História (S?o Paulo) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742010000100007
Abstract: this article aims to analyze the social distinctions incorporated in the catholicism in the province of sergipe del rey during the nineteenth century. the analysis will be centered in the criteria of admission of two active religious brotherhoods in the city of estancia in sergipe, brazil. the research shows that there was a population divided between the brotherhoods of the blessed sacrament and our lady of the rosary, reflections of a more diversified social hierarchy about the criteria of race, wealth and social prestige. the space presented meanings in so far as the city reproduced, symbolically, the society and its organization in social strata. in other words, we notice that the catholic religious field in the population of estancia followed the mechanisms of expression of the segregation and presented itself as representative of the oppositions between the social groups, which were characterized by associations which defined the social position and the tastes of their members.

Abstract: a new technique for relay based closed loop transfer function estimation is presented. given a closed loop system and a user selected transfer function, then a relay experiment is used to obtain the frequency corresponding to a selected transfer function magnitude. in this paper the sensitivity function is considered. this information can be used to evaluate closed loop properties and/or to redesign the controller.

Abstract: this paper aims to present the essential basis for an effective higher education reform. the strategies chosen by the authors to develop and to construct their proposals are based on studies of evolution and special features of the brazilian higher education system. by analyzing this special and highly complex system the authors could conclude that in order to fit the challenges which emerge from the knowledge society the higher education system reform adjusted to a country like brazil has to be reorganized in order to present solutions to three main questions: the system modernization, the improvement of the quality of the whole brazilian education system and the promotion of social inclusion through the access democratization.

Abstract: basil (ocimum basilicum l.) genotypes present different contents, yields and chemical constituents in its essential oils. factors influence the essential oil production of basil, such as cultivar and cultivation method. the study of genetic parameters is a useful tool to identify superior genotypes. in this work we estimated some genetic parameters associated to the production behavior of six basil populations cultivated in 2004/05 and 2005/06. the variables dry weight of leaves + inflorescences and essential oil yield presented high variability because of strong influence of the studied years. linalool content presented constant values during the two years. essential oil content and yield and linalool content in the essential oil presented high herdability in the combined analyses, indicating genetic control and great possibilities to transmit them to the following generations. the combined analyses showed highest essential oil content and yield for the populations pi 197442-s3-bulk 3, pi 197442-s3-bulk 5 and pi 197442-s3-bulk 8. for the major chemical constituent of the essential oil, linalool, all the populations presented similar content. only the minor chemical constituents were different.

Abstract: purpose: to determine the frequency of hydatiform mole in tissues obtained by curettage. methods: a cross-sectional, prospective and descriptive conducted on patients who underwent curretage due to a diagnosis of abortion or hydatiform mole whose material was sent for pathological examination. we excluded women who did not accept to participate and refused to sign the free informed consent form. we studied the following variables: pathological findings, age, race, number of pregnancies and previous abortions, gestational age at diagnosis, quantitative serum beta fraction of human chorionic gonadotropin and ultrasound findings. the data were compared to the to histological diagnosis, considered to be the gold standard. data were stored and analyzed in microsoft excel? software and the epi-info program, version 6.0 (statcalc) and the results are presented as frequency (percentage) or mean±standard deviation. the χ2 test was used to determine the association between qualitative variables and the level of significance was set at p<0.005. results: a total of 515 curettage procedures were performed, 446 of which comprised the sample. the frequency of hydatiform mole was 2.2% (ten cases). the mean age of the patients with a mole was 31±10 years, most patients were white and multiparous and had no history of previous abortions, but there was no significant association between these variables. the pregnancy loss occurred early in patients with and without a mole and the most common complaints in both groups were vaginal bleeding and cramps in the lower abdomen. quantitative determination of human chorionic gonadotropin was performed in 422 cases (413 with and 9 without a hydatiform mole). the levels of the hormone were higher than 100,000 miu/ml in 1.9% of the patients without a hydatiform mole and in 44.45% of the patients with the disease (p=0.00004). all patients with this hormonal level had an ultrasound suspicion of hydatiform mole and one of them also had a clinical su
Modeling, simulation and identification for control of tandem cold metal rolling

Materials Research , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-14392012005000137
Abstract: this paper describes a modeling procedure for tandem cold metal rolling, including the linearization step and system identification for control. the tandem cold rolling process is described by a mathematical model based on algebraic equations developed for control purposes and empirical relations. a state-space model is derived and detailed analyses in open loop are presented, concerning the sensitivity with regard to the variations in process parameters and results for the application of a new subspace identification method are compared with classical methodologies. therefore, this work intents to be a contribution for developments in new control strategies for tandem cold rolling process that offer the potential to reduce the design efforts, the commissioning time and maintenance in rolling mills. the preliminary results obtained with this model have shown reasonable agreement with operational data presented at literature for industrial cold rolling process.

Abstract: one hundred and one capsicum genotypes of hot and sweet peppers belonging to four different species were appraised as for their reaction to the attack of phytophagous mites. evaluations consisted of the examination of genotypes for the presence of established colonies of mites, under natural infestation in greenhouse conditions. leaves were observed at stereoscopic microscope to detection of colonies and glass slides were prepared with specimens aiming observation at compound microscope. colonies of two species were identified, polyphagotarsonemus latus and tetranychus urticae. of all of the genotypes tested, 7.5% of the genotypes of capsicum annuum, 50% of c. frutescens, 57% of c. baccatum and 100% of c. chinensis, did not have colonies of neither of the mites species.

Abstract: by correlation and path-coefficient analysis, the most relevant traits for selection for peanut pod yield were identified among the following: total number of pegs (tnp), number of pegs in the lower third of the plant (nplth), number of mature pods (nmp), main stem height (msh), and reproductive efficiency (ef1 and ef2). the trial consisted of 15 f2:3 progenies derived from a cross of variety br 1 and the advanced line cnpa 280 am, evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications. the lines with best reproductive efficiency were l.8 and l.11. path analysis detected a strong direct effect of the number of pegs in the lower plant third on the number of mature pods. this finding justifies the use of the number of pegs in the lower plant third in selection of peanut populations for number of mature pods.

Abstract: decomposition of carbon tetrachloride in a dc thermal plasma reactor was investigated in argon atmosphere. the operational parameters such as plasma torch power and argon flow rate versus ccl4 conversion were examined. the ccl4 net degradation was determined by gc-fid, the chlorine produced was quantified by iodometric titration, the solid carbon was characterised by raman spectroscopy and by bet analysis. the solid carbon collected inside de plasma reactor was submitted to solid/liquid extraction and the desorbed species were identified by gc-ms.
