) and excessive daytime sleepiness in 3 cases (6.8%). fatigue was present in 32 subjects (73%) and was associated with clinical disability (p = 0.000) and sleep quality (p = 0.002). age, gender, disease duration, ms pattern, excessive daytime sleepiness and the presence of upper motor neuron signs were not associated with the presence of rls. fatigue was best explained by clinical disability and poor sleep quality. awareness of rls among health care professionals may contribute to improvement in ms management.

Abstract: epidemiological investigations suggest that t102c polymorphism of gene 5-ht2a may be associated with mean life span because diseases and behaviors related to this polymorphism, such as schizophrenia, suicide, aggression, and addiction, may potentially shorten mean life span. a sample of 687 individuals without previous neuropsychiatric disease was genotyped and separated into 3 groups according to their gender and age: 14-45 years old, 46-64 years old and 65-100 years old. molecular genotyping was performed using the technique of polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism using hpaii restriction enzyme. 5-ht2a genotype frequencies were: tt = 21.5% (148), cc = 16.6% (114) and tc = 61.9% (425) and allele frequencies were t = 52.5% and c = 46.5%. significant differences were found between mean age of the tt genotype carriers (60.27 ± 12.60 years) and tc genotype carriers (56.80 ± 13.18 years) of t102c polymorphism of gene 5-ht2a (p = 0.026) as well as the age groups (p = 0.012). carriers of genotype tt were older than the other two genotypes, whereas carriers of genotype cc had an intermediate age compared with tt and cc subjects. the present results demonstrate an association between t102c polymorphism of gene 5-ht2a and age. our results suggest that t102c polymorphism of gene 5-ht2a is associated with mean life span, and thus this gene becomes a possible candidate for the group of adaptive genes to meat consumption proposed in the literature. further studies should be conducted in order to elucidate this association.

Abstract: disturbed sleep is common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd). conventional hypnotics worsen nocturnal hypoxemia and, in severe cases, can lead to respiratory failure. exogenous melatonin has somnogenic properties in normal subjects and can improve sleep in several clinical conditions. this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was carried out to determine the effects of melatonin on sleep in copd. thirty consecutive patients with moderate to very severe copd were initially recruited for the study. none of the participants had a history of disease exacerbation 4 weeks prior to the study, obstructive sleep apnea, mental disorders, current use of oral steroids, methylxanthines or hypnotic-sedative medication, nocturnal oxygen therapy, and shift work. patients received 3 mg melatonin (n = 12) or placebo (n = 13), orally in a single dose, 1 h before bedtime for 21 consecutive days. sleep quality was assessed by the pittsburgh sleep quality index (psqi) and daytime sleepiness was measured by the epworth sleepiness scale. pulmonary function and functional exercise level were assessed by spirometry and the 6-min walk test, respectively. twenty-five patients completed the study protocol and were included in the final analysis. melatonin treatment significantly improved global psqi scores (p = 0.012), particularly sleep latency (p = 0.008) and sleep duration (p = 0.046). no differences in daytime sleepiness, lung function and functional exercise level were observed. we conclude that melatonin can improve sleep in copd. further long-term studies involving larger number of patients are needed before melatonin can be safely recommended for the management of sleep disturbances in these patients.

Abstract: a study to characterize the epidemiological status of brucellosis was carried out in the federal district of brazil. a total of 2,019 serum samples from 278 herds were collected. in each herd, it was applied an epidemiological questionnaire focused on herd traits as well as husbandry and sanitary practices that could be associated with the risk of infection. the serum samples were screened for antibodies against brucella spp. by the rose-bengal test (rbt), and all positive sera were re-tested by the 2-mercaptoethanol test (2-me). the herd was considered positive if at least one animal was positive on both rbt and 2-me tests. herd prevalence was estimated as 2.5% [1.0-5.1%] whereas animal prevalence was 0.16% [0.04-0.28%]. given these results, that may warrant the implementation of eradication strategies, there is a case for intensifying the serological testing in the federal district, coupled with the introduction of rapid detection methods by the dairy industries, with a view to increasing the number of accredited free herds and improving the sensitivity of the surveillance system..

Abstract: To evaluate the precision of the DNA tests using the non-automatized technique for individual identification and parentage tests, 105 Rottweiler dogs were studied using the primer CMR S. The sample was composed of 39 animals belonging to 11 complete families and their progenies, and 66 non related individuals until the second generation, derived from kennels located in the states of Minas Gerais and S o Paulo. The CMR S primer was used for the Polimerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The results showed the inefficiency of the technique, even when analyzed through the automated gel analysis system. Also showed the impossibility of its commercial use due to the fact of does not permit the storage of data for subsequent use.

Abstract: The use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) for real-time data collecting during ecological aerial surveys (EAS) in the Kruger National Park (KNP) was investigated as an alternative to post-survey manual data capture. Results obtained during an aerial census of large herbivores and surface water distribution in the northern part of the KNP using an onboard GPS connected to a palmtop computer are discussed. This relatively inexpensive system proved to be highly efficient for real-time data capture while additional information such as ground velocity and time can be recorded for every data point. Measures of distances between a ground marker and fix points measured during a flight (x = 60.0 m) are considered to be well within the requirements of the EAS.
